Drink service took a long time. The food was barely edible. Ordered the beef short ribs from the menu but what was brought was two entire beef ribs without meat on them. Though there was plenty of fat and grissle on them.
Simply perfect. Thank you so much for this special evening!
Amazingly excellent grilled carrots, beautiful chicken dumplings though 3 would have been a better proportion than 2. Steak was delicious, though again portion size should gave been increased, mushrooms were exquisite. The chef and service would get 4.5, the ambience tries, but errs toward 70s tacky, could use more irony if aiming that way. A slight decor upgrade would definitely make us bring people there for entertaining...
The food was good, we had excellent service from our waiter and the menu is very unique. It is a good spot to eat if one is attending the Golden Gate Theatre.
The unique part of the menu is the freshly baked sourdough with a variety of choices. We had the cheese dish and it was excellent.
But the restaurant is overpriced. I had a plate of three scallops. They were good and larger than usual. But not worth the price of $39.
The cocktails are traditional, but really kicked up a notch. Yes, it's a gibson, but with seaweed or garden herbs? Pretty creative, and 4/4 we tried were great. It's a small menu, but everything is excellent. The duck for two is really for three. Two visits, and everything (total 8-9 dishes?) was traditional plus a kick in the pants. Service is prompt and friendly. It's a block from BART. This is a good place.
Wine: Banshee Pinot Noir by the carafe (on tap), and the cuvee blanc were both great. (The wine list on line is not up to date, but it is select, comparable, and excellent.)
I wish the bathroom didn't have stinky soap, though.
Very interesting cocktails. delicious small plates. excellent scallops and duck.
The food is excellent.
However the menu on open table does not at all match the price or type of food that they offer.
They need to update the menu on open table so that people know what to expect.
Decor/ambiance were the best part. Decent option for pre-theater dinner/drinks in a not-so-great neighborhood. Good service and drinks. Food menu was limited and some items were great but others were less than stellar and small portions for the price. The sourdough bread and cultured butter was the best! Worst dish was the avocado with sunchokes, I think we probably should have sent it back.
A very nice place I've never heard of Gibson but I now know it's the perfect place to go before the show.
Where do I start??? We did the full tasting Menue with wine and it was the most magical dinner I have ever had. My Husband surprised me with a date nite and we were wined and dined. Looking forward to going back!
An unexpected gem. Very close to theaters. The food was inventive and fun. Everything was very enjoyable. Art deco decor was fun and whimsical without being gaudy.
Had an amazing experience at Gibson with my friend this past weekend! From the deliciously inventive cocktails to the exquisite dinner entrees and the attentive and informative service, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our night dining at Gibson. Highly recommended!
If you are interested in an expensive special treat, try the tasting menu at Gibson's. Pros: interesting and tasty food with good service. Cons: can be very expensive. The cost adds up, but if you want drinks and some appetizers it can be reasonable.
Didn’t give us eating utensil until there’s 3 course left.
The duck dish is just terrible
Good food. Limited menu, but what they prepare is delicious!
The food is amazing. This was my second trip to Gibson, and like the first time I was extremely happy. The chef is an artist with food. It is beautifully prepared and delicious. The service was also outstanding. I will be back again to worship the food here!
We had the $55 tasting menu and it was inventive and delicious. A lovely dining room too. Good for a quiet dinner and a pre-theater dinner.
Beautiful atmosphere; great drinks; great service; just the kitchen and bar was really slow, but maybe it was a new bartender
We went to Gibson with over an hour and a half before our show tickets. We told our server about our plans, however our food came so late that we couldn't even enjoy it. We had about 5 minutes to run out the door. Our server never came over to explain what was going on. Never came back to offer another drink, just purposefully avoided eye contact. We observed other patrons gulping their food as well - or chosing to leave before the food came. It wasn't crowded, so I don't know why the service was so poor.
We had an excellent 60-day aged rib, which we were able to share. The food was superb, but the service was only fair. We needed to make an effort to get the waiter's attention a couple of times (this should never happen), and the drinks we ordered were initially brought to the table next to us.
Extremely pricing, small portions but great food
I have had dinner at Gibson three times and on the first occasion I loved the food and service. On the second occasion the service had gotten a bit slow. I just had dinner there with 4 friends on Fri, January 28th and the service was atrocious. The service was sooo slow and the restaurant wasn't even full.
This was my experience:
- arrived on time for 8pm reservation. We waited 10 minutes at the concierge because no one was there.
