Geja's Café Ratings and Reviews
Went here for my birthday. loved the outside fireplace to get warm. Seating was pretty close quarters but the noise level was low. We both enjoyed separate entrees which come with a cheese fondue appetizer, salad and dessert to share. Most people in the previous reviews stated they paid about $300, but with a Groupon our dinner including 2 drinks each the beef / Lobster entree and the Chicken and scallops entree was $130
We chose Geja's to celebrate our 4th anniversary and we wanted to see what "Chicago's most romantic restaurant" looked like. Unfortunately, dimming the lights and playing classic guitar in the background is not enough to make the place romantic. The restaurant is cavernous and dark (the waiters carry flashlights so they can tell you about the food on the table), there are too many tables for a space that size, so it feels very cramped. You're too close to the tables around you, which makes things less than romantic. Our table was squeezed into a corner with 4 others and it was honestly too small for the fondue pot and the tray they served the meat and vegetables on. We were tightly squeezed around the table and when hot oil from the fondue pot splattered it ended up on my face, dangerously close to my eye. The waiter handled it very professionally giving me a cold napkin to relieve the pain. The food was good but nothing impressive. We had their premier dinners and two glasses of the house wine each and ended up paying almost $100/person (including a good tip). We didn't think the food was worth that much but I guess that's what you pay for too small pieces of lobster tail. We had a decent experience here, but I don't think we'll return. You can have a much better dinner in a much more 'romantic' restaurant for $100/person. Having all your clothes and hair smell like frying oil for days doesn't help the experience either. There is a dress code and it was our anniversary so we dressed up and now we have a hefty dry cleaning bill to take care of.
It's a pretty good fondue experience, but in my opinion it's not as romantic as they'd like to make it out to be. I recommend a fun night out with friends rather than trying to make it a romantic encounter.
Pretty good fondue experience.
Heating elements under-fueled to encourage timed finish and turning tables.
The smell will permeate your clothing.
It's hot. Very hot. Ventilation sucks.
Perfect date night spot. Candlit so very romantic ambiance. The cheese and chocolate fondues were our favorite. You cook your own entree which others complained about, but we found it fun. The only downside was our server wasn't attentive or polite to us, so we had to ask other staff member for our next courses/drinks.
I surprised my boyfriend by taking him here, we were celebrating a late sweetest day date night. When I say this place is amazing, it's AMAZING. When we arrived our booth wasn't ready yet, so we sat at the bar, the bar has these appetizers a bowl of cheese and crackers, they are fantastic. The ambiance was so sexy, I requested a booth, which I'm glad I did because the tables are so close together. The food was amazing, my boyfriend was so happy, he kept saying you picked a great place. I ordered thr chicken breast with the jumbo shrimp, and he ordered the prince seafood, everything was great, and the dipping sauces were great as well. We will definitely be back, thank you Geja's
My wife and I used to eat there quite often over the years for special occasions. We hadn’t been back for several years. The only thing we thought had changed was the value. The portions of meat were smaller and some of the other dipping food items. The prices had increased significantly also.
Lighting is terrible. It is so dark the wait staff utilize flash lights when your food is delivered so you can see what your eating. Unless you get a booth, ( which I requested but did receive considering the hostess called me earlier in the week to confirm I was booked for a booth) the seating is so close to other people you hear every conversation being had by others next to you.
After dining at Geja's this week all I could think was "what is wrong with me?" I've lived in the neighborhood on and off for 40 years and haven't dined at the restaurant in decades.
Not only was the food as delicious and fun to eat as it has always been but the wine list complemented the meal nicely and the service was excellent. Be smart don't wait as I did to go to Geja's for a special celebration, go there tonight!
The very best fondue in the US! No kidding. The cheese course is amazing. The flaming chocolate fondue is incredible. The dips for the main course are updated and relevant. The dill sauce, Thai sauce, and horseradish sauce are especially yummy. Wonderful service. Extensive wine list. The classic guitar playing in the background adds the perfect touch.
the restaurant and ambiance was really great, I more selected this restaurant for the live music. The food was just okay given the cost. The steak was an amazing cut and things like lobster on the menu. But at the end of the day its just chopped up meat and veggies that you fry yourself.... The best part to me was the cheese fondue. But not worth the $50+ meal per person.. The chocolate fondue at desert was just okay as well. To be honest I expect to pay that amount and have every piece of my meal be amazing rather than just average.
This was a totally disappointing experience. altho the service was fine, the food was not as advertised or expected. The serving sizes was extremely small (1oz of each meat) no seasoning and not the best of cut.
When spending 170.00 for 2 I wouldn't expect to have to stop and get something to eat before going home.
I would NOT recommand this place to anyone
Fantastic service! Our server was very attentive and personable. Each course came out precisely when we were ready for it. Wine glasses and water glasses were never empty, but we never once felt intruded upon.
The ambiance is wonderfully intimate. They've done a nice job of erecting subtle barriers to give you some privacy from the other guests without making you feel boxed in. It's a great place for a romantic outing -- though be prepared that dinner will take a couple hours to get through, so it's not a place to go for a quick bite before a movie!
Food was delicious as well. The cheese and dessert courses are by far the best, so don't skip those! No complaints about the entree course; it was quite good as well, but just not the highlight. On the entree portion, I highly recommend getting beef tenderloin. The lobster was also very good.
It was a fantastic dinner. I rated the noise level as moderate, but we were seated right next to a live guitarist. He was good about staying quiet as he realized people were around him, but if I were anywhere else in the restaurant it would probably be quieter. Only personal beef (no pun intended) with the food is that you have to make it yourself in the fondue. It was really fun and delicious anyway but for the $$$$$ that was spent it was ingredients om a plate and boiling oil. Paying for the service, which was right there when our fondue fire went out, and the intimate atmosphere was worth every penny (on a special occasion).
appetizer entree desert built into the price. So much delicious food and a great bottle of wine and about 2.5 hours there.
