“Giovanni’s on the Hill has always been the standard here for service, food and atmosphere,” says Joe Bonwich, restaurant critic for the St. Louis Post Dispatch. “It’s the whole package for high-end Italian dining: table side preparation, waiters in formal attire, a place to go for a memorable occasion. You don’t find those things much anymore.”

Giovanni's On The Hill - Temporarily Closed Ratings and Reviews
This review is based on the many times we have dined at Giovanni's On The Hill. Unfortunately ten days before our reservation the restaurant burned so we had to change our plans.
The ambiance would be described as elegant Italian. The food has always been good, sometimes spectacular. The service has been spotty ranging from annoying to wonderful.
If you want an old school experience this is it. Very traditional food and ambiance. It was good but I do prefer more contemporary fare that is a bit more creative and light. Plan on an early evening as we were kindly asked to leave at 9:45pm as we were the only table remaining to chat after dessert.
Double-date dinner reservations with my husband and friends. We made early dinner reservations as we had plans after. We were greeted upon entering the restaurant and seated immediately. The restaurant was virtually empty when we arrived, but again we made early reservations. Tom was our server for the night and did an excellent job of checking on us and ensuring we had everything we needed throughout the night. The atmosphere was a bit more formal than we expected, but Tom was a good conversationalist and kept the mood light. Food was well-prepared and portions were more than adequate. We were surprised at the end of the night with complimentary shots of limoncello for the table after telling Tom of our travels to Italy in 2013 and how much we enjoyed visiting the island of Capri. Very nice touch! Food is a bit overpriced, in my opinion (I'm a big pasta lover and have been to numerous establishments here and abroad), but overall a good experience.
While in St Louis this is a must for me to visit.
With my schedule only allowing a Monday night visit I was very happy to learn that they were open and that I would be able to dine there.
Went for the lobster ravioli and was not disappointed.
Absolutely love this place and it is in my top 10 for places to dine.
Giovanni's has an extraordinary atmosphere and some of the best service in St. Louis. The food is excellent as well, but the service and ambiance are what truly set it apart. The waiters are very knowledgeable of the menu, sauces are made table side, and anything you need is taken care of. I will definitely return
Picked the place rather randomly on a weekend trip to St. Louis. I'm not one to post many comments about restaurants, but this one is worthy of praise. Honestly one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. From the second we walked through the door it was nothing but nice. The owner greeted us at the door like we were old friends and it just got better. Food was superb with top notch service. Not cheap, but great value for fine Italian dining. Will definitely go there again!
While in St Louis there was no way I would pass up an opportunity to dine on the Hill
The first night I did not choose Giovanni's which I regretted
The second night I did and it was as I remembered it the last time I was there.
Being seated and waited on by the owners made the night even more special.
Had cream of cauliflower soup to start out with, followed by a veal special and the tiaramasu
Service was wonderful and I can not wait until I can visit again
Absolutely fantastic meal! The food was some of the best we've had anywhere. The sauces were worthy of licking the plate! The service was outstanding. Very helpful with selections. The preparation station so we could see the final plating of the food was a treat - it also made us change our minds about what we wanted each time we would see someone else's meal prepared. Its not cheap but its worth every penny - plus our 4 hour drive to get there! (We're not from St. Louis!) Mr. Giovanni was an extremely gracious host. We will be back, we will recommend this to all of our friends, and we highly recommend it to anyone wanting a wonderful Italian meal on the Hill!
Date night with the wife!
What a wonderful evening.
My wife and I forgot how beautiful it is to be pampered and enjoy a dinner in an elegant fashion and we could hear ourselves during dinner.
Food was classic Italian prepared in front of you.
Food and service both five stars.
Louigi our server was excellent.
We felt regal and promised ourselves to spoil each other with real date nights.
Thank you Giovanni a very nice gentleman who made his way over to welcome us.
We have dined at Giovanni's On The Hill several times in the past, both with friends celebrating birthdays and other occasions, or just by ourselves. While the food was outstanding as it always has been in the past, the service this time was poor. Our waiter, Fred, did not pour our wine after he poured for the initial tasting. We poured our own wine. Fred did not offer the specials for the evening until we asked if there were any specials (I also heard guests at another table later ask the same question to Fred), and we felt the support help could have done a better job removing glasses, plates, etc. We got the impression that the area in which we were seated was used for newer or less experienced waiters; it was also the least attractive and had an open dark area across from our table which did not lend to the usual elegant ambiance. We will definitely request and insist to be seated in one of the other rooms in the future, and will suggest to anyone to whom we recommend Giovanni's that they request not to be seated in the "back room" when they call to make a reservation and insist that this special request be honored. Fred did not represent Giovanni's On The Hill very well.
Elegant, first class, warm, great food. Have eaten there a couple of times over the past couple of years. Have always found the servers to be a bit full of themselves. Nevertheless, looking forward to stopping there next summer when we come through St. Louis.
We were in town this weekend while our daughter was pre-registering at WashU. It was our first time getting to know the St. Louis area and Giovanni's came highly recommended and did not disappoint. All the staff were warm and professional without being pretentious. The atmosphere was classy, and pretty formal--crystal chandeliers, white table cloths, gilded framed art on the walls; but patrons were dressed in everything from shorts and Birkenstocks to cocktail attire--all were treated equally well. I say treat yourself and take the rare opportunity to dress up. The wine list was extensive and the food wonderful--from start to finish. We had anti-pasts, caprese salad, linguini with clams, veal piccata--which my husband could not stop raving about. A unique feature of this restaurant: meals are finished and plated in the dining room over open flames. Wow! My husband and I shared a delicious cannoli for dessert, and when I playfully complained that he ate more of it than I, one of the staff brought out a mini-cannoli just for me! Can't say enough about this rare and lovely dining experience. Made these two Texans feel a little better about leaving our only child in St. Louis this fall! We will return to Giovanni's!
While visiting St. Louis for a long weekend -a visit to The Hill is a must and Giovanni's was perfect. Started in 1973 , the restaurant reminded us of a visit to The Hill as young people eating out for the first time. White linen table clothes and fine dining noise level in the dining room. The meatball may have been the best ever tasted. It was huge. We shared one meatball and took half of it home. I am not kidding. We had many items and all were very good. The Chianti was excellent. Authentic evening in Little Italy. Very enjoyable environment and for the Finale - we got to meet Giovanni - the owner. We will go back to Giovanni's our next trip to St. Louis.
We usually love the ambiance, food and service at Giovanni's. This time we were very disappointed. Fred, our waiter, did not pay much attention to us. He did not tell us about the specials, until I asked. He rarely checked on us during the meal. Acted like we didn't exist. We asked him if he could adjust the temperature. He did nothing. We finally asked another waiter to help and he did. To end the night, Fred asked if we wanted dessert or just the check. We paid and promptly left.
It was a surprise since all of out other visits were excellent.
