Gem Creole Saloon
The fried fish was poorly executed. The batter was too heavy and the amount of fish was very small.
I had a very positive experience at the Gem Creole Saloon. The service was friendly and speedy. The portions were very large. On the advice of the server, I did not order an appetizer with my entree of
Fried Chicken. I am glad that I followed that advice. The service was large enough that I took half of
it home and had it for lunch the next day. The Fried Chicken was wonderful, crispy on the outside and
tender on the inside. Not greasy at all. I would order it again.
The Shrimp and Grits were fabulous! We came to celebrate my mothers 88th birthday and she enjoyed it immensely.
Absolutely a gem! The food was fabulous! I had always avoided even trying Cajun because I thought it a cuisine that is supposed to be spicy. However, what I had was perfectly seasoned with only a tiny bit of heat in the sausage. I am now a convert. I had the shrimp and grits which is covered in gumbo. Oh wow, oh wow oh wow!!! Service was excellent as well. I will definitely be back and recommend to friends.
A little hiccup getting our server when we moved from bar to dining. Once Justin (our server) got on the job everything flowed beautifully. We’ll be back when in town!
Absolutely wonderful in all areas. Wine list is limited is the only reservation in a situation that otherwise was fantastic. If you like genuine NOLA food, this place is a must!
We were seated quickly the setting was nice but very noisy. We had to shout between us and our server. The people who were seated 10 minutes after us had a server and appetizers before a server took our order. All staff were very courteous. The menu wad a bit difficult to interpret if your not familiar with southern food. The food came differently than was expected and alot more spicey. No indication on the menu noted the spiciness. However we enjoyed the meal and we plan to return.
Great place for a nice dinner. Good creole type food.
The food is phenomenal and the wait staff are excellent. Phil makes a damn good cocktail.
Service was spot on, Food was great, we tried a couple appetizers both were great. I enjoy creole food so that helps.
Went with another couple for a party of four. We all enjoyed what we ate. The gumbo was delicious, as well as the voodoo fries and Cajun cioppino. Would like to try the jambalaya next time! The one thing that was a bit disappointing was the dessert beignets. I thought they'd be light and fluffy like what I'm used to, but they were dense and heavy. They still tasted fine, but not what I was hoping for in my dessert. Overall a fun little place with a nice atmosphere and decent service. Make sure you make a reservation though, it's really busy on the weekends.
Arrived for my 7:15 reservation at 7:10. Waited over 15 minutes without being greeted although numerous staff members passed by the waiting area. We left without ever being acknowledged. I’m ok waiting for my table on a busy weekend, but it is never acceptable to be ignored. Disappointed in this experience
Drove 40 minutes to enjoy this restaurant. Food was very good and a nice change from the standard fare. Need to call in advance to enjoy the jambalaya. 45 minute prep time. I am sure that it would be worth the wait!
Amazingly AWESOME experience. If you want a great dining experience, this is the place.
We brought friends - this being our Second visit - loved cioppino first visit - ordered again...if it had been first visit I would not have ordered again - first, loaded with seafood - largest mussels ever - plump, generous amounts of crab, delicious! Second, small mussels and while broth was excellent soup was predominantly fennel(and I’m talking huge chunks of) I recommended to a neighbor who loves cioppino but now have reservations about recommendation! Spinach salad is one of best I’ve had and your biscuits sublime. I felt beignets lacked flavor (salt, sugar) and didn’t melt in your mouth as some I’ve had.
I want you to succeed but to the quality of our first meal with you. I felt my soup was all that was left in bottom of your pot and you dug to fill the bowl! I was thankful our friends didn’t go with soup. I can’t explain my disappointment - even the one small clam had an empty shell. We drove from Monmouth, and it would be worth the drive but we need the meal to be consistent and quite frankly I don’t know what to think- new cook? -fish delivery the next day?
We were so excited to find you and regret you did not meet our expectations!
Yes, we had a reservation but didn’t realize that because it was the NFL playoffs there would be 3 TVs blasting the game while the 3rd TV was showing wrestling.......
The waitress apologied at the end of the meal regarding the service as someone didn’t show up for work.....we told her it wasn’t her fault and still tipped 20%
It definitely was a Sports Bar type of atmosphere and we were expecting something totally different!
