Once your there, they never forget you, it’s like waking into your own dinning room at home!!
We made reservations for my husband’s birthday dinner. We were seated upstairs where it was so hot. I ordered my favorite red wine by the glass for both of us and thought this was going to get better. Wrong. The wine was not what I ordered. I drink it all the time I know the taste. I was going to send it back, but after further issues, I decided not to. We got our appetizer crab cakes. They were deep fried and burnt. They were hard as a rock. Ugh. Ok. We will just order dinner. I ordered whitefish and mashed potatoes and he ordered a 12oz ribeye medium rare. With Brussels sprouts side dish. The steak and Brussels were brought to the table and we were told at that time they were out of whitefish AND mashed potatoes. seriously? I am starving at that point so I look at the menu again and order sea bass. Great! While I’m waiting for my sea bass my husband cuts open his steak and sees it is medium well. Not medium rare. No pink at all. Completely brown center. Ugh!! Ok. So I try the Brussels - they are hard and crunchy and bland. Ugh again! Finally the sea bass comes out covered in hundreds of capers (ewwww) i have never seen this preparation so I ask if they can remove these and just give me a bereblanc instead. No problem. He takes the fish away. He comes back. He says “the kitchen doesn’t have that” omg! Ok. How about chicken? I order Greek style chicken. The chicken comes out. It’s a paper thin chicken breast butterflied with oregano on one side. It’s hard and chewy. I can’t eat it. We get the check with black printer ink smeared all over the check so it is unable to be read. Cannot make out any of the items. We ask for a new bill. We were charged for whitefish, potato, sea bass and 3 sides of pasta! Whaaat? With all the fantastic dining options in Chicago DO NOT go here. Waste of $200. Did I mention we are both in restaurant management and find this experience unacceptable. No manager ever came to the table.
A true Chicago gem. Food was great, servers were outstanding, and loved the outdoor ambiance (there is an el train overhead, but it adds to the overall Chicago atmosphere).
The restaurant has a beautiful ambiance and delicious food. We are outdoors but would have easily eaten inside as they had an appropriate amount of distance between tables and were not over crowded. Our server was very responsive to our needs. Most of all, our table was ready upon arrival!
Best fried calamari we ever had. Garbage salad was delicious. 20 oz ribeye steak was medium rare the way I like it. The filet mignon was ordered medium rare, charred too much on the top and undercooked on the inside. Every bite had the bitter char taste and texture was dry. Inedible. The cream spinach was delicious, the roasted potatoes were overdone, charred and dry even with the oil/butter sauce. The tiramisu and gelato was one of the best desserts we ever had. The service was great and was happy this restaurant was open. Next time we come here from California we’ll try this restaurant again. Hopefully, it will be better next time.
Excellent service. Our server was great, and the man at the coffee window was very friendly and helpful.
The food and service is great!
It was a bit surreal under the Covid guidelines. Definitely missed
The buzzy vibe but the food and service was first rate as it always is
Wonderful meal, and wonderful service as always! We sat outside on their new patio area and it was just delightful. Safe standards in place with temperature checks and masks worn by employees and patrons when moving about.
Check out their additions to the menu!!!
The food was great, and they have the right precautions in place for COVID. It was a wonderful meal, and service was fantastic. Absolutely loved our experience and hope to be back soon
Service was excellent. They take all proper precautions while making the experience enjoyable.
Our return to Chicago and to dine at Gene Filet Mignon; and Whitefish was outstanding. Concluding with Tiramisu - we closed-out one of the best lunches of our trip.
Staff was extremely attentive and engaging. This restaurant has been and remains a legend for anyone who has lived downtown. Now 35 years later - I’m glad to return to Chicago and find it still a “10!”
Let me add their COVID19 safety aspects were truly appreciated too.
They always go above and beyond. They treat their good customers like family. We always have a great experience in there. The food and service never disappoint.
My lady and I randomly chose this place on a whim. I’m so glad we did. The food was amazing, the service was great, the ambiance was nice with outdoor seating , and the value was really good. I will be back here again soon!
Amazing Staff!!! The food and drinks are so delicious!! A truly incredible experience every single time I visit for dine in or takeout.
