  • Neighborhood gem
Gees Restaurant & Bar is an independently-owned, restaurant, bar, and terrace set within North Oxford’s famous Grade II listed Victorian conservatory, once home to the Gee family’s greengrocers and floristry, just a ten-minute walk from Oxford’s city centre.

Enjoyed by locals and visitors alike for the past four decades, Gees serves a distinctly Mediterranean-inspired menu using the best seasonal ingredients, simply prepared and expertly cooked by head chef Lee Parsons, featuring regional dishes of Spain, Portugal and Italy.

The private dining space, Gees Gallery, upholds an authentic and organic feel, with bare stone walls, oak panelling and a flash of rich green marble, featuring its own private bar, entrance and art collection. Gees' Secret Garden provides an enchanting al fresco setting for delectable dishes and chic cocktails.

Free parking for two hours is available just a short walk away on Canterbury Road and Bevington Road.

An anniversary meal was noted and rewarded with two glasses of fizz on arrival. Service was present but not onerous and even when busy (as it became) we were still well attended too. Scallops were superb and I enjoyed a very pleasant in house burger.
    GeesResponded on June 24, 2025
Dear David, Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. We’re delighted to hear you chose to celebrate your anniversary with us — and that you enjoyed the experience from the welcome fizz to the attentive service throughout the evening. It’s wonderful to know the scallops and our in-house burger hit the mark. I’ll be sure to pass on your kind comments to the kitchen and front-of-house teams — it means a great deal to them. We hope to welcome you back again soon, whether for another special occasion or simply a great meal. Warm regards, Kristiyan Yanev, Restaurant Manager

We have been to Gees several times and have never been disappointed. However this time we were. The white wine we ordered did not come out of the fridge so it was warm. We had to change our selection as we were not prepared to drink warm wine. The side orders of food we ordered to go with our main dish did not come out. We were offered free desserts as a consequence but then they were added to our bill along with an almost £30 service charge. Both of which we asked to be removed. All in all, not what we were expecting from Gees. Attention to detail is definitely needed.
    GeesResponded on June 24, 2025
Dear [Paula, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re truly sorry to hear that your recent visit to Gees did not meet the standard you’ve come to expect from us. We completely understand your disappointment regarding the warm white wine, the missing side orders, and the incorrect billing of the desserts and service charge. These oversights are not reflective of the level of service and attention to detail we strive to deliver. Please accept our sincere apologies. Please accept our sincere apologies for the oversight and the inconvenience it caused. We have shared your feedback directly with our team to ensure this is taken seriously and steps are in place to prevent such lapses in the future. Warm regards, Kristiyan Yanev, Restaurant Manager

Been meeting friends here for Sunday Lunch for many years. The conservatory was far too noisy and staff did nothing to curtail it. Food was average. Expected a proper Sunday Roast. (chicken is not really that special). No longer good value for money. Unfortunately we will find another venue for our twice yearly lunches in the future. Many Thanks for previous good times.
    GeesResponded on July 7, 2025
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. I am terribly sorry to know that you did not enjoy your Sunday lunch with us. This is incredibly disheartening to read, especially as you no longer wish to carry on your bi-yearly tradition with us. Please be assured, we have taken your feedback onboard and will no longer be serving chicken as the Sunday Roast. The Glasshouse can get rather energetic when full. If the noise is a bit much for some diners, we do have alternative seating in our bar area or in out covered and heated terrace adjacent to the glasshouse, plus our Secret Garden for when the weather is on the up! I do hope that you will return to us in future, and we will be sure to provide you with the experience you have known us for! -Peter, Restaurant Manager

Lovely setting for good weather days. Express lunch good value but going on the main menu not much more expensive. All in all an enjoyable experience with visiting friends.

The ambience was lovely and our waitress was warm and friendly. However, before she took over the table we had to request for a pot of warm water for my elderly father thrice. I had also written a note explaining the dinner at Gees was a birthday celebration for my mother. Other restaurants in Oxford generally make the effort to bring a small cake to the table for the occasion but perhaps that's not something Gees provides? We were hoping for it to feel like a more 'special' experience. In the end, it felt more like an average, albeit expensive one.
    GeesResponded on June 20, 2025
Thank you for your recent visit and for sharing your experience with us. We're so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the ambience and that your waitress made you feel welcome — we’ll be sure to pass on your kind words. However, we’re truly sorry that the start of your meal was let down by the delay in attending to your father's request, and that your note about the birthday celebration didn’t receive the attention it deserved. We absolutely understand how important these small gestures are in making a special occasion feel memorable and apologies for missing out on this unfortunate oversight. We appreciate your honesty, and we hope to have the opportunity to offer you and your family a more special and seamless experience in the future. Warm regards, Kristiyan Yanev Restaurant Manager

The food at Gees was very good and the six of us had a wonderful lunch. However the discretionary service charge of 13.5% seemed a bit excessive.. We left a 10% tip but this was not greeted very well by the service staff. They completely ignored us when we left the table, which left us feeling very disappointed and we would not return.
    GeesResponded on June 20, 2025
Dear Louise, Thank you for your kind words about the food and your lunch with us. We’re very sorry that you felt ignored after leaving a tip. Tipping is always voluntary, and all guests deserve appreciation regardless. This does not reflect our service standards, and we will address it with the team. We value your feedback and hope you’ll consider visiting us again so we can provide the experience you deserve. Warm regards, Kristiyan Yanev Restaurant Manager

A place I hadn’t been to in 20 years. It used to be for quite a special occasion and felt special when you went there but that feeling has definitely diminished. Although the staff were lovely and friendly, the table was a squeeze for 6 of us. We had three courses and there was a good 30 mins between each one. The food was small portions and had no adornment. My father was a bit shocked with his asparagus starter which was just 4 spears of rather skinny asparagus and a small pot of clarified butter next to it - more like something you would serve at home. The octopus was nicely done and my son enjoyed the croquettes though. The mains were mediocre and again, a bit like something you would have at home - no nice presentation on the plate and it was the same with the puds. So all in all, an ok place to now visit but don’t go there if you are hoping for something special.
    GeesResponded on June 20, 2025
Dear Camilla, Thank you for returning to visit us after so many years and for sharing your honest feedback. We’re glad to hear you found our staff friendly and enjoyed some of the dishes like the octopus and croquettes. However, we regret that the overall experience did not feel as special as you remembered. We take your comments about portion size, presentation, and pacing seriously and will review these areas with our team. Your feedback helps us understand where we can improve, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you and your family back in the future and offer a more memorable experience. Warm regards, Kristiyan Yanev Restaurant Manager
