George's California Modern Ratings and Reviews
The relaxed atmosphere and the excellent food and service made for a wonderful evening to catch up with people we had not seen in 30 years. Our waiter never rushed us into ordering and this helped to make for a perfect evening. There was not one item that we ate that was not perfect! I would go back anytime I am in La Jolla.
Service was good and the food was good. However, my wife ordered a medium rare steak and it came out almost medium well. They brought a new steak in about 10 minutes but it spoiled the meal for both of us. I only picked at my food while i waited to eat with her by the time it came my food was barely warm by then. They handled it well in all regards, except I would have expected some offer of dessert at the very least or some other comp on that bill or a future visit from a place where the plates are ~$40+. That was surprising.
This is a spectacular place, a very pleasant surprise for any serious foodies out there. We did the full tasting menu and got terrific service from Sean, who was informative and professional. The feeling is a real intimacy with southern California food (like the unusual spiny Lobster). One of best restaurant experiences short of French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park.
We arrived about 10min.before our reservation and were told we’d have to wait. My husband declined to wait, and we were seated, but. there was no reason to have kept us waiting that we could see.
This was the only restaurant that offered us bread, but for an extra charge.
The food was ok.
Every aspect of our dinner experience was fantastic! The food was creative and delicious. Our waiter was attentive without being annoying. The food prices are actually really good for what you get. Make no mistake, you will probably average $100 per person or more but you are going to get a fantastic dining experience.
We go to fine dining places in Europe quite a bit and have very high standards. The quality of ingredients were high, everything was well prepared and the outlooks of the portions were beautiful. However, the first mentioned considered the food portions were on the big side for us, the both of us (despite us doing sports every day) had difficulties finishing four courses, I really had to stuff the entree in after the starters. The food was Great, but not outstanding, which one expects for the money spent. The wine pairings were unordinary, great wine although very unexpected selections by the wine manager. We were offered the opportunity to change the pairings, but just decided to stick with the interesting selections offered to us. Nevertheless, we were extremely happy with the great service and the ambiance, had lovely time and the most memorable Christmas Eve dinner at the George's California Modern.
This fine dining experience never fails to delight. The menu regularly changes with the availability of fresh ingredients, and presentations continue to be worthy of a photograph in Bon Appetit. Service remains a big plus; our waiter had been with the restaurant for 20 years, and that says all one needs to know about the quality of this establishment. All things considered, this remains the best dining experience in greater San Diego.
George's was a great choice for our 44th anniversary. We chose an early reservation to allow walk around time at the cove. We wanted window seat for view, but there was no view, unless you like looking at the side of a building. It was already dark, and no sea view! Live/learn!
The service and food was amazing but that’s to be expected when dinning at an expensive restaurant, we were quite perturbed with the fact that management showed a lack of respect for patrons by allowing a large party in the main dinning room to ruin the dinning experience for everyone sat around them. Large parties, especially with young misbehaving children should not be sat in the main dinning room especially if they are going to FaceTime and pass the phone around the table for the entire dinning room to hear every word.
From the moment we arrived, the experience was delightful. The staff are all warm, engaging, and wonderfully competent. The menu was a bit challenging because there were many unusual choices, but we all LOVED our four different meals. The food was really spectacular. We also had a great window table (though we couldn’t see anything of the magnificent daytime view). We were entertaining friends from the East coast, and they were truly impressed. Thanks for a fabulous evening.
A La Jolla institution, maybe past its prime. Overall we were not impressed by this place, The first starter was a crudo fish dish. It was not well balanced. The saltiness overwhelmed the sweet and the sour and the sliced jalapenos made the whole dish seem a bit like a cheap ceviche. Very underwhelming. The second starter was the pork, recommended as a house favorite. The deep fried tube was not at all what I expected. It reminded me of a batter coated souvlaki with some greens thrown on top. Sorry, but this did not work for me at all. The main was beef cheeks which were excellent. This was the only course I thought worthy of this price point. For desert I had one of the cheeses which was mediocre. We chose to get the wine pairing with the meal for $40 per person. We should have ordered a couple $40 bottles as the pairings were not especially inspired and the pours were minuscule. Overall, I can't say I would recommend Georges. It was OK, but not great. For $160 each, you can do much better.
I chose George's California Modern because my husband was celebrating his 70th birthday, and the reviews I'd read led me to believe our dinner would be spectacular. Our dinner was good, but not great, compared to other restaurants in the area. We had to pay extra for bread, which seemed a bit miserly. We started with the poached pear salad, which was tiny but priced at $17. My pear was hard and had to be cut with a knife and fork because it had not been cooked long enough. Our entrees were striped bass, which we both thought was excellent. I ordered dessert (chocolate tarte), which was good, but not fabulous. We were disappointed by the ambiance; I remember the old George's at the Cove. The new version seemed rather tacky with flocked chairs and very little in the way of decoration, and the view was marred by the private residence blocking the coast. Altogether, we were underwhelmed. We won't go there again any time soon.
4 course menu. Highlights: The fish tacos are a signature dish and sublime. The yellowtail crudo was wonderful and a great balance of heat and cool. The duck was cooked perfectly, with crispy skin and moist breast meat. Service was attentive without being fussy. The view! Especially before sunset! Things that could have been just a scooch better: There were people in sport coats and dresses and others in shorts. At this price point, is it really rude to have a dress code? The dipping sauces for the dreamy and wonderful doughnuts - only the marshmallow one was memorable--in a good way. The "cherry" one was applesauce, the chocolate one was bitter. Things that MUST improve: The dining room chairs are not comfortable enough for a 2.5 hour meal!
This is the first time we have dined at George's California Modern. We have usually stayed away as we thought it was very "touristy" but we received a gift card from an out of town friend. To start we had the octopus which was soggy (soft) and not good. For the main course, I ordered the yellowtail and my wife ordered the seabass. Both were very fishy tasting and the sauces were overbearing. We were not able to finish the dishes as they were so bad. The waiter was asked if our dinner was good and we were honest with feedback. He offered to bring new entrees but at this point we were not willing to endure another try. He offered us a desert to make up for our dissatisfaction. We ordered the chocolate cake and it was very average and we did not finish (rare for us not to finish a desert!). I cannot recommend George's at all. There are much better seafood restaurants in La Jolla. Now what to do with the gift card with that has a balance?
