Gianni's Cafe - Palatine Ratings and Reviews
Joined daughter and her boyfriend to celebrate Mom's bday. Gianni's, in our hometown, Palatine and near the train station (kid commuted from Logan's Square) is just too convenient & offers a scrumptious, diverse menu that more than satisfied all (and provided 2-3 meals worth of leftovers that headed back to Logan Square).
Overall the food was good. Halibut special was fantastic but filet trios were dry and over cooked. Pasta dishes were very good. Service was very slow however. Very little attention to the table and checking back if we needed anything. So overall the experience was fair.
The menu was diverse and the food was good. Everyone liked their pasta. The service was very good and they were very accommodating to my 5 year old. The wine/drink menu was good. They brought out a free piece of tiramisu because we were celebrating my birthday. It was ok but the other two desserts the the table ordered were pretty bad- caramel covered carrot cake and a lemon berry cake that sounded great but tasted like something you'd get from a cheap buffet. Even the ice cream was low quality. The service was really good and when they heard that we didn't like our desserts, they took them off the bill which was nice. I would go back there for food and drinks but not for dessert.
We had a double date, and ordered sea food and wine. Although our table had a low, flickering candle, we rationalized that as helping to promote the mood. There were children there, some of them behaved, but we stayed for three hours, had excellent food, wine and coffee afterward. The wait staff was extremely friendly and courteous and the food was beyond good. We are definitely going back. We also appreciated the valet service since there was a terrible storm, the one that stemmed from the tornados down south, but we didn't notice it at all--just the pleasant hum of conversation and soothing vibe.
We were goinng to be in the palatine area and I wanted to find a place to eat and I was looking for something a little romantic. I found it! Gianni's was perfect, white table cloths, quiet atmosphere, a beautiful bistro-cafe type resturant. The food was outstanding as was the service. It was a beautiful place to share some quiet time with the love of my life.
We will be back!
Service very slow between courses. My wife's Eggplant Parmesan was good and a large serving. Gorgonzola salad would have been better with a more traditional vinegar and oil dressing instead of what appeared to be a commercial dressing from Kraft or some other manufacturer. Cocktails were great. My entree of filet trio with gorgonzola was a disappointment. It had very little cheese and not much flavor. Baked potato was held in a steam table much too long and could not believe the waitress couldn't provide sour cream when requested. Finally, price was very high for quality/value delivered. I will not be back.
We enjoyed our first brunch there on Sunday and this time we tried it on a Saturday. There appeared to be only one waitress there on that day so I think Saturday is a slower day for Brunch. The food is still good although I suspect if more folks are there on a traditional Sunday brunch, the turn-around will be faster and the food will be fresher spending less time in the buffet pan. Like Sunday, their Saturday brunch has some dinner items as well as breakfast items. The only thing missing is soup and it is no big deal to me.
We ordered a small calamari appetizer, it came out very quickly, not completely done. I ordered the baked artichoke. It was super much, soaking in broth and oil. Not very flavorful My husband loved his chicken spedinii, very good! It was very difficult to walK thru to your table. Servers had to take turns to get by the tables.Take a few tables out, and serve the tables with ease.
I went there with my family on a Sunday and their brunch is of excellent value. Except for the chicken tender, I love all the food items I tried on that day. In addition to the usual breakfast items such as french toasts, eggs and beacon, there were several dinner items as well. I am surprised that they even includes some shrimp cocktails as cold cut on the desert table. Custom made omelette and pasta can also be ordered.
The restaurant had a great atmosphere and decent service. For the price I would say that the atmosphere and service were up to par. As for the food, it was not good. I went with 3 other people, not including myself and we all were not satisfied with our meals. Not completely satisfied with food but am willing to try once more.
We had a great meal here about a year ago but, this time we were very disappointed in the food. We had a group of 5 and each ordered something different. Everything was bland and just OK. Service and ambiance are very good so this it is very disappointng that the food was so blah.
I was amazed at the very first time I was here. So busy, had to sit by the kitchen counter. Didn't have a reservation but it was a very good meal.
Second time , day before Valentine's.
Service was stoic. Reservation on Opentable gave us 10pm table time. Kitchen closes at 10....? Called to change time several days before. Person did a good job of really not knowing what to do. Called a second time next day. Left message and they called back and made the time for 9pm. Ok. Another couple joined us by chance. Host was happy but they came at 9:30. Inconvenient for waitress and maybe kitchen. Four entrees and two bottles of wine. No tray of dessert offered after just a menu and no espresso available.
