It was our first time there. had nice reviews so we thought we'd try it out for my wife's birthday. A Friday night at 5:15 pm. It was empty. We were the only ones there. We figured, ok, they just opened so more people will come soon. One other couple (regulars) came in after us and left before us. Otherwise . . . no one else! This isn't bad . . . it was just weird. HOWEVER, the food was excellent! the gentlemen who was the only person there was very nice and provided wonderful service. The restaurant is beautiful. He had beautiful classical music playing. but other than that one couple who came and went . . no one else. We laughed and thought it funny that we had the place all to ourselves. We are looking forward to going back later in the evening some day to hear the live music and to see what it's like when there are other people there. Bottom line - I recommend it.
I can honestly say we laughed a lot. We were one of the only diners there (there were 6 of us). Service was super slow. The restaurant smelled bad and we would have left but we were tired and hungry. The water we were served had things floating in it... like large chucks of things, so we got bottled water. The food was actually really, really good. So you have to overlook the smell, the nasty water, the slow service and the complete lack of ambiance to enjoy the food. We did laugh a lot, but I would never return.
We visited this restaurant four or five years ago. While the actual dinner was good, we felt uncomfortable in being the only patrons in the lovely dining room. We felt like we shouldn't linger over dinner because we were the only reason the staff couldn't leave.
We hoped that in our more recent visit others would have discovered this restaurant - but alas it was not to be. For most of the time ours was the only occupied table. The decor is lovely, the menu interesting, the quality of the food is fine and the service quite good. But the lack of "life" in a beautiful dining room, because it is so empty, is an issue for me.
I hope others discover this place soon. It deserves to succeed.
We ordered fried calamary for appetizer and it was bad. Sevice was so beyond bad.
Before I talk about the negatives, I always like to highlight the positives... the restaurant was cute, cozy and inviting. My husband and I were really looking forward to tasting the items on the menu according to what is published online, however, it being Valentine's Day we were unaware that they had a preset menu which was highly disappointing considering the limited amount of choices. As a restaurant though, if you choose only a limited amount of items, they should be pretty wonderful, as your kitchen only has to focus on a smaller selection. So, let's begin at the drinks... We really enjoy our red wine and were looking forward to enjoying a nice bottle that night. According to other reviewers, Gennaros was supposed to have a great selection; not true. There were 4 selections of Cabernet Sauvignon listed, the best bottle being $40. For a 4 star restaurant, a $40 bottle of Cab is highly disappointing. Also, we are big Italian "foodies " so the appetizer selection (fried calamari and smoked salmon) was not what we were looking forward to but we did try both appetizers. The smoked salmon with capers and creme fresh was good, but the calamari was very untraditional (cut into large, onion ring like shapes) and was just okay. For entrees, we ordered 2 different veal dishes (osso bucco, and the broiled sliced veal ) and they were mediocre at best. The whole front of house staff in the restaurant was only 1 server, 1 busser, 1 hostess/water refill person for a restaurant with 20ish tables. I will give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe they had an "off" day/night but we were very disappointed to say the least; considering we drove 40 miles to enjoy dinner there.
It was a lunch date. We were seated immediately, the location of the restaurant is great. The bar looks great.
A very nice, intimate dining experience in a neighborhood where there are not a lot of choices.
Osso buco salty.
Salmon looked good.
Calamari rings seemed from "package".
Asparagus and mushroom appetizer good.
Slow service with small dining room manned by one person but not crowded. We were second party seated and waited a good ten minutes then tried catching single server's attention. Noticed third party, arriving five minutes after us, was seated and already giving order to single server, maybe because they ordered a bottle of wine and we did not.
Quiet with live piano music
Unfortunately, I must say that Gennaro's Ristorante was truly one of the worst food experiences we have had in over 20 years of dining in Los Angeles. We are "easy" customers, but out of the four of us at the table, not ONE of us had a meal that was remotely edible in any fashion. We're talking caesar salad that was basically a bowl of cut lettuce swimming in a vinegar "dressing" that was horrible.....a salmon that was presented, yet again -- swimming -- in a garlic / butter sauce that was dreadful, and two other meals that were LOADED with so much salt one could simply not eat it. This was not a case of one of us selecting the wrong thing to order --- all four orders were extremely bad. So sorry -- but please be sure to pass on this restaurant.
