Giovannis Ratings and Reviews
We had made a reservation that happened to coincide with a snow storm. We were able to go earlier than expected and due to weather conditions, the restaurant was quieter than expected. Tonja was our server and she did a wonderful job of being attentive without being intrusive. She made sure my food allergies were accommodated. Food was fantastic. Ordered more menu items than usual as this was our first time and had heard their menu items were wonderful . We brought leftovers home which were just as delicious as the first time. It was a lovely quiet evening with good food and great conversation with my husband.
Fantastic food and service for New Years Eve. Considering the restaurant was wall-to-wall patrons on a holiday evening, everything went smoothly. Food was outstanding. Service was great! Couldn't ask for more on a holiday. The oysters were fresh, served with two pipettes of mignonette and hot sauce, horseradish snow, fried capers, fresh lemon, and fresh celery - outstanding. For a second course we had a white truffle risotto which was to die for. The risotto was fresh, hot, and perfectly creamy and it was covered with a snow of fresh truffle ground at the table. The third course was a shrimp Genovese with house made gnocchi - with a butter garlic sauce which was light, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. The Shrimp were huge.
We're not dessert eaters per se, but the server brought house made biscotti to accompany our cappuccino and espresso. We topped off the evening with a glass of Fortificato - Italian fortified wine - "port-like" which was smooth and capped a perfect evening for New Years.
We highly recommend Giovanni's for both special occasions and when you want a quiet place for a romantic meal, or want special service for a business lunch or dinner. If they have the ingredients, they'll make it for you. Fantastic!
We were treated very poorly! First, getting a table- after 20 minutes, they attempted to seat us in the bar which was very noisy. Never asked for the bar and didn't accept it! It took another 15 minutes before a table was ready in the dining area. Once we were seated, we were ignored until we asked for help. After the waitperson finally took our drink order and brought the wine (not speedily I might add), no one came to take our food order. We had to ask the maître d'. The dover sole was good - as it always is - but the salad was nothing more than cherry tomatoes swimming in balsamic vinegar and olive oil with a glob of cheese. I have been to Giovanni's a number of times before and never had such a terrible experience. Not a nice way to spend New Year's Eve.
For a $500 meal I expected hot food and to not sit in the bar. Very disappointing. I expected the top food, service and ambiance. I could have been at Longhorn Steakhouse based on where we were sitting. People were literally standing right up against my chair in the bar. I can't afford to go to Giovanni's regularly, I don't make that kind of money. This was supposed to be special and it was far from special.
We dined at Giovanni's for the second time on New Years Eve. Two years ago we had a lovely table and excellent service. This year, despite a very early reservation (5:30) we were squeezed into a tiny table in front of the fireplace. Tables were positioned so close together that we felt like we were dining with strangers. The food was good, but not worth the $125 prix fixe price tag with additional $15 supplements. Service was slow due in part to the obstacle course of tables the waiter had to negotiate to get to us. Giovanni's is still one of the best Cleveland restaurants, just not on New Years Eve.
We were incredibly disappointed. After reading reviews and knowing this is a five star restaurant, we were looking forward to a fabulous dinner. We ordered one of the specials for the night. All of our food was cold - even the coffee. The rolls and breadsticks were ho hum. The restaurant was not busy so there is nothing that would explain the failures. We asked about a sweet shiraz wine but no one was able to help with this or offer a different suggestion available by the glass. Most of the wines are only available by the bottle. Definitely not the experience we had hoped for or expected.
After 17 years in Cleveland, this continues to be one of my favorite spots for a quite dinner or business lunch. My wife and I have also taken friends to "Movie Night." An absolutely great event with a wonderful buffet. Staff has remained consistent and well above par. Food is outstanding. Secretly glad it is hidden in the lower level of an office building so I can usually get a table when I want one.
Giovanni's continues to set the standard for classic fine dining and gracious, attentive service. The food is impeccable and perfectly prepared, the wine list is broad and all-encompassing, and the overall experience is fantastic. When you want to have a special and memorable evening out with "that certain someone" Giovanni's is absolutely THE place to go. We look forward to our next visit.
Very disappointed in what once was a fine dining experience. I literally had to ask 4 times for a black napkin. The service was slow and not the attentiveness that this restaurant once displayed. $28 for a kids pasta and a meatball leaves a
It to be desired.
This is a has been place in my opinion. Many new paces to try and dine. I did not end
Joy that when you send food back not cooked as requested they actually bring the hunk of meat back out for you to hear their opinion. Not acceptable.
Giovanni's has old-school service-- many entrees are prepared tableside--and the room has a collection of Cubist paintings. Going there is an event. We had shrimp Genovese and cannelloni, well presented and with understated flavors. It can afford to be expensive; don't be surprised.
I love the food at Giovannis. It seems to have got busier over the last few years, or maybe it's because there are more tables crammed in, but some of the ambience has been lost. We were in a corner, but were very close to a loud person at the next table and towards the end of the evening, a louder group further away. The service was fine, although not as personable as it used to be.
The Service started off iffy ordering wine from an Ipad? We were sat awhile before we received menus and the server, who never introduced himself asked what we wanted? The appetizer was decent but the entree was much better (halibut). Can't go wrong with the banana foster for dessert. Pricey but it is an upscale place.
