Gertrude's - Baltimore
Chef & owner John Shields, a Baltimore native who is a cookbook author and television cooking show host, named the restaurant after his grandmother, Gertrude Cleary, who taught him to cook as a child. Gertrude's dishes up a sophisticated regional menu of Chesapeake foods and traditions for lunch, dinner, and brunch using local, organic ingredients whenever possible.
The restaurant's interior, inspired by life on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, is beautiful & elegant yet comfortable. The wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the museum’s Sculpture Garden floods the open & airy dining room with natural light. During the warmer months, additional seats are available on the terrace surrounding a fountain and reflecting pool.
Simply consistently excellent - food, service, ambiance - always a “go to favorite.”
The seasonal ingredients were really fresh. Love the creativity of the menu offerings. Service very attentive without being overbearing.
Gertrudes is always great--one of my all-time favorites.
Great, "Baltimore Inspired" cuisine in a the beautiful serene setting of The Baltimore Museum of Art...what could be bad????
my food was outstanding and a bargain at $15 for the special entree (drumfish)
The food is excellent and the waitress was good. However, the restaurant seems to be getting more and more packed and it's hard to hear and it's hard to move around in there. I felt claustrophobic.
We were very disturbed by the person at the front desk. Her looks were unappealing in a dining place, and she is so large it was awkward and difficult for her to get between the tables. And she was curt.
The waiter was uninvolved-he ordered the wrong soup for us and never came back, and we couldn’t get his attention, until after the entrees were served. We told the manager the wrong soup was delivered but by then my husband was eating some of it, we asked for the pea soup, that we ordered and he brought it but didn’t make any adjoin the bill for the mistake. The waiter forgot I’d asked for no ice and gave ice with the drink refill. Generally seemed perfunctory in his service. Overall, we were disappointed with the restaurant, because of these 2 employees, but was food was excellent.
Very disappointing!! We were seated in a far corner of the tent. There was no heat in that area and it was 55 degrees outside. The tent was cold and we asked a heater, like other portions of the tent had access too. We were told that they were working on it. That was a lie. Unacceptable to seat people outdoors with no heat.
I ordered the Mediterranean omelet without olives. Our waitress, Liz, told me that the kitchen could not accommodate that 'special order'. Seriously. I was handed a menu and asked to order something else. When did leaving one item out of an omelet become an ordeal?
Dress warmly and no special orders if you try this restaurant. I would advise against it.
We went for mothers day brunch
The food was pretty good but could be seasoned a bit more. The cream of crab soup tastes weird.
We have visited Gertrude's many times, including for Mother's Day, Father's Day and New Year's Eve. We have always enjoyed the food and the service is always on point. This past visit we dined in the outdoor seating area and it was wonderful. Anyone who hasn't dined at this restaurant has missed a great experience.
We love Gertrudes, and need to come back more often. We generally come a few times a year and every time we say "why don't we come more often"? the food is always fantastic, and the location is prime. One of the Baltimore regions culinary treasures.
Beautiful setting but food is average and prices are high for what you get. Service was great however the hostess was a little surly.
We had out of town guests from Seattle and wanted to take them to a good local place. As usual, Gertrude's didn't disappoint. And, it's at the BMA. As we're all art people, this is very cool.
Very pleasant restaurant in the Baltimore Museum of Art. The lunch menu is creative and makes good use of local seafood. The oysters and cream of crab soup were excellent. Highly recommended for a lovely lunch after a museum visit. Garden is also lovely.
It was just a very, very pleasant lunch experience. The Middle Eastern Platter was wonderful.
I've been to Gertrude's many times in the 1990s. You are still the finest. I used to live across the street. Thank you 😊
Crab cakes are always on the menu (Never eat crab cakes outside of Maryland!) and make sure to try the cornbread which is in the bread basket. There is a wide selection of items on the regular menu and there is always a list of specials. There is something good on the menu for everyone and one can eat light or heavy.
Gertrude's is a terrific restaurant ... we love the atmosphere and the varied menu. We came to dinner on a busy Thursday evening with relatives from out of town and it was a perfect choice. After our lovely meal we walked out into the sculpture garden because it was such a pretty night. Couldn't have chosen a nicer place for a delicious and easy meal in a lovely setting.
I think you’re losing it. Tonight was not the classy service I’ve always come to expect. This is the second time i’ve brought a friend and bragged before hand about the service and the food. Tonight it was subpar.