(While we sipped our wine and waited for the other couple, we watched as the wait staff presented the dessert tray and looked forward to that part of the meal. Espresso machine was off when we wanted one because it was time to close.)
Listen, if you are open to serve , the same ambiance should be given to the last paying customer. Even the music changed when they were preparing to close . You crushed our night out which we based our first great experience on and even invited another couple for the experience.
More money , no? We eat out a lot. Manager better understand thats what the job is...service.
Otherwise , don't take late reservations if you're not going to serve them as you would everyone else and can't wait to go home.
We appreciated that there was enough spacing between tables so that one does not feel like they are a part of neighboring conversations.
My wife and I both ordered the Sea Bass and shared an order of mussels. The fish and mussels were prepared to perfection. However, we found the sides lacking. The spinach was very stringy and bitter and we have had better roasted potatoes.
As the restaurant was not very busy, we were surprised at the slow service. The wine order was not taken until after we were almost finished with our appetizer. In addition, grated black pepper and parmesan cheese should be offered when the salad is served not when the diner is almost finished eating.
We are open to giving a restaurant a second-chance, but with many very good choices in the area, will not rush a return visit.
This was our first time dining at this restaurant, We were very happy with the wait staff. Their professionalism and attentiveness to our dining needs was a pleasure. They explained the Chefs specials, and the many choices of dishes on the menu were plentiful. When the food arrived it not only looked great, it was very delicious.
We will definitely be back again. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.
Great food here. Other thsn the long black hsir we found in the lobster appitzer. The app was comped off the bill. Service was average. ,was not nearly as good as the food. I would come back for the food. We were seated right on time for our reservation, and they did honor my request fir a table off to the side
Location is nice, facility is attractive and service is great.
Three of us dined, my pennie dish ( a special for the day) went back to thicken up. Came out noodles in a white soup with no taste, came back in a thick cheesy white sauce very tasty (someone forgot something). The other two meals were fine.
DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE OF WINE TO THIS RESTURANT, $25.00 Corking Fee.
The stuffed green pepper had no taste. The bass was moist delicious except too much garlic. We've been coming here since you opened and never ever had a complaint. It happens once in a while. It's always a pleasure to be served by Laurie, a very caring person
We came here for my beautiful girlfriends birthday. Not only was the atmosphere romantic and quiet, the food was also extremely delicious. In particular the linguine was tasteful and absolutely phenomenal. We will be returning in the future, perhaps on my birthday.
Our experiences here are always hit or miss yet something keeps bringing us back. I like the wine list and I can find many things to accommodate my dietary restriction. Next time don't recommend cheese risotto with shrimp though. Not one of the best things I've eaten.
When I suggested to my friends that we try somewhere different for New Years Eve this year, no one wanted to. Gianni's has been super reliable over the years in terms of food quality, and they have the best wait staff in Palatine. Country Rigatoni is a best bet. Suprema sauce is awesome. My grouper special was overcooked, which is why I gave 4 stars and not 5.
I've been here before and each time I go I ask myself why I went back. The food is way overpriced and not that great. Why does the kitchen feel it must drown everything in cheese or sauce? When a restaurant does that I feel they are covering up inferior cooking. The small Caesar salad had WAY too much dressing on it and the Parmesean shrimp appetizer was drowned in marinara sauce. I thought maybe if I stayed away from the entrees, then I would avoid what I previously complained about. My friends ordered entrees and theirs were swimming in sauces. The baked shrimp was over pasta, but there had to have been a half inch of sauce swimming under the pasta. Of course, my friend was not happy with that. See, that's what I'm talking about!
We have been here a few times (initially recommended by a co-worker). We live in the area and this is our regular go-to spot now whenever we celebrate a special occasion or just want a nice dinner out. The ambiance is great and if you go early enough, it is not crowded and there is plenty of their delicious focaccia bread to go around (I guess they only make a few batches per night and it goes quickly!).
We brought our teenage daughter on our last visit there and she loved it too. The portions are generous, prices are a bit high but overall worth it. Service is always good and I've never had a bad meal there. It is nice in the warmer months to just stroll around downtown palatine after dinner here. There is even a cute ice cream place if you have room for desert. This is a nice treat. Just an overall good energy about this place and good food to boot!
