George's California Modern Ratings and Reviews
Nice atmosphere, sound level good allow conversation in part due to an attentive adjustment of the music level during the dinner when busy, food good but not exceptional, seared foie gras slightly overcooked, mushroom lasagna ok, nothing brilliant, lacking finesse and taste, fish course slightly overcooked, meat on the tough side in the beef tartare, dessert good, overall like of finesse. Service attentive but keeping a nice distance, and not obsequious. We had a good dinner but not an excellent dinner.
I was hesitant to post a review(it was going to be a negative one). I then was asked by OpenTable and thought that others' reviews help me, so I shall.
The ambiance was nice - that's about it though:(.
I go out very often and have been to many outstanding, high priced restaurants. Despite that the price was ($175 pp/$220 with wine pairing for Chief's tasting menu), the food or the service was not even close!
One of our starting dishes was mushroom lasagna. I asked if we could eliminate ricotta as I wasn't a fan, the waitress' answer was: "I'm sorry, it comes premade". REALLY?!? At a "luxe" restaurant it "comes pre-made"?!?
When it was served, it was very COLD! It was hard, and when cut, it crumbled. When the waitress was back (we had to ask every time for her as she seemed to be overwhelmed), I, giving a benefit of a doubt that maybe it was some sort of chief's "creative" dish, she said that it was supposed to be hot. So I offered for her to try and see that it wasn't even warm. She just apologized! I mean really?!? At a high-class restaurant you don't take it back and substitute with something else, or at least serve another - hot one as it was supposed to be (one expects it in any restaurant)?!?!
Second appetizer was Octopus. It was completely burned - hard and charcoaled (see picture).
The cauliflower appetizer was just 3-4 small pieces of raw cauliflower with some greens on top - no sauce, nothing special.
Entrees were just A ok: regular grilled Sea Bass and not so successfully seared Yellowfish. At the end of the day the star was the dessert: raspberry and quince sorbet - very refreshing. But hey, there is only so much you could do to a sorbet.
Lastly: on the table next to us there was bread. I thought maybe she just forgot, so I asked for some. When we got the bill, I see a charge described as 2X$2, total extra $4. I ask, and she says: that's for bread, per person! Seriously?!? Aren't you supposed to let customer know?? Set aside that it's just pity stuff...
Since we arrived in San Diego from France my husband wanted to come here so I surprised him this Saturday.
The food was amazing, he told me no need to come back to Paris, I finally found a great restaurant here!
The service was really great, they ask us each time if we wanted to change the wine because with the wine pairing we had 2 French wines with was really thoughtful.
Thank you for this night!
One of the top three restaurants in San Diego. Respectful and knowledgeable servers, nice variety of menu items, tasty integration of Chino Farms produce, charming and recently updated atmosphere. Quality of the food preparation and taste/flavours ot the food offerings are outstanding.
Came here for a chef’s tasting with my wife for her 30th birthday. She did the pairing and I elected to stick to cocktails. Overall the food was superb. Some dishes were very good, others were spectacular. My only hang-up was the portion size on a couple of dishes. Of course the ingredients were stellar so I understand that carry’s a burden but after 8 courses feeling the slightest bit hungry was a little bit of a downer. Overall, great experience, but maybe finding a way to finagle a few extra bites on some courses could make all the difference.
The relaxed atmosphere and the excellent food and service made for a wonderful evening to catch up with people we had not seen in 30 years. Our waiter never rushed us into ordering and this helped to make for a perfect evening. There was not one item that we ate that was not perfect! I would go back anytime I am in La Jolla.
Service was good and the food was good. However, my wife ordered a medium rare steak and it came out almost medium well. They brought a new steak in about 10 minutes but it spoiled the meal for both of us. I only picked at my food while i waited to eat with her by the time it came my food was barely warm by then. They handled it well in all regards, except I would have expected some offer of dessert at the very least or some other comp on that bill or a future visit from a place where the plates are ~$40+. That was surprising.
This is a spectacular place, a very pleasant surprise for any serious foodies out there. We did the full tasting menu and got terrific service from Sean, who was informative and professional. The feeling is a real intimacy with southern California food (like the unusual spiny Lobster). One of best restaurant experiences short of French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park.
We arrived about 10min.before our reservation and were told we’d have to wait. My husband declined to wait, and we were seated, but. there was no reason to have kept us waiting that we could see.
This was the only restaurant that offered us bread, but for an extra charge.
The food was ok.
Every aspect of our dinner experience was fantastic! The food was creative and delicious. Our waiter was attentive without being annoying. The food prices are actually really good for what you get. Make no mistake, you will probably average $100 per person or more but you are going to get a fantastic dining experience.
We go to fine dining places in Europe quite a bit and have very high standards. The quality of ingredients were high, everything was well prepared and the outlooks of the portions were beautiful. However, the first mentioned considered the food portions were on the big side for us, the both of us (despite us doing sports every day) had difficulties finishing four courses, I really had to stuff the entree in after the starters. The food was Great, but not outstanding, which one expects for the money spent. The wine pairings were unordinary, great wine although very unexpected selections by the wine manager. We were offered the opportunity to change the pairings, but just decided to stick with the interesting selections offered to us. Nevertheless, we were extremely happy with the great service and the ambiance, had lovely time and the most memorable Christmas Eve dinner at the George's California Modern.
This fine dining experience never fails to delight. The menu regularly changes with the availability of fresh ingredients, and presentations continue to be worthy of a photograph in Bon Appetit. Service remains a big plus; our waiter had been with the restaurant for 20 years, and that says all one needs to know about the quality of this establishment. All things considered, this remains the best dining experience in greater San Diego.
George's was a great choice for our 44th anniversary. We chose an early reservation to allow walk around time at the cove. We wanted window seat for view, but there was no view, unless you like looking at the side of a building. It was already dark, and no sea view! Live/learn!
The service and food was amazing but that’s to be expected when dinning at an expensive restaurant, we were quite perturbed with the fact that management showed a lack of respect for patrons by allowing a large party in the main dinning room to ruin the dinning experience for everyone sat around them. Large parties, especially with young misbehaving children should not be sat in the main dinning room especially if they are going to FaceTime and pass the phone around the table for the entire dinning room to hear every word.