I had to ask three people to bring a bread basket including the waiter. Finally the bread basket was brought after they brought the food. I asked that person to please bring bread back they didn’t. and a third person had to be asked and it finally appeared. All the other diners appeared to have bread baskets placed on their table shortly after they were seated. My cream of crab soup which is usually beyond delicious was bitter and over seasoned.
It would be nice to have more than one very small chunk of goat cheese on the very berry salad. My friend said her sandwich was just OK. We’re not complainers. it was just unbelievable. The waiter seemed very dis-interested in waiting on our table. The waiter gave us no check back to see if the food was OK. Nothing. He did seem interested in asking us if we were finished eating twice though. Trying to rush us out? You sure weren’t busy enough to warrant people waiting to get in.
You need to work on your customer service and your food quality. I’ve come here for years and brought friends for dining experiences that were just phenomenal. I’m not so sure that I can count on that anymore.
The blueberry and lemon pepper cheese cake was fantastic ! I wish it was a regular dessert menu item .
Love dining at Gertrude’s! Great food, superb service & a beautiful setting...
What more could you ask for!?!
Nice place I like to go to. The waiter that served me in the past is a bit standoffish and diminishes with his attitude my experience and enjoyment. Not good. Next time I might just ask to not be served by him.
I LOVED having brunch at Gertrude's!!!!! The staff are friendly and professional, the food was great, and I LOVED the ambience because of the jazz music, beautiful decor, and the surroundings because it is in the museum. I plan to return many times in the future!!!!
There was a very loud birthday party of 30 people and they took away our dining pleasure.
It’s a shame to have had our evening ruined by obnoxious, inconsiderate people.
My favorite restaurant. The are also very socially conscious.
It is a bit of a hidden gem for the city. It is a nice option to add-on to a museum visit/date, but certainly worth the trip by itself. Their go-to menus items are seafood based. We had excellent service and never felt rushed.
It was very crowded and noisy on a Sunday for lunch, but we had a good time.
Brunch at Gertrude’s is as good as it gets. Love the food, service, and ambiance. A definite favorite!
I have visited this establishment on a few occasions and the food is consistently good and the location is great. Great for a girlfriend's outting or a cute couples date for those who enjoy the arts, since it's located within the museum.
Food was excellent . I loved the rockfish imperial. Our server, Liz, was awesome!
Loved the meal. Prompt service. One of the better restaurants associated with art museums in the country. I can see why business people would have lunch here too. You could sit inside or out. We enjoyed a pleasant table for two. A relaxing meal.
We enjoyed two great entrees from the daily specials and had a fantastic time sitting on the outdoor patio.
We had the cooperation of glorious weather and were seated at my request in the enclosed tent
In the sculpture garden. It was wonderful-they we’re quite busy but food and service were top-notch.
We had great service with a most attentive waiter, Timor. He refilled our coffee cups without our having to crane our necks and ask him to do so. It was great service without his hovering.
Gertrude's is our favorite restaurant; always excellent. We celebrated a birthday, anniversary, and Easter all at once. Mahi Mahi special was done in a special way; seafood Jambalaya was huge and delicious. And the crab cake of the day was super! (Bummer that they ran out of the Shepherd's pie croquettes for an app). The desserts were also spectacular, and we appreciated the benefit of all of our celebrations! Our server Xandra was new, and did her best to keep us happy and enjoy the evening. Thanks, John and staff for a wonderful celebration!
Very busy day. Unable to accommodate our reservation outside in a reasonable amount of time. We told the hostess we would eat inside if that was easier. We were seated inside. It is so loud in there, can hardly have a conversation at a 4 person table. My tofu scramble with veggies was very oily and did not come with the salsa that was advertised with the meal. The crab cake benedict was enjoyed by others. Loved the easter bonnet parade.
Our ninth year as a family of six — 15 to 96 — enjoying the great open-air ambience, brunch menu, hilarious hat parade, enjoyable musical duo, and overall best spot in the Baltimore area for brunch.
Dirty Gerty Bloody Mary, Tilghman Island Eggs Benedict and Marvelous Maryland Crab Soup! Perfect Day!
We enjoy Gertrude’s very much and visit with family on Special Occasions .
The crab cakes were awesome!
We had a terrific time. The service was very good, everyone’s meal was terrific. We had no complaints. Love that the menu has something for everyone especially the vegetarian crabcakes!
