George's Ocean Terrace Ratings and Reviews
Our overall experience was very poor. We had booked as we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and it had been recommended by a colleague. The restaurant was very quiet when we arrived but we had to sit and wait to be seated for 10 minutes Finally we were shown to a table and given menus from which we ordered a bottle of wine. We sat for the next 20minutes with no service, no water and no wine. We decided to leave and walked across the street to a cosy, friendly Italian restaurant, la dolce vita, that we would thoroughly recommend.
Super accommodating we changed our party size at the last minute and 2 of us were 45 minutes early and hey seated us without waiting for the rest of the party to arrive. Excellent as always. George’s is always on my list of places to eat when I visit San Diego.
We were here celebrating my birthday and it was a big disappointment. We had reservations at 3:15 to see the sunset and the staff was changing from lunch to dinner. They were cleaning up and made us feel like we were in the way/they were being inconvenienced by us being there. I was asked multiple times if we were celebrating anything but nothing was done to celebrate it. Overall, I'm not impressed and wouldn't recommend it.
So... Ive been here quite a bit over the years... lunch settinng on a nice day was awesome.. they ran 30 minutes behind on res time.. ordered lunch fish special.. usually love the food.. underwhelmed. not much flavor profile at all.... sticky toffee desert. cake was dry!! not a great visit this time.. Hopefully, not the new way it will be!!
George's always gets a crowd on a beautiful day, and Black Friday was no exception. We had a reservation, but it pays to specify that you want a table by the glass wall (best view) and if you want a table in the shade, specify that in your reservation too.
Our waitress did a great job, I ordered the hummus appetizer and asked for no peppers and extra olives, and man did I get extra olives. The grilled salmon added to either a salad or in this case an appetizer was fabulous. The burger good, nothing extra special. Apparently they no longer carry Bread et Cie bread, what a pity.
The view is the reason to be here, that and the bar, beer selections. Make your reservations and specify shade & a table on the glass, then bring sunscreen and enjoy!
You’re definitely paying for the view. Granted, the view is very nice, but they certainly charge you for it, as the food is nothing special. I had the grilled octopus, pork tacos and pumpkin mousse. The octopus was overcooked and frankly not very good. The tacos were tasty but it’s not hard to find good tacos in San Diego/La Jolla, and I had better on my trip. The pumpkin dessert was delicious and really the only course that stood out. The service was ok, but seemed to be mostly college kids on break. Overall, not a bad experience at all, but not as wonderful as everyone would have you believe. And not a great value for what you get.
An incredible experience every time we dine at George’s . The food is delicious, the view is breathtaking and the staff are excellent . Perfect place to bring out of towners or just to remind yourself why we live in San Diego.
The Chicken Broccoli black bean soup is a must!
Have visited George's many times over the years when visiting San Diego area. This visit was a little disappointing and seemed to have declined from a service perspective from previous visits. We had told the restaurant in reservation that it was a meal during our honeymoon.....and we reminded them of it when we arrived with best friends who were also on a delayed honeymoon (they got married earlier in year in England). There was no acknowledgement of the special occasion at all.
Two of us ordered the "famous" soup -- which has been a favorite over the years. On this visit the soup was served barely warm -- and was sent back......and it was extremely thick, almost stew-like. Not as we remembered it. We don't remember the waiter apologizing for the soup being cold -- he may have, but someone else brought back the new bowls of hotter soup. Entrees were all good. Dessert -- a new item, Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake, was decent, but quite dry -- and lacked the moistness and sauce of a traditional sticky toffee dessert.
I would probably go back to Georges and give them another shot -- the ambiance and views are hard to beat....... Hoping that some of the misses on this visit were anomalies during their remodeling projects.
You cannot beat the scenic views and ambience. It is wonderful to sit at the bar and enjoy the spectacular scenery. Tables along the wall on the ocean are in high demand. It took quite some time for our food to arrive. The filet mignon and the special short ribs were fantastic. We were comped on desserts due to the long wait for food, I believe.
The best service we had came from the young man going around making sure everybody had water. Our server rarely came around and we felt invisible to him. The menu didn’t have great choices and some parts of the meals actually tasted as if they came from a box. Probably won’t come back again.
We had company from England and Bali. In my research to find a restaurant in La Jolla with an ocean view that served excellent food, we selected George's Ocean Terrace. This being our first visit we looked forward to it being a special event. There were 5 adults and 3 children. The Child menu was good. I ordered Spaghetti with clams....lots of clams but the sauce was flat and cold. My husband ordered your burger.........he said it was ok but nothing special. Our adult guests ordered from the salad menu and said there's were very good. The wine was excellent. The service was very good. I would have second thoughts about returning.
