A great experience. We got the rib-eye, which was cooked perfectly and was delicious. What surprised us was how great the pasta was (we got the cavatelli with vodka sauce). Took a little while to get seated initially, but grabbed a drink at the bar (which was likely their hope), and the food was pretty quick after we ordered. Could do without the rather limp free salad that comes with the steak, and the potatoes were looking a little beaten up, but the thick cut bacon was delicious and the drinks were made well. Would definitely go back!
We had steak- filet was cooked perfectly as was my friend’s strip steak. The potatoes that came with dinner were great. Could improve on iceberg lettuce/1 slice of tomato for the dinner salad (came with dinner) and bread could have been warm. Great service and just a old fashioned good Italian restaurant. I love this place.
From everything I had heard, I expected better. The appetizers were great ... the best part of the meal. Since they are a steakhouse, I had the Bone-In Rib Eye Steak. I like it medium well and the cook on the outside was not even, ranging from pasty to burnt. The inside was cooked medium well and the flavor was there, but at best it was an average steak.
Our server and the manager were very nice but the steak was just ok. We were looking for old school and classic which it has, but was so crowded and the food just seemed rushed and not great. My parents used to come here and swear by it but we thought for the price it was missing flavor.
Service was good. Food portions were large but quality was average. Chopped lettuce with a tomato wedge is not much of a 'house salad'. I ordered the veal scallopini and found it to be be very tough. Not sure I would go back when there are so many great option in Chicago.
My husband and I extended our business trip through the weekend and, through a friend's recommendation, had our Saturday night dinner at Gene and Georgetti. The atmosphere was a bustling old-style steak house, full of charm and authenticity. The wine list was thin but adequate and we settled on their best Chianti, which was perfect for steak or pasta. I thought we would both be ordering steaks but on our way to our table, I watched as a beautiful plate of linguine and white clam was served to another table. I convinced my husband to order one steak (he selected the ribeye at the waiter's recommendation) and the linguine white clam. The ribeye, which is served with a fantastic house potato, was delicious and perfectly marbled. But the linguine was overcooked and the clams and sauce were tasteless. Lesson learned - if you go, and you are not from the midwest, stay away from the pasta - it's bland and does not come with a salad.
Met for mid-afternoon Saturday family lunch and had a great time. Good wine, good food, great dessert, and fantastic service. Our server managed to get me a lasagna although it is not offered in the lunch menu. The vibe was real comfortable -- every guest I saw in the restaurant appeared to be completely relaxed and in no hurry -- and it all seemed to click in the first floor dining room with its subdued lighting and dark colors. G&G continues to exude a genuine Italian family-run atmosphere that, ironically, has got that whole Danish hygge thing going on! Oh yeah, make sure you have the lemon cake for dessert.
Excellent food and nostalgic atmosphere. Unfortunately the waiter was argumentative and not very flexible about how we wanted to divide up the bill . Brought the incorrect drink order and acted like it was our fault. Have eaten there before with a different waiter and have never had these issues.
visited Gene and Georgetti on recommendation of friend. had oz. rib eye with shrimp cocktail, caesar salad and baked potato (huge). Shrimp cocktail was average; a little watery and not all that flavorful. Steak was excellent and cooked to perfection. came out perfectly medium rare. I'm glad I went and will definitely return next time in in Chicago.
We ordered Fried Calamari, Filet mignon, and Strip steak. The calamari was overcooked and therefore chewy, and the breading was nothing to write home about. I've had much better at a Carrabbas chain restaurant in the suburbs of Atlanta. The steaks were over-seared and under-seasoned. I would never again pay that price, nor half that price for the steak we received. I must say the service was top notch. I knew the decor was going to be older, and I expected more of a classic ambiance, but that wasn't a huge issue. The food was a huge disappointment at any price range.
First visit to Chicago and was looking forward for special evening with wife, but ended being disappointed. They stressed casual dining. no torn jeans or sports apparel. People were wearing shorts when we arrived. Waiter didn't introduce himself, but gave us a menu and came back much later to take order. Stated each entree came with potatoes and house salad. Potatoes end up being french fries and salad was just chopped up iceberg lettuce with dressing. Also, they only had one bathroom working for the entire place. They promote this establishment as being one of the oldest in Chicago with great atmosphere, and named one of the best restaurants in Chicago. I expected fine dinning with this description, but received mediocre service. If you are planning to visit Chicago for the first time, please don't waist your time and money. Locals told us to try Chicago Cut steak house. Definitely will look them up next time we go. As for Gene & Georgetti, they won't ever get my business. Close the place DOWN!!
My wife and I went to Gene and Georgetti's for our anniversary. My sister had recommended it to us. The entire meal was great, but the best part was actually the appetizer. We had the fried raviolli with meat sauce. Incredible. The salads were also amazing. Dressing was perfect. I had a ribeye that was cooked to perfection and it nearly melted in my mouth. The double baked potato was out of this world. My wife had a specialty salad and she said it was delicious. She at the whole thing which is rare for her.
