I booked a reservation for my fiancé’s 30th birthday and added a special request on open table. Once we arrived at gejas and were seated my fiancé got up to use the restroom so I reminded our server it was his birthday and her response was “thank you for reminding me I will bring out a surprise cake for him around dessert”. Unfortunately that never happened, our server was occupied with a table celebrating their anniversary and was at their table talking to them the entire time. We spent a lot of time waiting and our server did not bring out anything for my fiancé’s birthday, let alone even tell him happy birthday, but instead brought out a cake and champagne for the other table. It was very disappointing as we chose to spend this very special birthday celebration at Gejas, and we were basically ignored the entire time. Sadly we would have received better service at a cheaper restaurant where they could at least have honored my special request. It definitely bummed out my fiancé and made me even more upset.
We use to come here all the time. The last time being 5 years ago and wanted to come back for my birthday dinner. I wasn’t impressed and told my husband when I suggest it again in a few years tell me no. The service as always was great, drinks were made strong. Noise there were some noisy tables around us and wasn’t as romantic as it had been in the past.
They really cut down on the amount of food they give you especially for the cheese fondue. Was not a fan of peppers and onions for the cheese fondue and one of the breads just crumbled apart in the basket and the cheese, it wouldn’t even stay on the fork to dip it. Salsa are great and the dressing is soo good.
The main course was good, but for the price it’s not worth it. They drastically increased their prices over the years. Yea it’s great they offer a groupon bit you’re still paying the same price as it was before so you’re really not getting that great of a deal. If a restaurant like this is offering a groupon it’s because their hurting for business and they are overpriced as it is. For the same amount of money I would have preferred to go to a nicer restaurant in the city. Is it worth it to go once, yes for the experience, but after that there are too many other good restaurants to try.
Dear Anonymous~Thank you for celebrating your birthday with Geja's Cafe. We are sorry to read your disappointment in our price increases since your last visit. The two main contributors to our price increases in the last 5 years is that Chicago Minimum Wage has gone up 70% from 2015 and the cost of our lobster is up 28%. The price of our most popular Premier Dinner in 2015 was $53.95 and now it is $67.95. This is a 26% increase over 5 years. We will always strive to provide a great value.
Nice atmosphere, fun to fondue, location been there forever, service was excellent, but the quality of food- not so great. For $65+ per person, the bread was just breads d stale, same with dessert, some regular cut up fruit and stale churros. Exciting to dip, but wasn’t very exciting food. As for the entree portion, seafood And proteins were decent with veggies in the middle. We decided to splurge and get a bottle of wine which was good. But with tip, our bill was $240 for 2. Rather drop that at a classic Chicago steakhouse. But it was worth the try and experience. But wouldn’t say it’s the most romantic restaurant in the city... Thank goodness for my adventurous partner whoSe company made the meal better.
I took my partner for her birthday and it was very romantic even for how busy it was. We had a great experience and will dine again!
I did really like this place and would recommend it but only for a couple. For me the only thing that annoyed me is that with the per person pricing you get the same amount of food for the cheese and dessert fondue regardless of if it's a group of 2 or 4. Since I came with a group of 4 it wasn't as good of a value as it would be for a couple. Basically one small basket of bread and fruit split between 4 is half the amount per person as it would be split between 2 yet it's still the same price per person. I do believe for the main course there is a larger plate for a group of 4 rather than a couple though. It does have a great ambiance and the staff is very friendly. Next time I'll come with just my husband rather than as a double date.
Our first time back at Geja’s in many years, we celebrated our anniversary and had a wonderful meal. Our server, Arturo, was helpful and attentive. We had a bottle of the Geja’s label wine, which was fruity for a Chardonnay but fine. The food was abundant and delicious! We had the full, 3-course dinner, starting with the cheese fondue. I stuck with seafood—scallops and lobster, my husband added beef tenderloin, and we finished with the chocolate fondue. Lots of fun cooking the main course ourselves We left stuffed and satisfied!
We were VERY disappointed this time around. We have been visiting Geja's regularly since the 70's. The place is still the same BUT the values have REALLY gone downhill. Not only have the prices just about doubled but the portions have also shrunk. The cheese and chocolate fondues were especially small considering there were four of us.
As always, the service by the servers was outstanding.
In all honesty, I don't know if I'll ever patronize the establishment again.
