About Gertrude's - Baltimore

Gertrude's Restaurant, located inside the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), is where John Shields celebrates Chesapeake cuisine using local foods, in a warm and stylish setting.
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.

Had an exceptionally pleasant meal and experience. Our server was great - efficient and personable. We ordered from the Retaurant Week menu and can't wait to come back to order from the regular menu. I am especially pleased to see such variety in vegan and vegetarian options.

This was a great Restaurant Week experience. Unlike some of the trendier options, the portions are substantial so you don't leave hungry. The wine pairings were also a good deal -- three full glasses for $15. My only complaint was that there was a little too much time between courses; the restaurant seemed understaffed.

Have been here twice. Both times the food was very good but the service not so much. We were seated and a waiter arrived to take a drink order. Drinks arrived. 10-15 minutes later, a young lady, not our waiter, showed up and asked if we wanted to order any appetizers. So we ordered from her. 10 minutes later, our waiter reappeared and asked if we wanted to order appetizers! A third server delivered our appetizers. Took at least 15 minutes before our waiter appeared to take our dinner order and he didn't seem quite sure if our dinner order was already in. The 3rd server again delivered our food (he seemed very nice). Didn't see our waiter for awhile. Flagged down the young lady who had taken our app order to ask for ketchup and more iced tea. Our waiter did show back up to take the dessert order. But then no one delivered the check. 20 minutes after we finished dessert we flagged down a 4th person and asked for our check. I know restaurants do "team" serving instead of 1 wait staff to a table, but it doesn't always work.
So even though we enjoy the food at Gertrude's, considering that both times we visited, we had to flag down wait staff AND the wait staff seems confused or unorganized as to who is responsible for what, not sure we will return.

Excellent food, with some interesting choices. Good service; lively atmosphere. Only issue was being seated near a door to the outside tented area, so that any time a waiter came/went to that area, there was a blast of cold air.

This was my first time at Gertrude’s. I’ll need to return many more times to try so many of the other menu items. The crab cake and fried oysters were so fresh and flavorful. The biscuits reminded me of those made in Alabama. The cheesecake and the panna cotta were unique and so very good. Service was exceptional. The server was knowledgeable about menu items. If you’re in Baltimore, visit Gertrudes.

I love going to the BMA and then to Gertrude’s-such a perfect treat! It was birthday and our server was attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The food was very good, plentiful (without being gluttonus) and interesting. The lavender pancetta was fabulous and I almost never get dessert. Also, my husband’s a vegetarian and they have plenty of real options. We had a great time and I was recommend Gertrude’s!

Enjoyed a proper Caesar salad and the best root vegetable soup you can imagine. Then, for dessert, a rich, warm, buttery bread pudding with housemade peanut brittle on the side and whipped cream. Coffee was excellent, moderately strong but mellow (Zeke’s), and the attentive waitperson topped it off. My companion had the crab soup, which she proclaimed excellent. Very, very satisfying experience.

The restaurant was just right for two friends getting together, from the warm greeting to the good food and great and attentive service. The crab cakes were very good, tasty and sufficient, and the vegetables were also good as was the little corn bread muffins.

We had a wonderful lunch at Gertrude’s last week! We had a 12:15 reservation and were seated within 5 minutes. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. There are many delicious offerings on the menu at lunchtime and it was hard to decide what to get! After ordering we noticed that tables around us had bread baskets. We asked for one and it helped tide us over until the food arrived. Our cheeseburger and turkey burgers were delicious. My husband ordered crab quiche and salad and he loved it. The atmosphere was pretty as it was decorated for the holidays. I can’t wait to return to Gertrude’s to try some of the other dishes.

We eat at Gertrude's often because the food and service are excellent. They use local ingredients so everything is fresh. In summer you can eat on the patio overlooking the Baltimore Museum of Art sculpture garden, a unique ambience. The restaurant is elegantly decorated and quiet. On Wednesdays the wine is half price!

We enjoyed: delicious crabcakes, good wine recommendations from the waiter, prompt service but no feeling of being rushed, helpful modification of one of the desserts. Only issue: very slow service to the one of our party who wanted a cocktail before the meal. Overall a very pleasant experience.

Great selection for brunch and very fine (but small) desserts. Crap cakes are wonderful & priced high since they contain crab & not just breadcrumbs. Terrific that they offer at least 4 different styles & sauces. Only disappointment was the fruit salad --- pears were hard as bricks & the apples chunks were too big.

This is my favorite restaurant in Baltimore. It’s location at the Baltimore Museum of Art is lovely. It’s not only fantastic for an every day lunch or dinner, it is perfect for any special occasion. In 2013, we held our wedding reception here. The owners helped us plan a customized celebration with an exquisite menu and open bar. The food at Gertrudes is exceptional and consistently delicious with some unique “Eastern Shore” favorites. We highly recommend Gertrudes. It will soon become your favorite dining spot as well!

The food is always good with locally sourced ingredients. Our server Ronny was excellent. Because of its being in the museum garden, Gertrude’s is one of the most beautiful dining spots in the city. The owner and head chef John Shields is nationally known for his Chesapeake coastal cuisine. It is one of our go-to restaurants for lunch or dinner.

We have always enjoyed our dinners at Gertrude's but not so tonight. First, we had two parties of eight with tables that were not close but not an issue.
The issue was that the second table of seven was seated 20 minutes after our table, but they were served their food and finished before our table (about 25 minutes before we were finished?). We asked our waiter at one point where he had been and he responded that he had other tables to serve! Three if us ordered the fried chicken, but after a period of time our waiter showed up and stated the fried chicken had been sold out. He then acted totally confused as to who had ordered the chicken. When our food was served, several of the dishes were just warm. One person complained that his item was cold. The waiter came back and said the chef says it is suppose to be cold. This was a special Christmas Dinner of our church group. I don't want to think that the questionable service we received was attributable to the fact six members at our table were black. In any event, We did not receive the quality service we are accustomed to having at Gertrude's.

No complaints here! The 3 course $30 dinner along with the $20 bottle of wine available on Tuesday nights can’t be beat. Having Joe as our server made it even better. He was attentive and he has something many servers lack - personality. The holiday decor was lovely.

Usually I have no complaints about Gertrudes, however this last visit was not the best experience. The waiter never greeted us. It was more than ten minutes before he came to the table after he poured water to give us the specials menu. It was more than ten minutes before he cam back to take our order. I ordered the ribeye which was cooked perfectly medium rare, however it had more fat than meat. The greens were not tender and were cold. The mash potatoes were good. I hope this is not an indication that the establishment is going down hill.

Gertrude's is a gem, residing along side beautiful art at the Baltimore Museum of Art. I am a vegetarian and I will say that my meal was the best I've had in a very long time. My husband, a carnivore, also was beside himself at the perfection of his meal. We were there on a Wednesday, 1/2 price bottle and glass of wine...which made it even more divine. If you want a treat go to Gertrudes!

What a wonderful meal. We were not served by our favorite waiter, Eric but the new lady was also excellent. The staff had created Christmas row houses for the holiday and all the holiday decorations were on display!! What a special evening. My daughter celebrated her 20th bday on the Sunday prior so we were still in a joyous mood. Her ice cream sundae came out with a birthday candle which was perfect. We all voted for our favorite decorated Baltimore Rowhouse. Be sure to order the Swordfish on Gerties cafe Tuesday. It was perfection as was the car cake meal!! We LOVE Gerties
