General Public is inspired by trying to imagine what an upscale English pub would be if it had the heart of an American brasserie (and was open 11 to 11). It’s also going to signal a little bit of steakhouse, but not too much. And finally, it will look behind itself at the Black Hoof, which you will see reflected in James Santon’s menu here and there. In terms of vibe, the main floor is ‘everything’s gone green’, with lush comfortable banquette seating, warm wood, and barstools designed for long conversations over many cocktails. Upstairs you’ll find a completely different space that transports you to a peachy 80s dream. Somehow these two halves make perfect sense, and complement each other in a seamless conversation, where neither wins the argument, but you really do have to see it! See you soon!

Enjoyed it very much. Service was solid, non-intrusive. Food was excellent, creative. Very good cocktail. Excellent butterscotch pudding dessert. Volume levels are a bit high but not crazy high. The soundtrack was uptempo 80s rock/alt which I had had enough of by the end, but I am a music obsessive so you can probably disregard. Reasonably priced given the cost of mid- high end eating in Toronto these days . Would def return.

Every dish was exceptional. The cocktails were amazing, and given the level of quality, we felt it was good value. Servers were also amazing.

The food was delicious and service was first class! 2 stand-outs were the crudo + banoffee pie; both dishes were balanced so well, complex in flavours/textures, and executed cleanly. Overall, everything was executed precisely.. we ordered a lot of seafood (lobster, black cod), so that precision was impressive. Generally seasoning is on the high side, but acceptable, and the only dish that was a tad too salty, they dealt with it professionally without any hiccups. Another successful Jen Agg restaurant, excited to revisit soon.

Great food - every dish was great. The service was excellent. Attentive but not in your face. Great with recommendations and service. The room is beautiful and has a great vibe.

Nice spot for the area. Great service, but the menu misses a bit, you keep looking but can’t quite settle for anything. Good wine list. Sit inside, we were in the patio and the noise on that street is still too loud with the businesses around.

We arrived a bit early because we wanted to have a cocktail and experience the bar. I was immediately impressed with the design, the wood, those bar lamps! Jeff made me a spectacular Manhattan, the chilled glass a nice touch. We enjoyed oysters as well. Our table for two was cozy and adjacent to three hip fellows celebrating an 80th birthday. Love our city! All three fish crudos were delicious, especially the kampachi. The bread basket totally worth it, warm delicious with marmite butter. Our server Frazier just wonderful and accommodating. The ribeye was cooked and seasoned to perfection and easily serves two. Still thinking about the fries. Great value, felt special, will return. Hats off JA!
