From the moment we arrived, the experience was delightful. The staff are all warm, engaging, and wonderfully competent. The menu was a bit challenging because there were many unusual choices, but we all LOVED our four different meals. The food was really spectacular. We also had a great window table (though we couldn’t see anything of the magnificent daytime view). We were entertaining friends from the East coast, and they were truly impressed. Thanks for a fabulous evening.

A La Jolla institution, maybe past its prime. Overall we were not impressed by this place, The first starter was a crudo fish dish. It was not well balanced. The saltiness overwhelmed the sweet and the sour and the sliced jalapenos made the whole dish seem a bit like a cheap ceviche. Very underwhelming. The second starter was the pork, recommended as a house favorite. The deep fried tube was not at all what I expected. It reminded me of a batter coated souvlaki with some greens thrown on top. Sorry, but this did not work for me at all. The main was beef cheeks which were excellent. This was the only course I thought worthy of this price point. For desert I had one of the cheeses which was mediocre. We chose to get the wine pairing with the meal for $40 per person. We should have ordered a couple $40 bottles as the pairings were not especially inspired and the pours were minuscule. Overall, I can't say I would recommend Georges. It was OK, but not great. For $160 each, you can do much better.

Fabulous food and excellent service. The wine pairing we had with our Four course dinner was excellent as well. We will come back to George's again the next time we are in La Jolla.

I chose George's California Modern because my husband was celebrating his 70th birthday, and the reviews I'd read led me to believe our dinner would be spectacular. Our dinner was good, but not great, compared to other restaurants in the area. We had to pay extra for bread, which seemed a bit miserly. We started with the poached pear salad, which was tiny but priced at $17. My pear was hard and had to be cut with a knife and fork because it had not been cooked long enough. Our entrees were striped bass, which we both thought was excellent. I ordered dessert (chocolate tarte), which was good, but not fabulous. We were disappointed by the ambiance; I remember the old George's at the Cove. The new version seemed rather tacky with flocked chairs and very little in the way of decoration, and the view was marred by the private residence blocking the coast. Altogether, we were underwhelmed. We won't go there again any time soon.

4 course menu. Highlights: The fish tacos are a signature dish and sublime. The yellowtail crudo was wonderful and a great balance of heat and cool. The duck was cooked perfectly, with crispy skin and moist breast meat. Service was attentive without being fussy. The view! Especially before sunset! Things that could have been just a scooch better: There were people in sport coats and dresses and others in shorts. At this price point, is it really rude to have a dress code? The dipping sauces for the dreamy and wonderful doughnuts - only the marshmallow one was memorable--in a good way. The "cherry" one was applesauce, the chocolate one was bitter. Things that MUST improve: The dining room chairs are not comfortable enough for a 2.5 hour meal!

This is the first time we have dined at George's California Modern. We have usually stayed away as we thought it was very "touristy" but we received a gift card from an out of town friend. To start we had the octopus which was soggy (soft) and not good. For the main course, I ordered the yellowtail and my wife ordered the seabass. Both were very fishy tasting and the sauces were overbearing. We were not able to finish the dishes as they were so bad. The waiter was asked if our dinner was good and we were honest with feedback. He offered to bring new entrees but at this point we were not willing to endure another try. He offered us a desert to make up for our dissatisfaction. We ordered the chocolate cake and it was very average and we did not finish (rare for us not to finish a desert!). I cannot recommend George's at all. There are much better seafood restaurants in La Jolla. Now what to do with the gift card with that has a balance?

Food was excellent. The only improvement I would say is I ordered a rare steak and the sever never came to ask if my steak was prepared perfectly.. because it was as actually med/medium rare. Still good, but I prefer rare.
Portions are just right. The hardest part when coming here is deciding which level you want to go to because all menu options are different; even beverage and they won’t accomodate to order off the other menu. All great options, but if your going with a group just make sure to agree on which level you want to dine at so that everyone in the group is happy.

We were a party of 4 dining on the last Sunday of restaurant week. We dine out often and chose George's California Modern because none of us have dined there, we all enjoy having lunch upstairs at the Terrace and the high rating of the restaurant. We were disappointed to various degrees. The view and bread from Praeger Bros were the best. We brought a great bottle of Hartford 2008 Pinot which was great. The food overall is good to very good. The service was friendly, warm but inattentive. There is a wait of 20 plus minutes between courses which was filled by great conversation but considered slow by most standards. Water was not filled regularly. Overall experience
was a bit above average.