- we sat down and received our drink menus. We waited 20 mins for him to return to take drink orders.
- the drinks arrived 25 minutes after we ordered. We had now been sitting 40 mins with water at our table.
- getting our food order in took forever too with 20 min gaps between waiter appearing at table
- when the first food item came out the chief delivered it and we had no silverware and he didn't notice
- I flagged down a waiter for silverware. He brought the wood boxes with utensils. There was dried food on the fork so I had to flag him down again for an exchange.
- once drinks finally arrived there were huge lags of time between courses
- the pace really killed the positive vibe we had for the meal
- the waiter was friendly but seemed oblivious to the snail pace of service
- the food was excellent fortunately, but I wouldn't come back with service like this
The food is very well prepared with a great chef. Service is very good and attentive. You will pay for creativity if that 's what you want.
Very nice, quaint restaurant nestled in San Francisco. Excellent guest service and outstanding food with a limited menu.
Expensive for what you get, it’s not top level food for the price, but the cocktails and small plates are good, so I definitely recommend the bar for drinks and bites.
Just keeps getting better and more creative. Couldn’t be more pleased with the service and the food.
The food and service here were absolutely top notch. I will definitely be returning! Did the prix fixe dinner which had great value for the cost. Normally I would say the place was a little pricey but you really get what you pay for! Small side note I really loved their utensils and the way they presented them in that wooden box. I will be back!
The food was great. Truly very savory and diverse from course to course. I thought the service was lacking. Granted it was New Year's Eve, I think service needs to be more on point than any other standard night of the week. The bartender seemed aggravated and generally overwhelmed. He provided complementary champagne, but our table was already for us to be seated. The champagne wasn't very cold and the pour was too limited. When we were seated the waiter did not take us through the menu/what to expect which is typical of any pre set 4 course situation. We ordered wine and it would take ages to get to the table. Our seating was 9:00pm and we did not get out of there until mid night. We had planned to leave absolutely no later than 11:30PM in order to ring in the new year elsewhere. So, net net the attention to service/detail and extended lapse time really trumped how great the food was. I didnt pick up the bill, but suspect the cost outweighed the overall experience.
NYE was amazing! Adam, Simon, Charlie and Leila were all fabulous and provided a memorable experience.
Tasty food but small portions. Service was friendly but noticeably inattentive despite a pretty empty restaurant.
I loved the interior design of this restaurant. It’s very elegant. A good mix of classic and modern details.
Food is good I didn’t like the fact that the menu is conceived essentially for sharing. Portions are ridiculously small example : the cauliflower side dish comes in a tiny tiny cocotte.
You end up paying a lot for a little food. If the portions were normal I would go there again.
Great staff and service. Very nice decor
Food is very good - but service needs work. Unfortunately, they will need to improve service before I can recommen this restaurant.
The food was excellent, really unique, this place is great for foodies. One caution: They had a sign outside that said they had valet parking, but they didn't, and we were late getting started by 30 minutes because other parking options they said they had arrangements with claimed that wasn't true. Much time wasted. So don't depend on the signs here, but enjoy the food once you arrive.
We highly recommend the chef's tasting menu. It was an eclectic exploration of many wonderful and varied tastes and textures, not only appealing to the eye with decorative presentations but tantalizing to the tongue.
Creative cocktails and well paired wines. Excellent unrushed service including the extra effort of food served and explained by the friendly chef.
This culminated in an enchanting culinary evening.
We waited an hour and a half for entrees that never arrived. We ended up leaving at 9:00 without food and without an explanation as to why it took so long. The waiter didn’t keep us informed at all and we had to flag him down several times. Really disappointing.
Food was subpar but very pricey. The restaurant was nearly empty but we were treated as though we didn’t belong there. Was it because we weren’t dressed up enough wearing a button down (me) and a dress (my girlfriend)? Or was it because we are black? I don’t know. But the servers and staff were extremely rude to us. The menu also doesn’t make sense and adds up quickly. It’s not a small plates restaurant but a “build your own tasting menu” where the prices are as expensive as a full meal. Strongly do not recommend.
I’m not sure what Gibson is going for? The food was essentially “bites” & flavorful. The steak was maybe 6 oz, sliced for 32. I am not a person who cares about the cost of dinner or a night out, but we were left feeling underwhelmed by our whole experience. We were the only table in the place, although it was an early reservation. Glad we tried it, but won’t be back.
