This is my go to Italian place for a special gathering, but not too special,as its reasonably priced. It's a bit noisy due to the configuration, alas, still good. I go for meeting friends at brunch, or a special dinner. Yummy, neighborly, and...well what else do you need?

Just a warning: They refuse to honor OpenTable reservations ... and the hostess is less than friendly about it.

Great neighborhood spot. Come here a few times a month. Love their brunch! The breakfast pizzas are awesome! Thin crust! Can be quite loud inside. The outside searing is great when the weather allows!

We haven't been to Gioia in a couple of years, and I was looking forward to repeating what I remember as my experience. We were disappointed. The pizza was oddly dry, not in an "you're in Italy" kind of way; it was just dry. The salads and pasta were good. I'd stick to those if I go back again.

One of my favorite restaurants. Amazing thin crust pizza and the seasonal menu is always interesting and delicious. Service is always great even when busy.

Gioia Pizzeria is one of my favorite neighborhood gems. My 2 favorite things are the Lambrusco rose and the salsiccia pizza. It's nice to have a casual gourmet restaurant like this in walking distance of my house where we can also walk-in or make a reservation. Delicious!

Staff was very patient even though my group was very late on a Saturday night. Service was brisk and friendly, and food was perfect for a party with two kids--seemed to be young children at every other table. Menu items were accessible/simple but still high quality. Would definitely recommend.

A very energetic place meaning that tables are close together and people are shouting at each other. We came here for lunch and had to wait for at least 20 minutes to get our drinks. The food was good, but I doubt we will return due to excruciating noise and poor service.

Interesting and innovative selection of menu options - something for everyone and often with a twist that makes the dish extra special. Great pies, knowledgeable and friendly service and a very nice wine list.

From start to finish, this was the best food experience I've had in the 4 years I have lived in San Francisco. The staff is incredible (our server Kim was just a delight!), the chefs are beyond talented, and the ambiance of the restaurant itself made me feel so relaxed and welcome. Can't wait to come back!

We grabbed a delicious brunch here with our teenage boys before seeing Hamilton this weekend. The staff was great, and the food was superb. The Milano cocktail was my favorite, and we loved and devoured every dish. Bravo!

The antipasto menu has a nice selection of creative dishes which I have found to be very special and tasty. The pizzas are good, but its the antipasto dishes that keep me coming back. The beer and wine selection is also nice.

While Gioia may be hard to pronounce its not hard to rate this Polk Street restaurant as Outstanding. It is more than a Pizzeria (although their Pizza is excellent.) The menu is varied but straightforward and their mostly Italian wine list is superb. Service is professional and the overall ambience is lively and welcoming. Gioia shows the mark of people who care about good food wine and service. This place could easily become a peer of Frascati and Amerana in the Russian Hill scene and it already is one of the best on Polk Street.

Sunday lunch with 2 young kids- the pizza was phenomenal, salads perfect, hangover bucatini was worth every calorie.
The service was super friendly, just not perfectly attentive, but I'm being very nit picky.
I'd return in a heartbeat.

When my partner and I first looked at this neighborhood, we were recommended to this place "for good, local food." We loved it. Months later, we still think it is the best pizza and wine selection we've had since moving to San Francisco.

The pizza was wonderful, the bucatini was perfection, and desserts and wine are delicious. There is nothing we haven't enjoyed.

During the day, sit by the window. When it's busy, sit at the bar. The service is good, the wait staff really knows their wine, especially Megan, who gave us insights on the wine.

Always recommend.

Made a reservation, but was told we'd have to wait 15-20min because the table was still occupied (isn't that the point of making a reservation at a specified time? Poor planning and timing on their part. And it was at 830, not exactly prime-time). More annoying because I've walked in before with no reservation and 5 open tables, and been told there was no availability because they were being held for later reservations. Also, what kind of "pizza" place doesn't let you add pepperoni...?

Upon arriving at the restaurant on my birthday for dinner, the hostess reacted rudely and aggressively to the change in number for our reservation(friend cancelled late due to illness). "Well, you'll have to eat and drink for them" (in a non-humorous, flat voice). We were sat at a communal table with others, so we clearly didn't cause a major issue with their reservation system. There was no need for the attitude.

Later on, we observed strange behavior from the same hostess when the front doors were left open at length in the middle of winter "Because the kitchen staff is hot, talk to them." Remember to dress warm or plan to wear your jacket while you eat. She then disappeared to smoke outside while a crowd gathered at the door waiting to be sat.

Food was fantastic. We enjoyed the brussel sprouts, meatballs, 2 kinds of pizza and wine. Midway through the meal our friend found a 1/2" chunk of plastic in his pizza. When he mentioned it to the server, who had told us he was new, he reported "Oh, I know what that is. It's from the cheese wrapper." Umm . . . clearly this has been a problem before? Why hasn't it been fixed. No apologies were given.

Sadly, this is the 2nd time I've experienced such horrible service from this restaurant in the past 2 months. Hopefully, the management staff can clean it up since the food is delicious and we love coming to this neighborhood spot.