Great service! Appetiser: Snapper crudo was great but spicier than expected. The butter nut squash was also great. Entrees: The stripped bass was a little overcooked and could have used a starch while the rigatoni was perfect. The added poached eggs was the most flavourless yolk I've tasted. Dessert: The chocolate tart desert was perfect while the ice cream/ oatcrust was terrible because the crust had high salt bites and the ice cream/chocolate mix was very sweet.

It's always a pleasure to go back to our favorite restaurant in the San Diego area. This time it was my husband's birthday, but we go anytime we need a "fix" of wonderful food. The dishes are creative, attractive and comprised of amazing combinations of flavors and textures, often using local ingredients. The service is attentive and friendly without overdoing it.
The wine list is a bit pricey but has a great selection and the wait staff is very good at making suggestions for wines or cocktails.
An added bonus here is the view of the ocean and the chance to see a wonderful sunset.

Excellent food, beautifully presented and delicious. But, I found a piece of porcelain in my food and the meal was replaced, though I was NOT given credit for my meal. I was given s free dessert, but the meal cost should have been removed. I was kind and private about the issue, but I had already bitten into the piece of porcelain. It could have been a much bigger issue, but I just accepted the bill. I will not go back. I do not think sincere personal care is important there.

Beautiful spot, great food, wait staff was very attentive. The only thing is it takes a long time for food to get to your table. Maybe that' part of it, to create the experience, but we were there for over 2 hours. I'm glad we were having a good time, but not a restaurant to go for a short meal. Other than that, it was amazing. Will go back again!

I had visited George's several times before but always dined on level three--the casual upstairs, outdoor area. This time that area was fully booked so I booked in George's California Modern on the bottom floor. The first-floor area is a more upscale dining experience. The food was wonderful (I had the Jidori chicken) and our server was attentive and friendly. I will return again.

Our server, William, was relaxed, friendly, attentive but not intrusive. Unlike so many servers these days, he did not talk at us, but with us. He did not drone through dish descriptions like a high school student taking an oral exam. The meal was excellent. And when William waived our corkage fee as an anniversary gift to us, it was a nice move, and appreciated. American restaurants of all levels can be so impersonal, distant, detached. It was good to have an attentive server who wanted to add to our enjoyable evening, not just maximize the profit generated by the table we occupied.

We've been going to Georges for many, many years. Food and service are always good, especially for San Diego. But. They are now charging $2.00 a person for bread. REALLY?? Yes, their bread is good. Super good. But at a high end establishment such as Georges, it seems petty. I hope someone from there pays attention to reviews and knocks it off post haste. Build it into the cost of the meal if necessary, but don't nickel and dime your patrons. Geesh.

Despite being on time for our reservation and despite the restaurant being almost empty we were kept waiting more than 10 minutes for our table.

Our waiter was excellent but the service was very, very slow, presumably because of the painfully long time it took for the kitchen to prepare the courses.

This was a great dining experience and a wonderful choice to celebrate our 35th anniversary. We (there were three of us) each got the four course tasting menu. There were many options to choose from in each course. The food was universally delicious, creative and beautifully presented. The mixed drinks were a bit unusual and excellent and we liked the wines that were suggested to pair with our dishes. We appreciated that we could hear each other talk (a rarity these days) and like the simplicity of the dining room decor. The waitstaff were helpful and attentive but not imposing. I highly recommend this restaurant and hope to return on a future visit to San Diego.

George's California Modern has been consistently good for a long time. This time I felt the service level had declined (both reservation services and dining service) from previous high standards, but the food was still good. I had the beef cheeks and was very happy with them.

The view in the dining room (California Modern) is not as good as the Ocean Terrace view.

For my 75th birthday, we decided to take a friend and family to George's Modern for dinner. We had a perfectly adequate meal in a lovely setting but, with three cocktails and several $75 tasting menus, the check with tip was about $500. Not a value at all. The food was fine, but, really, didn't seem very special (and this from people who eat out often.) The desserts were esp "meh." We enjoyed each other and our evening but all of us left feeling disappointed in the food. The service was, as well, adequate but not outstanding. For that price, I can't recommend it.

I have eaten on the top two levels many times and they are enjoyable and a value. Sad to say, not this.
