Excellent! Always excellent! The food is exquisite and interesting, beautifully presented. Staff is attentive and excellent. Chef superb and creative!
George’s California Modern is fantastic! Beautiful view of the La Jolla Cove. The decor is fun. But most importantly the food is absolutely fabulous! Local, farm to table freshness. All presented in a delicious gourmet fashion. Great wine list compliments the menu. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and can help with your selection. Their dessert menu is outstanding. They offer a decadent sweets selection or a savory cheese presentation. Or do like we did; and get both! Enjoy
Average and nothing special
Wonderful in every way!
I was asking around what the best restaurant for a tasting menu would be and I couldn't stop hearing about how great this place is. I didn't know what to expect being that this was my first tasting menu. It was a spectacular evening. All the courses are well thought out and meticulously put together! The care and respect that they have for the food is admirable. Thank you for the great food!
What a great night out at George’s. All of the service staff was wonderful to us, and even accommodated our special request a few hours before arrival. Thank you for a memorable night out with a delicious meal to enjoy!
George's California Modern did not meet our expectations for fine dining. The view at night was dominated by painted walls, and the food was unnecessarily overdone. While we enjoyed the wine pairing option, the prix fix dinner option (two starters, an entree, and a dessert) was too much rich food per person. We probably would have enjoyed our meals better had we selected one starter to share and an entree. The best part of the meal was actually the berry sorbet which is made on site.
Easter brunch, great time with family.
Just book your table and go! The most beautiful, fresh, original, delicious, detailed meal with "California-impeccable" service-- aka, friendly, casual, yet very attentive. Beautiful views.....just go.
The meals were overpriced for what was served. The Yellowtail was over cooked, the pork was like rubber and while the beef cheeks entree was very tender it was overly salty. We were upcharged for service but, while the servers were friendly, the service was spotty. The water glasses were not refilled but the wine service was attentive.
For the $, we were expecting a much better dining experience. The seafood congee was really over salted and fishy-tasting, and the steak tartare was made up of tough pieces of beef-more like corned-beef hash. Won't go back.
Hard to describe except to say - awesome from start to finish.
The food was impeccable, the view is gorgeous. We each did the four course meal. We’d definitely recommend the rigatoni for dinner and the donuts for dessert! Also, the beef tenderloin was amazing.
George’s is never disappointing, always highest quality in food and service. I believe you generally get what you pay for and have never had any reason to doubt that theory at George’s. I always go there for dinner on my first night in town.
Visited this restaurant while on a short vacation, very nice view with a table by the window, entrees did not seem very hot when brought to the table and fish entree I ordered appeared to need a little more time cooking. Pricey place.
The food was pricey, not too flavorful and many hot plates came cold. The cauliflower dish for $16...had a sprinkle of cauliflower and was cold and not good. The wine poor seemed to be focused on saving money vs giving a market poor. I saw one wine poor served which was worse than mine....maybe 2 ounces. I will not return
It was our first visit to La Jolla, so we wanted to dine with a view. George’s came up on several searches, including Open Table, so we booked. To our surprise, our reservation was in the fine dining room. The restaurant has a top deck, open with lovely umbrellas for casual dining, drinks, etc. Then a mid-level that appears to be a casual restaurant. And a lower level (still will a fantastic view) for fine dining....huge windows, carpeting, subdued setting. It was a pleasant surprise for us! We chose not to do the Chef’s tasting menu or wine pairing, but they offered that if that’s what you’re looking for. Surprisingly — for a restaurant overlooking the Pacific Ocean — there were only 2 fish entrees, and we ordered both of them. The presentation was a culinary masterpiece! Absolutely beautiful and creative! The portions of fish were minute, but various vegetables arranged on the plate filled in. We were both satisfied, but definitely had no extra food. Our server was extremely polished but not at all stuffy. He engaged in conversation and added to our experience. If I return to La Jolla, I would probably try the mid level at Georges, but definitely would plan for drinks on the top level.
Made a reservation here for a birthday, very accommodating process. The place was a little hidden being, first-timers but not too hard to find. It was quiet and not too busy when we went (Thurs. night dinner). The servers were all very polite and helpful, but not too overbearing. Had the 4-course with the Rohan Duck, very delicious. My friend had the beef tenderloin and it was also so tasty. Georges has a formidable wine list and creative cocktail options so I imagine it would be nice place for a drink with dessert. I will definitely be going back again, and recommend it to anyone who i looking to dine in La Jolla!
George's is always an exceptional dining experience. We went for my mother's 70th birthday and everything was top notch. The service was impeccable, the food was outstanding, and they went above and beyond for her birthday - bringing out a special dessert and a little extra treat at the end. We will definitely be back in the future for regular nights out as well as other special occasions!
I returned to dine at George's after a 6 year hiatus. Boy, I should have learned my lesson then. While the ambience and view are breathtaking and the food very high quality, the service was not. The staff were extremely slow and the frequency in which they checked on our table was poor. Our wine glasses were empty when our food arrived, despite having put in an order for a second bottle before the meal. Overall, a frustrating experience. I was extremely embarrassed to have brought my friends from out of town to this establishment.
We were disappointed not to be seated in main dining room, but food did not disappoint. Meal was excellent and front dining room was quiet.
Very attentive service. A pretty good deal for a fancy dinner with the 4 course $75 menu
Very disappointed in added charges to our bill. $4 for olives in a Martini. 3% surcharge to the entire bill for "cost increases."
Wonderful food. Loved every part of the tasting menu. Charming server. Only detected slightly because we needed help with wine choice but there really wasn’t advice available. Would advise restaurant to pay more attention to the restrooms at the end of the evening but a truly minor point for a wonderful evening
Highly recommend the ceviche appetizer. Great food. Great service. Great views during the day.
