3% service charge for help was ridiculous. Food unique but nothing I’d go back for. Seating with pillows trendy but not comfortable. Won’t go back.
Amazing food! Beautiful view of sunset. The staff recommendations were spot on!
Although pricey, the food was awesome! Our party had the rigatoni, beef tenderloin, and dry aged ribeye, and all were great. Perfectly cooked to order. Only concern on Service was that our server did not seem well versed in explaining the menu items beyond stating that they are very good!
Our Server, Joseph was attentive and helpful. He was gracious each time he presented a course. We had the three course meal. My mom had a delicious asparagus salad while had awesome corn and scallop fritters prepared perfectly. The entrees were salmon with mushroom risotto and rib hash. They were both delectable and magazine worthy. Dessert course was carrot cake and oat crumble with oat ice cream and coffee whip. The whole meal was truly worth every bite. This restaurant did a stellar job with their Mother’s day brunch!
This reservation was for the Mother's Day brunch. The food was awesome and service was excellent. However George's charged a $10 per person premium for the ocean side dining. Had we been seated at the window, that would have been a fair up charge. However, we were seated in the back bench booth area having to look thru two rows of other diners and half of our party facing the wall. The up charge for our seating was not worth it.
Server dropped knife on my sisters shoulder; thankfully she was wearing a sweater. Other than that, service was good.
We went there for Mother's Day and were very impressed with the food and the view. Great restaurant!
The food is excellent. I have never been disappointed with the food in this restaurant and I am difficult to please. Thank you for the great food and excellent service.
Excellent food and service - it was our first time to California Modern - we all loved it and will be back.
Just love George's. One of the top Restaurants in Socal.
Celebrated Mother’s Day early. The food was excellent but the table was way to hot and sunny without any shade. My table and many around us had people eating in sunglasses.
Great food and service. It’s a higher priced place , so I expected a great evening.
The Muzak was loud (and tacky). I asked the waitress to turn it down a bit but she did not. It detracted from the view and otherwise nice atmosphere. Also, I was irritated by how many times I was asked to confirm the reservation (3 times, even after providing a credit card to make the reservation).
Fabulous! Service and food was perfect.
This place is trying to be super trendy, but it's really just a hodgepodge of neon furniture with mediocre overpriced food and true religion wearing diners...
What a fantastic meal and service. The restaurant lives up to its reputation. The food was absolutely magnificent! Every bite carries layers of flavor perfection. Service was impeccable. We had an amazing view. The ambience was perfect for a date night.
Took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner during sunset. Even though we couldn’t get a table at the window (they don’t reserve them special), we were still able to watch the sun set from our table. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. We’re not the “snooty” type when we dine and our server picked up on that, engaging us in pleasant personal conversation. They even left a “Happy Birthday” note on the table for her.
Literally the best food I’ve had in San Diego. Every dish and drink was perfection.
I have celiac disease and requested a strict gluten free menu. The servers pointed out the desserts I could not have and made sure I knew the other dishes were gluten-free. It was the first non-stressful dining experience I’ve had since my diagnosis.
On top of the excellent service the food was amazing. The warm chocolate tart was delicious.
I plan to come back here for as many special occasions as I can.
Excelente servicio de hostess, capitán y meseros
The Chef’s Tasting Menu was divine; the view was heavenly and the service was outstanding.
Terrific multi-course tasting menu with wine pairings. Every dish was delicious and the plating was imaginative. The wine pairing was a very nice mix of varietals.
Really good overall - dinner and wine service didn’t quite stay in sync - so that was a little disappointing because it was related to our waiter and another waiter chatting.
All things considered delicious experience- just expected a 5 star experience across the board.
Our friends loved the experience. Thank you.
Deliciously decadent menu leaving with nothing but wanting more.
Excellent! Always excellent! The food is exquisite and interesting, beautifully presented. Staff is attentive and excellent. Chef superb and creative!
Everything was great. Just bummed we didn’t get a window view when making our reservation ahead of time when there didn’t seem to be a problem with making a reservation since most times were open. I even put down that we’d wait for a window seat. You could barely see the view from the restaurant in our seats which we were bummed about. Other than that the food and service was great.
George’s California Modern is fantastic! Beautiful view of the La Jolla Cove. The decor is fun. But most importantly the food is absolutely fabulous! Local, farm to table freshness. All presented in a delicious gourmet fashion. Great wine list compliments the menu. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and can help with your selection. Their dessert menu is outstanding. They offer a decadent sweets selection or a savory cheese presentation. Or do like we did; and get both! Enjoy
Average and nothing special
Wonderful in every way!
I have been coming to George's and affiliated restaurants for three decades, whenever in San Diego for business or pleasure. This was the most disappointing experience that we've ever had.
*Drop-dead gorgeous view of the Pacific. Almost makes up for the shortcomings in the food and wine.
*The “fish tacos” were a highlight of our dinner. It was essentially a deconstructed taco with yellowfin tuna, California avocado, and corn nuts.
* The food generally was otherwise disappointingly forgettable. The pot pie was bizarre. Main dishes lacked flavor, and desserts over-promised and under-delivered.
*They charge for bread. Ridiculous for a restaurant trying to be one of the elite in the area and state. Regardless, they didn't even bother asking us whether we wanted it, even though other tables were offered it.
*Horrible wine pairings by the glass for the prix fixe menu. Especially disappointing, given that there were decent wine selections by the bottle.
*The restrooms are a major journey up several flights of stairs and through a rowdy bar.
*The only thing worse than having a mediocre meal at a so-called fine-dining establishing is having to pay a lot for it- and you will, so beware...
I was asking around what the best restaurant for a tasting menu would be and I couldn't stop hearing about how great this place is. I didn't know what to expect being that this was my first tasting menu. It was a spectacular evening. All the courses are well thought out and meticulously put together! The care and respect that they have for the food is admirable. Thank you for the great food!
What a great night out at George’s. All of the service staff was wonderful to us, and even accommodated our special request a few hours before arrival. Thank you for a memorable night out with a delicious meal to enjoy!
George's California Modern did not meet our expectations for fine dining. The view at night was dominated by painted walls, and the food was unnecessarily overdone. While we enjoyed the wine pairing option, the prix fix dinner option (two starters, an entree, and a dessert) was too much rich food per person. We probably would have enjoyed our meals better had we selected one starter to share and an entree. The best part of the meal was actually the berry sorbet which is made on site.
Easter brunch, great time with family.
Just book your table and go! The most beautiful, fresh, original, delicious, detailed meal with "California-impeccable" service-- aka, friendly, casual, yet very attentive. Beautiful views.....just go.
The meals were overpriced for what was served. The Yellowtail was over cooked, the pork was like rubber and while the beef cheeks entree was very tender it was overly salty. We were upcharged for service but, while the servers were friendly, the service was spotty. The water glasses were not refilled but the wine service was attentive.
For the $, we were expecting a much better dining experience. The seafood congee was really over salted and fishy-tasting, and the steak tartare was made up of tough pieces of beef-more like corned-beef hash. Won't go back.
Hard to describe except to say - awesome from start to finish.
The food was impeccable, the view is gorgeous. We each did the four course meal. We’d definitely recommend the rigatoni for dinner and the donuts for dessert! Also, the beef tenderloin was amazing.
George’s is never disappointing, always highest quality in food and service. I believe you generally get what you pay for and have never had any reason to doubt that theory at George’s. I always go there for dinner on my first night in town.
Visited this restaurant while on a short vacation, very nice view with a table by the window, entrees did not seem very hot when brought to the table and fish entree I ordered appeared to need a little more time cooking. Pricey place.
