Affectionately known as one of San Francisco's hidden gems, Gitane is eclectic, sexy and sophisticated. Combining the sultry playfulness of a 1930s cabaret with the audacious spirit of the 1970s, Gitane's interior features rich fabrics, bold patterns and romantic chandeliers, while the heated patio is tucked away on Claude Lane. Inspired by the travels of a gypsy, the menu is rooted in Northern Spain, but crosses borders to incorporate the flavors of Southern France and the adjacent regions of Italy.
The dramatic bar features food friendly craft cocktails that change with the seasons, as well as an expansive selection of sherry and wine from small producers.

Whether you're looking for a place to hold a blowout bash, or a smaller dinner celebration, Gitane has glamorous spaces that make any event into a special occasion. Groups of up to 28 can enjoy dinner on our heated patio, while larger groups can buy out our upstairs dining room for dinner. For cocktail parties, reserve half of the bar for 15-20, take over the entire bar for up to 40, or take over the restaurant for groups of over 100.

It’s a great place, great ambience and service. The food didnt delight me, specilly based on pricing. Maybe my expectations were higher on the food. It was my birthday and they mentioned they will bring a candle and a dessert but it was not complementary. In general it was Ok, but definetly not outsatnding.
Terrible service. We waited over half an hour for our first drink. They ended up comping our drink but then the service continued to be bad by a delay in our food. We then said we’d like to see the dessert menu and they never brought it to us. All around awful service.
Came here to celebrate a special occasion.
Seated upstairs next to an extremely loud group of people. The food was mediocre at best, over salted and overpriced for the quantity and quality . Tried the octopus with fingerling potatoes . Needed a magnifying glass to spot the octopus . Had the seafood paella .. rice was undercooked but the scallops were tasty.
Would not return.
I really wanted to love this place, but alas, there were too many issues to overlook.
The biggest problem was sadly beyond the restaurant's control: there was a drunk table of exuberant women hooting and hollering for our entire stay. Our waiter appeared equally troubled by them, and when I mentioned them to him he looked he said they were indeed "beyond obnoxious". Again, I realize patrons like these put the restaurant in a bind, but their constant outbursts ruined both the mood and the night for us (and I'm sure we weren't alone).
Obnoxious patrons aside, I was disappointed by the glacial kitchen times (our waiter said the "kitchen was slammed", but several of the tables had yet to have anyone seated at them, much less orders placed), and the absence of anything else to snack on (no amuse bouche, or even a few slices of bread) made the initial delay all the more evident. Given this, it was dismaying that when our charcuterie plate finally arrived, apparently the rest of our order still hadn't been given to the kitchen, and it wasn't until we were finishing up with the charcuterie plate (itself delayed by waiting on a tectonic refill of bread) that our waiter informed us he'd placed the rest of our order. Geez, thanks -- more time to enjoy the whooping from the drunks!
Additionally, our waiter forgot one of the items from our order (bacon/date bonbons -- which frankly were overcooked and flavorless -- we would've been better without them), and didn't know which one of us was having a birthday, despite this being in both the OpenTable comments and communicated in a phone call the night before. Nor did the restaurant take any initiative to commemorate the birthday (e.g., not even a candle in the dessert would've been welcome or a "happy birthday" on the receipt) -- a bit surprising for the "most romantic" spot.
Needless to say, with so many other amazing restaurants in the area, we won't be returning.
Small, intimate. Tables ate a little too close for my liking, but the food and service were very good. It did get busy enough where service did slow down towards the end of dinner where we changed our mind about getting dessert. I like to linger and talk with my friends, but over dessert would have been a nicer way to end the evening. Trust me, I wasn't upset, I'm just relaying mt experience.
Food - really terrific. We opted for tapas style. 3 of us each ordered 2 tapas and it was perfect. Unique and lovely presentation. We got the bonbons, quesos (cheese platter), lamb meatballs, avocado, salmon tartare, chicken (I forget the name) and one I am forgetting right now. I would recommend them all.
Oh yeah, and making a reservation through OpenTable I got us 2 appetizers and two cocktails, their choice... one wss a vermouth which was a surprisingly delicious vermouth and the other was a sherry that none of us liked.
I'll go back, no question. It's right near my office, which makes it even better.
Everything we had was delicious! Most of the tapas came out in sets of 3. This is a great tapas restaurant that does not scimp on portions and does everything very well. Chocolate cake is to die for but the dulce de leche flan was lacking. Overall highly recommend!
First, we were seated right by the wait station, where the entire staff seemed to traipse by constantly. And then we waited more than half an hour for drinks. Then we had to flag down people who had nothing to do with our table for water. We waited so long after the tapas for the waiter that we decided to pass on dessert. At which point our waiter comped us two glasses of cava (I guess he realized his tip was in danger?) ... and took almost 15 more minutes to bring the check. It's a beautiful space... but why bother? I didn't come to look at the lighting... how could they stick us right by their own station and then forget we were there?