Hi Mimi~I am very sorry to read about your disappointing experience recently. The prices have doubled in my 25+ years here. The major contributors to price increases over the the last 5 years is that Chicago's minimum wage has gone up 70% and Lobster prices have gone up 28%. Geja's always want to provide a great value to all our guests. I assure you we have not reduced our portions and if guests would like more cheese fondue or chocolate it is at no additional cost. I hope you will visit again.
Past it's prime.
The Cheese Fondue is still excellent, everything else mediocre at best.
Service is not bad but perfunctory - no attention to individual preferences.
Hostess entirely clueless and detached.
The wine list is outdated, vintages listed are not available.
If you are fine with time travel to the 70's this is the place for you.
Excellent as always. Arturo and his co-waiter were fantastic and attentive as always. We always enjoy coming to Gejas whether it is a special event (wine dinners) or just friends getting together.
Was a super romantic dinner for our anniversary. Everything was outstanding from the service to the atmosphere to the delicious food. We will for sure be back.
Phenomenal service and even better food. Couldnt have asked for a better way to celebrate our anniversary! Will be returning
Geja's is an exceptional place to take a date or to celebrate a birthday or anniversary. It has great ambiance and is perfect to spend a few hours over a 4-course meal that is exceptional.
Hi Scott~ Thank you for dining with us to celebrate your special occasion. We look forward to celebrating your next special occasion with you. Happy 2020! Jeff Lawler Proprietor.
Food and service was great. Cleared plates a little too fast. Disappointed with hostess staff. There were about 20 tables open. When we called for reservation the hostess said we could select our table upon our arrival however when we arrived she only gave us option of two tables
Our waitress Mary was amazing!!! Along with the rest of the staff!! Love Gejas. We go for my birthday every year!!! .
Hi MaryK~ Thank you for dining with us and the review. Our Mary has been with us for over 38 years and she is amazing. Happy Birthday! Jeff Lawler, Proprietor
Unique experience. Great service. Tables very very close together- so little privacy though. Food was fresh and good quality, but of course not cooked, so only flavoring were the sauces. Nice selection on the sauces.
Prices though were too high, a minimum of about $65 per person without the drinks. We went in with a Groupon worth $65 and still came out with a bill of $140 with only 2 glasses of wine each.
Hi Ron~ Thank you for dining with us. I agree with you that some of the tables are rather close together, I would like to recommend you request a booth for your next visit. We did raise our prices due to minimum wage going up to $15/hr. In 2015 when I bought Geja's minimum wage was $8.50/hr, this is a 76% increase in wages in just 5 years. This is why we are focusing on delivery a great evening to every guest that dines with us. We look forward to serving you again. Jeff Lawler, Proprietor.
Great place for a first date. Feels more like an experience than just dinner
NYE wonderful experience. Great service. Consistent fondue meal even on the busy holiday
The NYE deal at Geja’s was wonderful and the food, as usual, was too! Would highly recommend Geja’s on NYE... and any night!
Excellent way to end the year! Delicious and great first experience!
Very special ambiance and excellent food.
My husband and I started going to Geja's when we were dating 41 years ago! It is still as wonderful today as it ws then. It's our go to for special occasions and celebrations.
Good Day Swilling~ Wow!! 41 years ago. Thank you for being a long time fan of Geja's Fondue Dining. Have your ever come to our Celebration of Marriage Night on the Monday before Valentine's Day? This is the evening you will earn the numbers of years you have been married off your food bill. Just bring in some proof of the year you were married. This year's evening is on Monday, February 10th. Have a wonderful 2020! Jeff Lawler, Proprietor
This dining experience is unique and different. Our server Dino was accommodating and responsive. The 3 different fondue’s gave us a great experience and very tasty. The place is crowded but each dining area is cozy
The food was good, but the prices are ridiculous high. For $61.99 a person that’s not even including drinks is very very expensive. Unless you are super rich. I’m not happy because I have a Groupon and asked the sever if I can use it today and he said yes. When I asked for my check then he told that today was a blackout to use my Groupon. So I was very disappointed with the honesty of the restaurant for the promotions that the restaurant trying to attract customers to their restaurant.
