The 1740 General Stanton Inn was named best new restaurant in Southern Rhode Island. Guests delight in traditional Rhode Island cuisine with emphasis on fresh local seafood-- Oysters, clams, calamari, swordfish, shrimp, scallops and our signature dish, Portuguese Cod. Our friendly bartenders excel at making Martinis, Old fashioneds and craft cocktails. Local craft beers are on draft, and the wine list is comprehensive.

Located in the beach community of Charlestown, Rhode Island, The General Stanton is the quintessential New England Inn with charming colonial architecture which dates back to the 1700's. The Inn is rich in history having hosted George Washington and three US Presidents. The Inn was a stagecoach stop, underground railroad safehouse and an illicit gambling house in the roaring 1920's.

The short rib dish with ravioli was the best restaurant meal I've had in a while. The fried Brussel sprouts were delicious. The back large dining area was perfect. Party of 4 - we could have conversation without any problem. The tavern area is a bit noisy and crowded. We'll be going back again soon!

Tables were placed much too close together, so any conversation between two people was automatically shared with guests at the adjacent two tables. The server was very attentive. The food prices rival that of a fine restaurant, but the food quality is more likened to a mid-priced establishment.

We were a slightly larger party. They are understaffed. The servers are working incredibly hard. It was hard to choose a food rating. Some dishes were excellent - the Italian Wedding Soup, the Spinach salad, French fries, and broccoli. Salmon dishes were described as serviceable, as was the baked stuffed shrimp. The prime rib on the other had was not a good cut of meat and was not enjoyed. On the fence as to whether we will be back.

Calamari was some of the best ive ever had. Overall the entire meal was excellent and service was very good. I highly recommend.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. The quality of the food is excellent and the service is always great. It can get noisy but not ever terrible.

We had a fantastic time during our reservation. The staff were amazing, the food was delicious, and the ambience was truly one of a kind. We look forward to future visits out to the Inn!

The food was good, except for the clam cakes. They were over fried, almost burnt, and greasy. Not a big selection for brunch items. The flea market was suppose to be open, one of the reasons we decided to go there. But , despite the big open sign outside, and on the website, they decided to wait on having it until there was a bigger summer crowd.
