Unfortunately Gitane is no longer open we were there closing night.
The restaurant is nestled away in an alleyway near union square and has the coolest ambiance. The bonbons are delicious!!! Dates with goat cheese wrapped in bacon. Amazing.
We’ll miss Gitane but will hang tight to all those fabulous memories.
Sorry to lose this special, romantic place.
Booked this for a Valentines dinner. Showed up a few minutes early for our reservation and we had seats at the bar. The hostess gave us two seats less than a foot away from the hostess/reception desk. The tone was set when the bartender came over as we starting to sit down and said "you can't sit there, it's for reservations only" and when we told her the hostess told us to sit there and we have a reservation she mumbled something and walked away. Seeing that the seating location was quite bad I asked politely if we could have the two empty seats at the other end of the bar and was given a firm "no". Then the couple in the two seats to our left got up to leave within 5 mins of us sitting down so I asked if we could just shift over and the bartender (who was serving both sets of seats) said "no" and the hostess confirmed. Those two seats sat empty the whole time we were there. We got bumped all night by hostess and servers coming to reception and had to listen to them complain about customers. The service was awful. Drinks came slow. There was one half hearted check in on our meal when we were almost finished and the empty plates sat in front of us for twenty minutes. We were never asked if we wanted another drink (empty glasses of wine and cocktail sat in front of us for most of the meal). When asked about dessert she finally gave us a menu and then we watched while she completely ignored us by taking dirty dishes to the kitchen and doing other things. After 15 mins of waiting we asked the hostess a foot to our right if we could get the check and we left. Terrible experience. I had been here once before the previous year and loved the food, service and ambiance, but this time around I'd have to say this is the worst service I've ever experienced in almost 20 years in San Francisco. Will not be going back.
Wonderful evening enjoying delicious food and wine with special friends! We had the special “Valentines” dinner and had the wine pairings also and we were not disappointed. The service was also wonderful. A memorable meal!
We shared a 3-course fixed price meal. The quail appetizer and the dessert were very tasty. However, the lamb shoulder in the main course was a bit tough. Additionally, we shared the mussels entree - great broth and accompanying bread (but not enough bread), gigantic size mussels, but they were a bit squishy.
Service was impeccable, particularly from bar manager Amy.
Sorry to see Gitane is closing (lost their lease), but look forward to their reopening 9 months down the road in the Park Galleria hotel.

My girlfriend and I were celebrating our 14th anniversary that night. The food was delicious, service was on point, and the complimentary vermut & sherry was a nice treat. Can’t wait to return.
Btw, we didn’t tell the staff it was our anniversary. They still made it special :)
We had an early reservation that came with app and apertif courtesy of OpenTable and Gitane, which was a nice treat! I came for my birthday, and the group was fairly large, but the staff was incredibly kind and helpful and the food was EXCELLENT, as usual. (I've been here 4+ times!) I love this place. Would recommend for dates, birthday dinners and their drinks!
Small portions even for tapas, mostly potatoes not much protein
Three of us ordered the special fixed price menu for Restaurant Week, with a main entree of pork belly. It was a rolled, roasted slice of meat with lots and lots of fat. None of us was thrilled with our entree.
I wasn't overly impressed with Gitane. It's a pretty space and it's cool that it's in an alley, but I thought the food was just OK for the price. The octopus we ordered was a bit undercooked. Mussels were pretty good, meaty in a red sauce. There are plenty of good restaurants in SF so I won't be back.

Great service! We had several people waiting on us and they were all very attentive. The food was fantastic. It was a good value.
Gitane is a once "hot" restaurant that now draws a steady stream of regulars who enjoy its tasty blend of French-Spanish-North African tapas. The food is an nice mix of creative dishes and some standards. The ambiance is warm and a bit exotic. An nice wine and cocktail list complete the experience.

Marko our waiter was very good, informative, friendly. Our friend allergic with milk,dairy, got all his food cook without milk/ dairy. We were happy. Definitely will be back.
the location of the restaurant is a bit odd but once you get there it's worth it, it could also just be my poor navigational skills. The service was friendly and the food was yummy, they had just ran out of the meatballs but other than that the overall experience was great

Great atmosphere. Romantic though noisy if full. Chicken and mussels were superb..Brussels sprouts tasty but very small helping. Cocktails lovely.
This restaurant is visually stunning and the food was incredible! We had a wonderful experience celebrating a special occasion and can’t wait to come back again.
This place is absolutely magical! And Open Table got us a couple nice drinks and an appetizer.

