About Gertrude's - Baltimore
Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting.
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.

Gertrude's - Baltimore Ratings and Reviews
Very good value for Restaurant Week dinner: started with grilled oysters with tasso ham. then rockfish stuffed with lump crabmeat-- delicious, and very tender brisket with a meaty gravy and mashed potatoes. Cocktails imaginative, service as usual was attentive without being overwhelming. The only disappointment was dessert: a tasteless tart with a too-soft pastry and vegan"cream" that tasted like cool whip and a mulled pear sorbet with no taste of pear
Why we truly enjoyed the service and the food, we were disappointed that the hostess seated a younger couple next to us in a busy dining room who were focused on taking flash phone camera selfies and pictures of their food throughout dinner. This was a significant distraction and made it a challenge enjoying my wife’s and my date night. We would have appreciated it if the staff would have intervened and suggested that their activities were a distraction to their neighbors.
Wait staff super friendly, efficient , excellent.
Food; I had the Crab Cake; very disappointing , too much mayo and bread crumb... Where’s the Crab? Husband had Filet Mingon; he said it was Dry and Cold.
Food Did Not match our previous experience at Gertrudes. Not sure we will ever return.
Staff was Fabulous; super friendly , very professional , music ( guitarist) was excellent ; created a relaxed and memorable atmosphere . We left happy but the food had nothing to do with it.
Have been to Gertrude's many times and it is consistently outstanding. The food is always excellent and this visit was no exception. This is the first time, however, that we found the service to be lacking. Things started off rough with cocktails and appetizers, but did smooth out later in the meal. As well, one of the waiters showed a bit of attitude - also something we are not used to there. Hopefully it was just an off night as Gertrude's is always one of our favorite restaurants.
Gertrude is always a great place to find. We took my son's girlfriend there for her birthday. We had a great waiter, Richard. The food was excellent. She loved her crab cake. The restaurant made her birthday extra special when the dessert was provided. We love the atmosphere. There was also live music...exceptional touch.
Had a nice time and meal during restaurant week. Service was a bit slow at the beginning; took a while for our waitress to come to us and our seat was not great given that there were better seats available. Dinner was great; wine pairings were great; dessert was not so great.
Overall, always a nice place to come for a meal out.
We were seated at the exact time of our reservation. I had asked for a table along the exterior of the area as the noise level is much lower than in the middle of the dining room & this was done. The crab cake entree and seafood gumbo were excellent. The accompanying California Chardonnay was perfect with the food. We were not rushed and the pace of lunch was perfect. We had time for coffee & lots of good exercise.
I can’t think of a better way to spend a cold winter afternoon than a morning in the museum & lunch at Gertrude’s afterwards.
Service and food were both excellent! The portion sizes were a little unbalanced with some diners receiving significantly more food with their entrees than others, but that’s not much to quibble about! The cozy atmosphere and strategically placed tables make this spot a great option for date night. Overall, my group of six all left very full and satisfied!
Had an exceptionally pleasant meal and experience. Our server was great - efficient and personable. We ordered from the Retaurant Week menu and can't wait to come back to order from the regular menu. I am especially pleased to see such variety in vegan and vegetarian options.
This was a great Restaurant Week experience. Unlike some of the trendier options, the portions are substantial so you don't leave hungry. The wine pairings were also a good deal -- three full glasses for $15. My only complaint was that there was a little too much time between courses; the restaurant seemed understaffed.
Have been here twice. Both times the food was very good but the service not so much. We were seated and a waiter arrived to take a drink order. Drinks arrived. 10-15 minutes later, a young lady, not our waiter, showed up and asked if we wanted to order any appetizers. So we ordered from her. 10 minutes later, our waiter reappeared and asked if we wanted to order appetizers! A third server delivered our appetizers. Took at least 15 minutes before our waiter appeared to take our dinner order and he didn't seem quite sure if our dinner order was already in. The 3rd server again delivered our food (he seemed very nice). Didn't see our waiter for awhile. Flagged down the young lady who had taken our app order to ask for ketchup and more iced tea. Our waiter did show back up to take the dessert order. But then no one delivered the check. 20 minutes after we finished dessert we flagged down a 4th person and asked for our check. I know restaurants do "team" serving instead of 1 wait staff to a table, but it doesn't always work.
So even though we enjoy the food at Gertrude's, considering that both times we visited, we had to flag down wait staff AND the wait staff seems confused or unorganized as to who is responsible for what, not sure we will return.
This was my first time at Gertrude’s. I’ll need to return many more times to try so many of the other menu items. The crab cake and fried oysters were so fresh and flavorful. The biscuits reminded me of those made in Alabama. The cheesecake and the panna cotta were unique and so very good. Service was exceptional. The server was knowledgeable about menu items. If you’re in Baltimore, visit Gertrudes.
I love going to the BMA and then to Gertrude’s-such a perfect treat! It was birthday and our server was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The food was very good, plentiful (without being gluttonus) and interesting. The lavender pancetta was fabulous and I almost never get dessert. Also, my husband’s a vegetarian and they have plenty of real options. We had a great time and I was recommend Gertrude’s!
Enjoyed a proper Caesar salad and the best root vegetable soup you can imagine. Then, for dessert, a rich, warm, buttery bread pudding with housemade peanut brittle on the side and whipped cream. Coffee was excellent, moderately strong but mellow (Zeke’s), and the attentive waitperson topped it off. My companion had the crab soup, which she proclaimed excellent. Very, very satisfying experience.
The restaurant was just right for two friends getting together, from the warm greeting to the good food and great and attentive service. The crab cakes were very good, tasty and sufficient, and the vegetables were also good as was the little corn bread muffins.
We had a wonderful lunch at Gertrude’s last week! We had a 12:15 reservation and were seated within 5 minutes. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. There are many delicious offerings on the menu at lunchtime and it was hard to decide what to get! After ordering we noticed that tables around us had bread baskets. We asked for one and it helped tide us over until the food arrived. Our cheeseburger and turkey burgers were delicious. My husband ordered crab quiche and salad and he loved it. The atmosphere was pretty as it was decorated for the holidays. I can’t wait to return to Gertrude’s to try some of the other dishes.
