About Gertrude's - Baltimore
Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting.
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.

Gertrude's - Baltimore Ratings and Reviews
There was a large table of patrons that were celebrating something so was very loud. But after they left better. The crab cake special was great and berry salad was okay but grilled shrimp was over cooked. We had to ask for bread that was delivered to others as a matter of course. . But all in all a very pleasant experience.
Lovely restaurant, delicious food in a great museum. Enjoy a special day out in the museum and a fabulous meal. This restaurant will not disappoint. We brought relatives from Florida and they were really impressed with the quality and variety. One of our guests is a Vegetarian and there was many options for her as well. We live in the suburbs it will become our place to take all our guests no need to go to DC!
In Baltimore for conference went to the BMA for coupe hours then dinner at Gertrude's. Wonderful selections. The I cant believe its not crab was very nice. spinach a little salty.
Really enjoyed the sorbet sampler, pear best, apple bourbon rasberry and butter squash were our group if 4s vote.
Very disappointed with the Valentines Tea. Arrived 5 minutes early and was told our table was being prepared. 15 minutes later I inquired again and we were seated with many open tables. My tea curdled when I added cream- was there lemon in my cup. Server was not attentive- had to ask for a second tea bag on my 3rd pot- very small pots. Lastly, my favorite, the salmon salad was a tiny portion, though the table near us had a much larger sandwich. As Gertrudes is our special occasion restaurant, this was not up to your usual standards.
My companion and I enjoyed a light lunch of the soup de jour (delicious honey squash puree), spicy vegetarian chili, and classic Caesar salad. Despite the tables being full and the wait staff very busy, our waitpersons were attentive and John Shields himself came by to greet us. It was great.
Very disappointing and over priced ... roasted vegetable and cream of crab soups besides being small portions for the price were served lukewarm. The crab cakes were terrible and the steamed vegetables were tasteless. "Gertie's broiled all lump"crab cakes were no doubt pan fried despite the staff's insistence that they were broiled and not not a lump of crab meat in sight... full of filler and most likely claw meat... and also served lukewarm.Definitely not what this place was touted to be and we will never go back.
We had dinner at Gertrude's last Tuesday night when the BAM is closed and Gertrude's is only open for dinner and features a special Tuesday-onlu prix fix menu for $30.00 for three courses and coffee/tea and some wine list offerings for $20.00 a bottle. A meal at Gertrude's is well worthwhile with the regular menu, featuring some of the best food in Baltimore, but the special pricing on Tuesday evenings makes it something not to be missed.
Very good value for Restaurant Week dinner: started with grilled oysters with tasso ham. then rockfish stuffed with lump crabmeat-- delicious, and very tender brisket with a meaty gravy and mashed potatoes. Cocktails imaginative, service as usual was attentive without being overwhelming. The only disappointment was dessert: a tasteless tart with a too-soft pastry and vegan"cream" that tasted like cool whip and a mulled pear sorbet with no taste of pear
Why we truly enjoyed the service and the food, we were disappointed that the hostess seated a younger couple next to us in a busy dining room who were focused on taking flash phone camera selfies and pictures of their food throughout dinner. This was a significant distraction and made it a challenge enjoying my wife’s and my date night. We would have appreciated it if the staff would have intervened and suggested that their activities were a distraction to their neighbors.
Wait staff super friendly, efficient , excellent.
Food; I had the Crab Cake; very disappointing , too much mayo and bread crumb... Where’s the Crab? Husband had Filet Mingon; he said it was Dry and Cold.
Food Did Not match our previous experience at Gertrudes. Not sure we will ever return.
Staff was Fabulous; super friendly , very professional , music ( guitarist) was excellent ; created a relaxed and memorable atmosphere . We left happy but the food had nothing to do with it.
Have been to Gertrude's many times and it is consistently outstanding. The food is always excellent and this visit was no exception. This is the first time, however, that we found the service to be lacking. Things started off rough with cocktails and appetizers, but did smooth out later in the meal. As well, one of the waiters showed a bit of attitude - also something we are not used to there. Hopefully it was just an off night as Gertrude's is always one of our favorite restaurants.
Gertrude is always a great place to find. We took my son's girlfriend there for her birthday. We had a great waiter, Richard. The food was excellent. She loved her crab cake. The restaurant made her birthday extra special when the dessert was provided. We love the atmosphere. There was also live music...exceptional touch.
Had a nice time and meal during restaurant week. Service was a bit slow at the beginning; took a while for our waitress to come to us and our seat was not great given that there were better seats available. Dinner was great; wine pairings were great; dessert was not so great.
Overall, always a nice place to come for a meal out.