Was catching up with friends from out of town who I'd not seen in 2 years. The manager asked us to leave our table so she could seat another party after we'd spent $200 on our evening. She gave us some prosecco as a thank you - it was mediocre at best! More appropriate would have been to comp our last round of drinks
It’s a great place, great ambience and service. The food didnt delight me, specilly based on pricing. Maybe my expectations were higher on the food. It was my birthday and they mentioned they will bring a candle and a dessert but it was not complementary. In general it was Ok, but definetly not outsatnding.
Terrible service. We waited over half an hour for our first drink. They ended up comping our drink but then the service continued to be bad by a delay in our food. We then said we’d like to see the dessert menu and they never brought it to us. All around awful service.

Seated upstairs next to an extremely loud group of people. The food was mediocre at best, over salted and overpriced for the quantity and quality . Tried the octopus with fingerling potatoes . Needed a magnifying glass to spot the octopus . Had the seafood paella .. rice was undercooked but the scallops were tasty.
Would not return.
I really wanted to love this place, but alas, there were too many issues to overlook.
The biggest problem was sadly beyond the restaurant's control: there was a drunk table of exuberant women hooting and hollering for our entire stay. Our waiter appeared equally troubled by them, and when I mentioned them to him he looked he said they were indeed "beyond obnoxious". Again, I realize patrons like these put the restaurant in a bind, but their constant outbursts ruined both the mood and the night for us (and I'm sure we weren't alone).
Obnoxious patrons aside, I was disappointed by the glacial kitchen times (our waiter said the "kitchen was slammed", but several of the tables had yet to have anyone seated at them, much less orders placed), and the absence of anything else to snack on (no amuse bouche, or even a few slices of bread) made the initial delay all the more evident. Given this, it was dismaying that when our charcuterie plate finally arrived, apparently the rest of our order still hadn't been given to the kitchen, and it wasn't until we were finishing up with the charcuterie plate (itself delayed by waiting on a tectonic refill of bread) that our waiter informed us he'd placed the rest of our order. Geez, thanks -- more time to enjoy the whooping from the drunks!
Additionally, our waiter forgot one of the items from our order (bacon/date bonbons -- which frankly were overcooked and flavorless -- we would've been better without them), and didn't know which one of us was having a birthday, despite this being in both the OpenTable comments and communicated in a phone call the night before. Nor did the restaurant take any initiative to commemorate the birthday (e.g., not even a candle in the dessert would've been welcome or a "happy birthday" on the receipt) -- a bit surprising for the "most romantic" spot.
Needless to say, with so many other amazing restaurants in the area, we won't be returning.
Small, intimate. Tables ate a little too close for my liking, but the food and service were very good. It did get busy enough where service did slow down towards the end of dinner where we changed our mind about getting dessert. I like to linger and talk with my friends, but over dessert would have been a nicer way to end the evening. Trust me, I wasn't upset, I'm just relaying mt experience.
Food - really terrific. We opted for tapas style. 3 of us each ordered 2 tapas and it was perfect. Unique and lovely presentation. We got the bonbons, quesos (cheese platter), lamb meatballs, avocado, salmon tartare, chicken (I forget the name) and one I am forgetting right now. I would recommend them all.
Oh yeah, and making a reservation through OpenTable I got us 2 appetizers and two cocktails, their choice... one wss a vermouth which was a surprisingly delicious vermouth and the other was a sherry that none of us liked.
I'll go back, no question. It's right near my office, which makes it even better.
Gitane lived up to it’s reputation. Food was fantastic. Service was excellent including recommendations on food and wine. If we visit San Francisco again we would come again!
Everything we had was delicious! Most of the tapas came out in sets of 3. This is a great tapas restaurant that does not scimp on portions and does everything very well. Chocolate cake is to die for but the dulce de leche flan was lacking. Overall highly recommend!
We had a double date! My brother was in town with his girlfriend and I brought a gal I’ve been seeing. Great time. Excellent service. Will definitely be back.
