Gente Ratings and Reviews
My wife called it an Irish Pub masquerading as an Italian restaurant. Food was very good, a little pricey. Not a lot of beer options, but I was just happy to get a second beer because the waiter was so busy. So a lot of people go, but it’s not the quiet romantic place we were looking for. Everyone was really nice though.
Gente is an adequate Italian restaurant, fairly close to Grand Central Terminal. We went somewhat late which might explain why it was so empty.
The positives were:
quiet - easy to converse
The negatives were:
food was indeed decent but quite unexciting
much too expensive for what we ordered or what it was worth.
Gente is still a favorite after 15 years of reliably great Italian food and impeccable service. Thanks, Eddie, for making another wonderful memory for my 90-year-old mom! She hadn't been to Gente since we had her 80th birthday party there--an event for the ages!!!
My wife and I brought my mother to NYC because she had never traveled there. Gente was down the street from our hotel, so it was very convenient. We had a 5:30 reservation. It was not very busy, so it was relatively quiet. For our meal we had the carpaccio, lasagne, veal Milanese with a side of pasta, a chocolate soufflé and a crème brulee. All of the food was quite good, and the staff was very attentive. It made for an enjoyable meal prior to departing the following day.
Gente is always consistent. Lovely and helpful servers, and a strong menu that includes light and more substantive choices. I usually get the delicious shrimp salad, but this time I had the chicken marsala with vegetables--perfectly cooked. Consistency of the sauce was excellent and tons of mushrooms, which I enjoy. My colleague had a hearty plate of lasagna and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Gente is a great local restaurant--casual and laid back. The noise level can be high, so be prepared, but between the selections and good food, I keep going back year after year.
We had a nice lunch, nothing super special. I was expecting a slightly more upscale-looking dining room from the photos so was a little bit disappointed walking in. The food was good, service attentive, but again, nothing out of the ordinary for a NY lunch restaurant. The noise level was extremely high.
The food, staff and ambiance were fine, but there was no flexibility in the menu. My sister wanted pesto on her pasta, but it was not available. She was finally offered olive oil and garlic instead of the red sauce. The only pasta they had was penne or spaghetti. It was not the NY Italian dining experience we wanted to have.
Although the food was good, it was overpriced. My husband ordered the lamb shank, which was more fat than meat. Ambience was nice. The service, however, had much to be desired. The management started to turn the lights on & off at 10:00pm on a Sat. night in an effort to get us to leave. They shut off the lights in the hallway where the bathrooms were located, so that we could not see, making it unsafe. We have never been treated so rudely in a restaurant. I will definitely not return.
I took my boyfriend to Gente for his birthday dinner, as he wanted Italian. We had never been before, and were pleasantly surprised.
The service was excellent, and though the portions were small for the price, the food was delicious! I had the shrimp and asparagus risotto, which was superb.
He had an outstanding cheesecake for dessert, and I had the Limoncello gelato, which rocked my world. He was very happy with his meal.
Overall, I definitely recommend Gente!
I had a great time with my wife having dinner at gente. The food, service and over all was great. The portions were perfect but if i was to have anything say was the price. I know is the city but the total was a bit high . I do recommend it to my family and friends .
I would not recommend this restaurant for the simple reason that the waiter tried to rip us off. He had added 22% gratuity to a check for two people, and when I told him I would be leaving cash for the tip he said OK knowing that he had already put 22% gratuity on the check. I asked to take another look at the check and that's when he realize I had caught him trying to get 22% on the total on top of the fact that I would be leaving a tip also. Be very careful the waiter's name was Eddie
