Gideon Sweet is a West Loop bar and restaurant by longtime friends Chef Matthias Merges and Chef Graham Elliot.

Gideon Sweet's menu was inspired by our favorite flavors at home and abroad. We wanted to highlight the cuisine and ingredients we love most, that we think you'll enjoy too. For dinner we serve small plates meant for sharing and tasting. Our brunch provides full portions like our Chicken & Waffle Cone and Duck Fat Biscuit.

Our bar program was created by nationally acclaimed bartender Alex Bachman, with a focus on thoughtfully executed, nuanced cocktails. We also serve a "small pour" menu of refined shots, an ideal way to taste more spirits and creative combinations. For the back bar, we partnered with Alex's company, Sole Agent, to offer a highly curated list of rotating rare and vintage spirits.

    We look for new restaurants for date night in the middle of the week, so the fact that there was not a lot of people at the restaurant was not a surprise. The food quality was excellent and the service was also very good. The bar makes an excellent Manhattan!!!!

    We had a reservation on a Friday night and the staff was great about seating us a little early. They answered all our questions about the menu well and were very attentive. My only complaint is that about 15 minutes after we had been seated, the overhead music got really loud and made it hard to have a conversation at the table.

    Great location, really liked the feel of the establishment, but expected more for the money and better quality. I overlooked that the theme was geared toward small plate which is why the menu was twice the size of the food menu. Disappointed in the bone marrow croquette as it was oily and the breading overpowered the actual marrow. Service was great! The crab over seaweed salad was good but not great and a very small portion. The mussels were the best of 'em with a rich buttery broth and small pieces of potato that were tenderly perfect. Dessert wasn't bad, had the beignets, tiramisu, and boozy popsicle and with having small plates for dinner, left enough room to have dessert and not feel stuffed.

    Beautiful food, the tartare was one of the best we’ve ever had! Burrata was almost dessert like served. Wish there was more sea urchin on the king crab! Graham was at the restaurant tonight, I personally feel that always adds a touch when the owner stays grounded to his staff and on top of the service. We’ll definitely be back to try the other things on the menu that we couldn’t fit in our stomachs this time!

    Presentation for the food was nice, however disappointed in the dishes. They were lacking flavor. Two items out of the seven we ordered we're bland. Unfortunate...

    Wow...Gideon Sweet was amazing! The food, service and ambiance was spot on. The dishes that really excited me were the Strawberry Burrata, Warm King Crab, Roasted Corn Tortellini and the Beef Tartare. This is the perfect restaurant for getting a bunch of different menu items and sharing with the table. Trust me, you will want to try everything!

    Service is a bit lacking. Food was fair, was expecting a bit more - not terrible, just lacked. Service could have been the negative that overshadowed what might have been a good meal.

    Great quality, tiny portions. We ordered the king crab first and were SO disappointed by the portion. It was delicious, but, really, we each had two small bites and it was gone. For $20. The octopus was so much better and redeemed the crab. We loved both, but felt we received a much better portion for the price with the octopus. The lamb gyro meatball was mostly just ok. Seemed to lack flavor but was a slightly better portion. Overall nice experience, nice cocktails, great service. Probably wouldn’t go back but enjoyed it the one time.