I have eaten here often years ago but after a couple of bad times since their expansion, i did not have good experiences. We decided to try this again at Modern after a very poor experience a few months earlier.(hoping for the best) Unfortunately it was an embarrassment. They brought me the wrong entree and when I questioned it, they tried to convince me it was a fish that it wasn't! I have never had such a "bait and switch" thing happen to me anywhere! Like I would be convinced I was eating opah when they brought me yellow tail! Since my date had her entree, they left the yellowtail to taste while they cooked the opah. When they brought the opah, they actually removed the yellowtail plate so that my date couldn't even taste it anyway! worse, the opah was totally raw and uncooked. And the side veggies were overcooked. I cannot believe the this stunt! So while my date completely finished I still waited on the third try! since they removed the yellowtail. When it finally came, it was the worst piece of fish I ever had, so tough like a pure fat piece, impossible to cut even with a knife. I couldn't eat it and the waiter couldn't cut it either, so they removed it. After one wrong entree (having tried to fake it to me) and two tries at opah, the waiter was so embarrassed. i felt bad for him because he was good. I asked for the chef to come out and explain things or even try to taste what he cooked, but he refused the request. The manager came over with face covered with handkerchief over his mouth because he was fighting a bad cold. I felt sorry for him too and again asked for chef to come out since he was sick, but the chef refused again. Why George would put up with this chef is beyond me. To add insult to injury, they only comped my entree. Any respectful place would have everything to make up for this disaster! of course I shouldn't have to pay for what i didn't get! So they didn't comp anything, just made my date wait for three tries.
We did the Chef's Tasting Menu with the beverage pairings. Very inventive and entertaining. And our waiter took the time to explain both the dishes and the wines, and the local origins of each. For instance, a trio of locally caught prawns came with a Spanish wine called an Albariño, which was grown in central California. A small piece of ribeye steak came with a red Tannat produced in Mendocino. Our only regret was not arriving early enough to see the sunset from our table. But we had a chance to watch the sun go down on the drive up the coast, and while looking for parking in La Jolla (which is not easy in that part of town).
The selections were very fresh fish, vegetables, fruits & meat. The ambiance was very good, even though tables are close together; volume was not a problem. The 4 course tasting menu is a lot of food, but worth the options. When in La Jolla, this is one place you must try!
we ordered the 8 course fixed price. the service was slow and food was delivered without dishes for everyone.
an unfortunate experience.
Flavors were underwhelming and there was a lack of creativity
Nice atmosphere, sound level good allow conversation in part due to an attentive adjustment of the music level during the dinner when busy, food good but not exceptional, seared foie gras slightly overcooked, mushroom lasagna ok, nothing brilliant, lacking finesse and taste, fish course slightly overcooked, meat on the tough side in the beef tartare, dessert good, overall like of finesse. Service attentive but keeping a nice distance, and not obsequious. We had a good dinner but not an excellent dinner.
Awesome great amazing
Good cocktails and food. Management slightly disorganized.
I was hesitant to post a review(it was going to be a negative one). I then was asked by OpenTable and thought that others' reviews help me, so I shall.
The ambiance was nice - that's about it though:(.
I go out very often and have been to many outstanding, high priced restaurants. Despite that the price was ($175 pp/$220 with wine pairing for Chief's tasting menu), the food or the service was not even close!
One of our starting dishes was mushroom lasagna. I asked if we could eliminate ricotta as I wasn't a fan, the waitress' answer was: "I'm sorry, it comes premade". REALLY?!? At a "luxe" restaurant it "comes pre-made"?!?
When it was served, it was very COLD! It was hard, and when cut, it crumbled. When the waitress was back (we had to ask every time for her as she seemed to be overwhelmed), I, giving a benefit of a doubt that maybe it was some sort of chief's "creative" dish, she said that it was supposed to be hot. So I offered for her to try and see that it wasn't even warm. She just apologized! I mean really?!? At a high-class restaurant you don't take it back and substitute with something else, or at least serve another - hot one as it was supposed to be (one expects it in any restaurant)?!?!
Second appetizer was Octopus. It was completely burned - hard and charcoaled (see picture).
The cauliflower appetizer was just 3-4 small pieces of raw cauliflower with some greens on top - no sauce, nothing special.
Entrees were just A ok: regular grilled Sea Bass and not so successfully seared Yellowfish. At the end of the day the star was the dessert: raspberry and quince sorbet - very refreshing. But hey, there is only so much you could do to a sorbet.
Lastly: on the table next to us there was bread. I thought maybe she just forgot, so I asked for some. When we got the bill, I see a charge described as 2X$2, total extra $4. I ask, and she says: that's for bread, per person! Seriously?!? Aren't you supposed to let customer know?? Set aside that it's just pity stuff...
Excellent Service, great ambiance, 3 course menu worth it, wonderful desserts to top it off.
Terrible service, worst table in the restaurant and the food was not good. Waiters were rude. I wouldn't recommend this place or open table reservations app to anyone.
Great food and presentation.
Since we arrived in San Diego from France my husband wanted to come here so I surprised him this Saturday.
The food was amazing, he told me no need to come back to Paris, I finally found a great restaurant here!
The service was really great, they ask us each time if we wanted to change the wine because with the wine pairing we had 2 French wines with was really thoughtful.
Thank you for this night!
One of the top three restaurants in San Diego. Respectful and knowledgeable servers, nice variety of menu items, tasty integration of Chino Farms produce, charming and recently updated atmosphere. Quality of the food preparation and taste/flavours ot the food offerings are outstanding.
We went for a birthday dinner. The food and service were both excellent.