Service wonderful, food really good, drinks superb! Thanks Phil!
I always enjoy coming here when i get the opportunity. Great food, drinks and service.
Incredible experience. Buttermilk biscuits were out of this world. Drinks were strong but not “flooring.” My date was thoroughly impressed with the service and friendliness of the staff, the exceptional food, and the overall atmosphere. I was throughly impressed that my wallet wasn’t drained for such a wonderful experience.
We are from Texas and found Gem’s through Open Table resv system. Once we were in town and asked a few people, we couldn’t get a solid review and started doubting our choice. We stuck with it and were glad we did. Phil, the manager was both bartender and one of two waiters. He had allowed others to be home for holidays. We ate there on 12/26. The hushpuppies, fried okra, fried chicken and crawfish etoufee was all great. Etoufee was different than N’Awlins with a bit of tangy flavor, but loaded with crawfish and some heat. The fried chicken was two large boneless, skinless breasts. We could not begin to eat all of our meal. Highly recommend trying it. We would go back for sure.
Such a great date night surprise! The service was amazing and friendly, the food was absolutely delicious and the prices were good to! Our new favorite date night spot!
The food was authentic New Orleans. The gumbo and the crawfish etouffe was to die for. My wife had the ciopinno, and loved every bite. The service was outstanding-very attentive, friendly, and helpful. She also had the beet salad, and continually mentioned how good every bite was.
Hats off to the chef and our server.
We will return.
Too salty. Please find a way to cut back. Pasta too salty to eat. Saltiest food I e ever had actually.
Could be awesome if that was improved. Will try later to see if changes were made.
We had one issue with cold coffee but they responded right away. Waitress even came to us at end of meal and apologized again for the temp of coffee. She was great!
Great Food and happy Servers !!! Every time we come to town we have to stop !!!
As always, Gem Creole Saloon delivers. Nice ambience, friendly service, tasty food, good drinks. The Cajun Cioppino was delicious!
We visited the Gem for a birthday dinner. The server was on top of his game! At no time was my water glass even empty. The bartender Phil makes exceptional drinks, you can tell that he has a passion for the craft. Our food was exceptional, my favorite is the black and blue pasta. They also have great oyster shooters with fresh grated horseradish. The gem is one of my favorite spots in McMinnville, you can tell that the customer comes first here.
Fabulous food. Great service. Fun place Loved the shrimp and grits
Will be going back many times. The food is exceptional.
Good Food and service was great. Made our reservation on Open table 30 min before and got seated right away.
It was my birthday and it was just fabulous. Great food and service (delightful humor our server had). He also explained to us everything in detail. We had a great time and well worth the over an hour drive. Will absolutely go back. Would love if they added a mufalata sandwich :)
Stepping into an elegant Creole atmosphere here in small town Oregon may be surprising but The Gem carries the theme well right down to the bluesy soundtrack. Start with a cocktail and end with the beignets: for the entree I suggest the fried chicken or cioppino. Interesting wine list, too.
First time going to Gem and I have to say everything was really good from the wait staff to the food. Reserved a table (recommended on weekends) and the only down point of the evening was no ice in the water ... no ice, everything else was great.
This was my first time here, honestly I was expecting more. I did not like the TVs and servers seemed overwhelmed after we arrived.
the service was warm and the dinner cold. Might give it another try
Delicious food and a comfortable setting, Gem is a real local treat. There was a bit of confusion with which server was in charge of our table, but as soon as they straightened that out service was very good.
I can't wait to go back and eat more Jambalaya! It was just amazing. I will be craving it for weeks. Had yummy appetizers and cocktails while we waited for our meal (the Kentucky Mule was great). This place is such a great addition to McMinnville!
Found just the right spot? Nice place. great staff. Good Cajun flavors and tastes., not to spicy, for me. And just right for my husband. Decent pricing.
I had gumbo with shrimp and an order of cornbread. My husband had the fried chicken. Both were delicious: the gumbo thick & spicy, the chicken portion large.
The wine was good but beer might complement the food better. We were there early evening: service was excellent