Hi CamZ~ I want to apologize for the confusion for the use of the Groupon. We did have blackout dates from December 16th through December 31st, then again around Valentine's week. These are very busy periods for Geja's Cafe. As for the expensive pricing, our ingredients of lobster, scallops, beef tenderloin are very expensive ingredients, but the largest reason for our pricing is that minimum wage has gone up from $8.50/hr in 2015 to $15.00/hr now. This increase has hurt Chicago restaurants.
The best romantic restaurant ever. A best place to joint with friends
Birthday venue every year for, oh, almost 40 yrs. Always fabulous.
They sat us 40 minutes late for our reservation, promised us a bottle of wine to make up for it and then did not follow through. Good food though.
Amazing experience, food and ambiance. 14 yr Anniversary dinner so intimacy, fun and yummy was in order…check, check and check…the nostalgia was a super bonus! Such a cool place to relax and enjoy great company and fun food.
Our servers were amazingly friendly (hostess…just meh at best…but whatever), super attentive and accommodating as well as spot on with food/wine/cocktail suggestions. The food is “simple” and bonus fun…you get to dip/cook/smother it to your liking!
Definitely a must if you’d are looking for a romantic night out in Chicago. We’ll be back for sure!
My wife and I have been dining at Gejas for over 12 years and it never gets old! The food and service was amazing as always. We showed up early so we can enjoy the small bar in back and the “Gejas Manhattan” was outstanding.
First time at Geja’s Cafe and it was wonderful for our anniversary. Shot stand outside the restaurant, amazing cheese fondue app, cooking own meats and veges and ending with dessert. Everything was amazing. Your clothes will smell like oil but it’s 100% worth it!
Thank you for giving us a try and enjoying your first Geja's Fondue experience. We look forward to serving you again. Happy 2020!
I would recommend Geja’s for the ambiance but frankly it is far too expensive for what it is. I enjoy the cheese and the chocolate but the main course leaves a lot to be desired for the price. Very cool spot ambiance wise.
The ambiance is amazing and the fondue is tons of fun. Delicious and non-stop. Service is top notch.
My husband and I celebrated our anniversary with Geja’s while in town over the holidays. We were treated with VIP service from the moment we walked in the door, and throughout our entire evening. From the bar staff, to the host, to our fabulous server and waitstaff, and even the guitar player, we could not have had a better experience with an amazing group of people. Even a personally signed Happy Anniversary card! Not to mention the food being delicious and so much fun. I would highly recommend to anyone!
We go to Gejas every year after Christmas with our family! Great place to relax and enjoy the ambiance and food! ❤️
Amazing! In past times we felt like the portions were bigger, but we understand that it’s busy during the holidays. Wonderful service and great food either way !
So Geja’s cafe... well thought I’d be very happy with this experience. It was our anniversary and I wanted to give my wife a very unique experience as I heard good reviews about this place.
To start off, had a 7 15 pm reservation. Made it a week back. We arrived there and the valet received us well, so that went alright.
When we got in at exactly 7 15. The front reception told us that they were prepping our table, later to realise that that was not the case. We were waiting for almost 45 mins before we got our table. More so, the front reception were not even pleasant, they were going their merry way speaking to each other and not updating us unless we went to them. It rather looked like they didn’t care.
So the place was packed with a lot of noise and chaos. I had asked to be seated in a nice place when I made the reservation, however, they gave us a tight corner where we could hardly move and promised us a glass of champagne for the wait. Funny but, we had to ask for the champagne to get it which I felt was very unprofessional from the hotel staff. Saw a clear lack of coordination, organisation and control. Matter of fact no one even welcomed us and this is supposedly a high end dining place.
Now for the food, it was ok, the experience was ok, the service I would say was decent and not high end.
We never felt value for the review or price. It was an ok experience. Unfortunately, I am not going to recommend this place to my folks. Happy dining to the rest who finds a better experience.
Perfect for a date night or a special birthday day, 10 out of 10. Can’t wait for go back!
We came here on a Saturday night. The restaurant is not overly large and it was busy. Note it is well worth requesting & waiting for a booth as tables are often very close together. We had the cheese fondue and dessert chocolate fondue which was perfect, along with a bottle of wine. We are not as fond of having our meats and seafood cooked in oil and feel that is a bit expensive for what it is. Good service. Weeknights would definitely be quieter and more relaxed.
Love the food
Love the atmosphere
Love the service
I was sick for 2 days after eating here.
Everything was perfect but I could hear the waiter next to me and he did a better explanation of the food than ours.