Food was good but environment was unwelcoming. Essentially, if you don't fit their definition of wealthy-looking, don't expect to get the standard of service you're paying for.
I came here for my 22nd birthday because of the good reviews I saw on Opentable about the food. We ordered two glasses of wine and a mocktail for the three of us. Our appetizers came out 20 minutes later and our drinks still had not showed up. It wasn't until I asked them about our drinks that the waiter came over to tell us the manager said we looked young and would have to show our passports to verify our age. I'm not sure who brings their passport around when they go out to dinner a few blocks from their apartment, but being asked for papers while going out for dinner is never the expectation.
It was pretty insulting, and I'm not even sure they looked at the date on my ID to see that it was my 22nd birthday. Worst of all--the waiter kept relaying messages from the manager about how young we look, etc. but the manager NEVER came over to address us or explain the passport policy (??) to diffuse the tension.
She was even servicing the tables next to us, but she was so awkward and standoffish to us. I've worked in the industry before, and when the GM has an issue with the customer, they should not be afraid of taking care of it themselves. The waiter seemed stuck on how to manage it, and even seemed to avoid our table because he must have known how bad it looks to deny someone service because of how they look. Mind you, we had just come back from work and we were dressed in business casual, so it was not about our outfits. They also must not have felt like we deserved the mocktail we ordered for my friend because we had to ask an hour later for that.
Not getting a glass of wine with dinner is one inconvenience, but neglecting our table and making customers feel like delinquents is unprofessional. Not a pleasant environment for a celebration or a relaxing dinner. Too tense.
This was a pleasant surprise. Made reservation for but ran into friends and the were kind enough to let us expand our table. Food was wonderful my wife ask if they could remove the pork from one dish which was not a problem . We started with the olives , bonbons, oysters as appetizers. Everything again was great. Round of drinks which did bust the bank. I had the paellea, and we also ha the mussels. One with an one without pork . Not a problem. Shared two deserts between 4 persons. Cheesecake and gelato again outstanding. We will be back. Very reasonable in price.
My husband and I got stuck in horrendous traffic coming into the city on Tuesday evening. Our resevation for his birthday dinner was at 6:45. It took over two hours to get to the GG Bridge, which necessitated not one but two phone calls to Gitane to change our reservation time. They could not have been nicer! With good humor, sympathy and a true willingness to lessen our stress we were able to push the time to 7:30. When we finally arrived we were greeted warmly and promptly shown our table. That spot was really warm, and I asked to switch to a table near the window, which again, was done with the comment of “ we want you to be comfortable and enjoy your meal with us”. We proceeded to have drinks and then on to a lovely meal. We both had the steak bavette which was finished exactly medium rare as requested. Our water glasses were refilled frequently and even my request for extra ice was brought immediately (which rarely happens!) I got to taste two red wines to select one that was perfect with my meal. Our server Jared, was friendly and efficient, just a nice person to talk to. Thank you also to Allie and Anna (?) our hostesses at the front.
So... what started out as a miserable experience of sitting in stopped traffic for over two hours, ended with two very happy customers. We eat out a lot and often in SF. We have been to Gitane before and have enjoyed it then too, but the staff on Tuesday really went the extra mile and we appreciate it! We will be back! All the best! Nancy and Joe
We had the salad and grilled avocado first courses. They were both delicious and exceeded our expectations. I had the paella-like Arroz Marinero which was expertly prepared with sumptuous ingredients but I thought would have benefited from a bit more seasoning. My dinner partner had the Pan-Seared Salmon which was likewise cooked to perfection and delicious.
The style of food and drink at Gitane is reasonably authentic enough to take friends or out of town guests for something a bit different from Italian, Mexican, Asian or CA cuisine. The small bar area is cozy and the overall decorations and furnishings are very nice. The menu for main dishes is not extensive but is diverse, and the tapas/small plate appys provide the most interesting array of choices. The quality in general is very good with moderate portions depending on your choices, the flat breads are very generous size. The one issue we had on this third visit was a 'scripted server'. Understanding that some are new or are trained by management to 'guide' the customer through the menu, make assertive recommendations, and otherwise over-manage the process. This may be appreciated by tourists or first time customers but for others can provide a somewhat annoying and less than genuine experience. We explained we'd been there before, understood the menu, etc. but still felt 'herded' though the meal. And although I also appreciate the concept of providing palate refreshing 'free' drinks to the table, to supposedly emulate that European style of dining, the choice/quality of what is served is often simply not good and disappointing, such was the case at Gitane.
