Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse - Chicago Ratings and Reviews
Service is always stellar here. Accommodated three people vs two and holding our table 45 minutes until delayed flight guest arrived. Waiters are top notch. Bean soup starter, steaks, and sides were fabulous. Carrot cake was not as good as in the past, although portion was still huge. Manhattan in bar was stellar, but second one in restaurant had crushed ice and was not well mixed.
We came for an early Valentine celebration. I ordered my filet medium well done and it was very red. I sent it back and they cooked it longer but was still red. Not at all what I would consider medium well. The server didn’t apologize or ask if it was better when he brought it back. Not our best experience at Gibson’s.
If you have left with anything other than a great experience, it's probably your fault as you are checked on and asked if anything and everything exceeds your expectations! Gibson's has been doing this long enough that they know what it takes. Always a fantastic meal and service. Always memorable!
Schade
Steaks were pretty good, but they seem to have lost sight of what a char on a steak is for. There was actual charcoal on my 26 oz porterhouse, rather than the singe on the edge of the fat that adds flavor.
My companion's steak (The WR Chicago cut) was very juicy and both steaks were cooked properly. I really don't think either steak was the weight listed on the menu, as I eat and prep a LOT of steaks and have a pretty good idea visually what a 26/18 oz steak looks like.
Her salad was half frozen on the bottom and consisted of the 'butt' end of an iceberg head rather than the leafy greens you'd expect. My soup was okay but for a split pea with ham didn't really have any taste of ham, nor chunks of ham as I expected. Neither of us actually wanted a soup or salad to go with the steak, but the server seemed unwilling to sub in ANYTHING for us.
Oddly, they removed the bread from the table before the steaks arrived. I like to use a nice crusty piece of bread to absorb some of the steak juices. Helps to extend the experience for me.
The server just didn't seem into the meal at all. She really seemed like she would have rather been doing ANYTHING ELSE but helping us enjoy a meal. She also seemed like she didn't enjoy steak or serving it. A server at an expensive steakhouse like Gibson's should freaking LOVE steak, should be bubbling over to help you get the most out of the meal, should be oozing their enthusiasm for that wonder of wonders, a perfect steak. Her...indifference certainly put a damper on the evening.
And HOLY COW did everyone in the restaurant seem to be having a birthday that night! I understand wanting to help them celebrate, but when every six minutes the staff is gathering to SHOUT.... It can make it harder to enjoy a meal.
Basically, Gibson's has a great rep but it wasn't in evidence for our night there. Not sure if I will return.
Gibsons is a classic Chicago steakhouse for a reason. Steaks and side dishes were really good as expected. Side salad that comes with the entrees was not the highest quality by any means. It is apparently a very popular place for birthdays given the 80+ times we had to sit through their birthday chant. At least they keep it brief. Great cakes though, so not surprised. Over all, 4/5. A step above Flemming's but not at the level of Maple and Ash, Swift & Sons, or Bavettes.
One of my friends recommended Gibson’s to my husband and I for our Chicago trip, so we went for dinner! Any time there’s an option for a bone in filet and/or ribeye we are all for it. I ordered between medium rare and medium and it was waaay overcooked and dry because of that. Very disappointing. The twice baked potato was great and asparagus was great. The staff was very attentive and friendly but they didn’t ask about our food and we aren’t the kind of people to mention something like that even though our dinner was $250+ Luckily we stopped by Malone’s in Lexington, Ky the next night and had the BEST bone in filet we’ve ever had! Their asparagus was better too. We won’t go back to Gibson’s.
we had a fantastic dinner. I got the Filet and my husband got the Australian NY Strip. Both were cooked to perfection. They had nice sides to choose from, and they were family style in generous portions. We were too full for any desserts but the list looked incredible.
I highly recommend going here if you are in Chicago
Food was excellent. Quick service. Extensive wine list. Our waiter direct and to the point. Not rude but very close, slapped out plates down on table. It was hard to tell if it was because it was a long day or just him. The place was super packed. We made reservations with Open Table 45 mins before arriving and glad we did it we wouldn't have found a seat. If you are a dessert lover you'll need to leave room. The cakes were over 4lbs, so use caution.