We had a New Years Eve dinner. We were from out of town. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was old fashioned Italian. Very charming. We would go back again.
We were so disappointed. After reading some reviews we booked this restaurant for dinner for New Year's Eve. The restaurant is cute and the musician playing was great. We were seated right away. It was 15 minutes before someone came and took out drink order, but it was busy and the waiter apologized for the wait so no big deal. However, after 45 minutes our food order hadn't been taken and several tables in our section who arrived after us received much more attentive service and had ordered. We ended up leaving money for the drinks on the table and going somewhere else.
I can't speak to how the food was, but the service was probably the worst of any place I've ever been.
Gennaro's was great; nice ambience, delicious food, excellent service.
I have no complaints whatsoever about Gennaro's but I do have a major complaint about Open Table. I initially made the reservation via Open Table and I tried for a 6:00 pm but your service indicated that they were fully booked for 6:00 so I made the reservation for 5:00. The next day I called Gennaro's and they said no problem with 6:00. I told the owner that Open Table was doing him more harm than good. I won't use Open Table again.
This is a very quiet place which serves some of the best Italian fare I have ever experienced. The Caesar's Salad is a must - they serve it table-side in the traditional manner, which includes the coddled egg! The menu is extensive and they always have a tempting daily special menu.
If you're looking for some place that is romantic and classy, this is the place to go!
The server didn't speak English and customer service was horrible. There was no one to greet us and it appeared it wasn't even open because it was dark and quiet.
Quiet restaurant that services good food. We were in town on vacation and decided to try this small restaurant located close to our hotel. Glad we did. My husband and I split a Ceasar salad prepared tableside, the sea scallops sautéed with saffron and tossed with tagliolini in a spicy tomato sauce and the filet mignon with a mixed peppercorn sauce. The salad was adequate, nothing special, but the main courses were flavorful. Our favorite dishes of the evening were the desserts. The homemade tiramisu was a special treat, as was the spumoni.
Nice, cozy atmosphere with live music on the week end. Felt that the prices were a little high, but the food was good and service was attentive.
I haven't eaten in Gennaro's in a long time. Surprised to find out that there were only four tables occupied on a Friday night at 7:30. The food is cooked to perfection and they have all the usual Italian standards (I had carpaccio and osso bucco) and some new items also like blackend salmon.
There was a guitar player strumming the blues. Very good but it did interfere somewhat with the conversation. Service was excellent and we weren't charge corkage on the two bottles that we brought. A little expensive but definitely worth the cost. I would go here again, but am worried that it might need more business to stay open.
The food and service was very good. We had a 7 PM reservation and there were only two other tables occupied. A couple more came during our 1 1/2 hour visit. I personally prefer a more lively restaurant. A musician was playing the guitar and singing. Very, very good background music. I do not understand why this restaurant is not better visited.
We had an enjoyable meal. Caesar prepared table side was a treat. Ossobuco was a hearty dish and lobster ravioli very tasty. Food is authentic Italian, a liike bit heartier style than some of the Northern Italian fare around these days, but it's tasty and makes for a wonderful
Meal. We capped it off with Spumoni Tartuffo for desert. It's the real thing.
The restaurant is inexplicably always empty, which is surprising as the food is always superior in quality and reasonably priced. We have never had a bad meal here.
Fantastic! Why were we the only ones in there for lunch??? Food was great, parking was easy.
Maybe they need to adverstise better.
Definitely a solid place for either dinner or lunch. Gracious service in a very comfortable dining room. Definitely recommend.
This is my first time eating here and I totally love this place! I am surprised by the negative comments that I read about it. The food, atmosphere, and service were all excellent. Our waitress couldn't have been more charming or helpful. Myself, my wife, and my daughter are all experienced foodies, and the menu choices and meals exceeded our expectations. The wine list is extensive, and the wine that we ordered couldn't have been better. I will definitely be back, and definitely recommend the restaurant to friends.