I wanted to go somewhere and feel safe as this was our first weekend of indoor dining!
They have a great set of rules to follow, tables spaced well apart and a staff that was delightful!
Can’t wait to go back! Thanks!!! Martha
Colin the manager is fantastic and extremely friendly!
G&G never disappoints. Is it possible to give an 11 out of 10?
So happy to have them back. First time IN a restaurant since Chicago was granted permission. Felt 100% safe the entire time.
Love this place.
Amazing! G&G is one of our favorite restaurants and now that there is outdoor seating available, we were able to enjoy an incredible Father’s Day meal in their new sidewalk patio. Our meals were delicious and the service was lovely. Thanks, G&G. So glad you are back!
Glad to be back!
Glad we made it to this iconic restaurant ... and not a moment too soon, as, the next day they had a kitchen fire and they're now closed until further notice.
My only observation is that the bone-in filet was bland. Cooked great, but, lacking flavor. My husband had the pork chops and really enjoyed them (first time we've been asked how we liked our pork done - who knew??!)
Seemed less authentic and hurried than my last experience (ten years).
Baked clams, grilled calamari, lobster tail, steaks. All great as always here
This is probably the best steak restaurant in Chicago outstanding service excellent food great ambience.
What a wonderful experience I had at this lovely steakhouse. This is old school at it's finest. I arrived early due to an early morning flight the next day and was accomodated immediately. The fliet was cooked perfectly, medium rare with a lovely pepper corn sauce. I have to give a shout out to Hugo, who recommended the perfect wine to go with the filet. And his chocolate espresso martini paired with the tiramisu was heaven. I was by myself (female) and the staff there made sure I was comfortable at all times. I met a few locals...which was an extreme pleasure. And a really big shout out to all the male staff that were sporting pink ties in honor of October being breast cancer awareness month. If you want a great meal, paired with outstanding service.....visit this place.
I think this place is over priced. They need to update the restaurant decor. The mash potatoes and spinach casserole was excellent. The lamb chops was 3 1/2 out of 4. Excellent excellent service.
Ordered strip steak medium rare. Very thick piece. Cut in middle very red. Asked to have cooked more, waiter was very apologetic. Brought back still red. Cooked more, still red but ate it anyway. A lot of history in this restaurant, will definitely come back and order medium to Medium well knowing the steaks are this thick. Excellent Italian waiter.
It was my wife and I anniversary so went to Chicago. First time eating here and the food was terrible. Chocked it down as it was not worth complaining. Just want to have a special night and we have been to a lot of steakhouses but this lacked in almost every way. For being almost 80 years in the business we thought they did things right but we where wrong. Seriously worst steakhouse I have been to. Made me mad it wasted my night out.
We got seated a little early, which was great as it really got busying we would of had to wait. Food and drinks were excellent along with service
As always, the staff was amazing, the service was excellent, the food was perfect. if you leave here hungry you have a hollow leg. this is and will always be my favorite steak house in Chicago.
Always a great experience. Classic food and service
Great service! Can’t complain, food great as always!
Recommended by lifelong Chicagoan as the best old-school steakhouse in town and it did not let us down. Excellent service, generous portions and perfectly cooked T-bone for two.
We both had to send our steaks back because they were seriously under-cooked. My wife had to send hers back a second time because it was under-cooked again. We would not recommend this place at all.
The steaks were a disappointment. They were over-cooked.
A classic Italian steak place, both the food and service were excellent. We started off with a couple orders of toasted raviolis, Then most of us had salads, as well as steaks for dinner I had the spaghetti and meatballs which was excellent Because the portion sizes were large everyone was too full to have dessert which was a shame because they looked excellent
The A/C wasn’t working in half of the Resturant. Unfortunately for us we were sat on that side. After our meal, the manager came by to apologize and to open the window next to us and that was a huge relief. The meal was fantastic and the service was amazing as always.
This place was great. Super old-school Italian steakhouse. Went with girlfriends for my 40th bday. Great value, awesome service and fun atmosphere! I liked that the staff were all so friendly and kinda make you feel like you’re a VIP but the place is so approachable and not stuffy at all. Great spot!
Birthday dinner although they were sold out of the pasta special. We did get a complimentary birthday flan dessert!
