General Public is inspired by trying to imagine what an upscale English pub would be if it had the heart of an American brasserie (and was open 11 to 11). It’s also going to signal a little bit of steakhouse, but not too much. And finally, it will look behind itself at the Black Hoof, which you will see reflected in James Santon’s menu here and there. In terms of vibe, the main floor is ‘everything’s gone green’, with lush comfortable banquette seating, warm wood, and barstools designed for long conversations over many cocktails. Upstairs you’ll find a completely different space that transports you to a peachy 80s dream. Somehow these two halves make perfect sense, and complement each other in a seamless conversation, where neither wins the argument, but you really do have to see it! See you soon!

Nice spot for the area. Great service, but the menu misses a bit, you keep looking but can’t quite settle for anything. Good wine list. Sit inside, we were in the patio and the noise on that street is still too loud with the businesses around.

Great experience! Highly recommend. Will definitely be back especially for the lamb tartare and the skate, both dishes were amazing.

Deep fried heaven if that’s what you like. People were enjoying the buzz but IMHO lots of sizzle but not much steak. Makes me think Toronto Life reviews are all emperor with no clothes - going back to mom and pop enterprises without pretence. But I’m old so you can dismiss this as cranky.

Good buzz going on for a Tuesday night. Table service was friendly and prompt and some different spins on bar staples were well executed!

Amazing food. The charred broccolini was the best broccolini I've ever had. The cocktails were also fabulous, my friend and I had two each (all different) and all four were perfect - complex flavours without being too strong or too sweet. The menu is definitely very fish heavy. As a vegetarian I appreciated the veggie sides and the mushroom entree, although one more veggie appetizer or entre option would be nice. Service was also excellent and the place had a nice ambience.

Food very good, tables quite small. A bit noisy Menu ok, limited options for salads and fresh veg. Otherwise very tasty, good service