The service was awful, the food was so over priced and absolutely terrible. So many things went wrong for this Valentines day experience. The staff was so unprofessional. Ive never witnessed anything like it. The decor in this place was unbelievable also. I will never return to this establishment. They need to shut down and reevaluate themselves from start to finish.
Served by the owner and the food was fabulous. I was told that this restaurant was out of business about 6 years ago and I was sad but on open table I saw it s still there. I'm glad they are still around really Italian food cooked to perfection. Great seafood and live music too were going back Friday.
service help needs training, no life, no ambiance, very sad
Would love to see more people flocking to this gem of a restaurant. Wish it wasn't overlooked.
Perfect location and absolutely divine.
It was 6:00pm, 87 degrees ouside, even hotter inside. We were assured the air conditioner would remedy this. It never did. Others came and left, which we should have done. Ceasar salad lettuce was warm and we were told that it was because it was hot in the kitchen...apparently just like the dining room. The lettuce was cut into shreds unlike a traditional Ceasar...unappetizing. The one server was exceptionally pleasant and accomodating but still charged us $26 for the awful Cesar. The balance of the meal was mediocre at best. We took home a teramisu which was wonderful the next day.
The restaurant had 1 server for the entire service. He was trying very hard, but all dishes were late and food was cold by the time it reached our table. It took almost 25 minutes just to get our bill! Gennaro's use to be such a great restaurant. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon.
Gennaro's has been our go to for years. The food and service are always impeccable.
My wife and I had a very pleasant and enjoyable evening. The pianist in the dining room was excellent.
My husband and I did not have a good time. It started with our reservation being given away to someone impersonating us; then to a calamari appetizer that was not seasoned properly, nor crispy; and finally to an entree that took over an hour to reach our table. Our reservation was at 6:45 pm and our entrees hit our table at 8:20 pm. My pan seared scallops were seasoned well and tender; but unfortunately, there was no good sear on it. I gave up on dessert. The service staff was very nice. Our server apologized for the wait. But overall, we will not be going back.
Never had darkened the door at Gennaro's - but since our first choice was booked, we took a flyer based on reviews. What a pleasant surprise! A very unrushed, quality food and excellent service. Nice touch was the red rose for all the ladies present. We would definitely return.
On a Saturday night at 8, this restaurant was nearly empty. For the price point, the food and house wine were merely OK, but the service was attentive and pleasant. we enjoyed the live piano music, but that stopped at 9.
This was our first time visiting and the food was delicious! The wait staff was friendly, but very very slow. After asking for our bill several times and waiting quite a while sadly, the poor service left a very bad taste in our mouths.
A very nice, smart, sophisticated room with high end table ware. Tiffany our Maitre'd, Hostess, Bar tender, and Server was well informed and willing to please and asked all the right questions. Soothing music, a comfortable romantic place.
The food though was nothing special, good solid Italian dishes, not fancy, just OK presentations, each plate was priced a bit too high for what you get.
The vegetables in the minestrone were all chopped to the same small size so there was no change in texture,
just a so-so soup, needed a lot of Parmesian.
Our entrees were just OK, the chicken in my Chicken Marsala was over cooked and dried out, but my lady friend enjoyed her ravioli.
Everything is a-la-carte, so bring a card with a high limit.
Was a very nice experience. Took my wife here for her birthday. A little abandoned at 6:30 pm on a Friday night, but the food was very good. My medium steak was a bit too medium-rare, but it was still very tender and enjoyable. My wife had an excellent seafood dish consisting of grilled lobster, shrimp, and scallops.
We look forward to going again.
Only downside was the parking. They do have a little parking lot in the back, but seemed really cramped.
Really quiet out of the way location.... nice atmosphere.... really quiet... not crowded.
Perfect for a intimate tete-a-tete, or a group meal where you need to hear one another.
We found it open again on Sunday. Although we were alone in the restaurant, the server was very attentive, the food was delicious,
and the live music was divine.
Good food and good service, enjoyed the meal very much.
