Gaylord's at Kilohana Ratings and Reviews
Simply the finest dining experience one can have on Kauai and, frankly, anywhere else one could go. We have eaten lunch here on several occasions during previous visits to the island but this was our first for dinner - it was beyond even our greatest expectations.
We have been coming to Gaylord's for many years. The food never disappoints but the service left a bit to be desired. Long wait in the bar area. We unfortunately seated ourselves too near the piano. When they played, we could no longer converse. Seemed to have lost some of its charm.
Staff knew it was our anniversary and sat us at what they felt was a private romantic table. It was private. Almost outside! Could have been romantic but there was a luau going on on the plantation property and the music and sounds were distracting. Service was very good. Food was plentiful and tasty but I was not overwhelmed. My short ribs were dry and my husband said his scallops were nothing special. The experience overall was very nice but I expected more.
After an initial issue with the hostess (that the manager addressed to our full satisfaction) my wife and I had a great dinner (as always). Drinks and wine were very good, food was wonderful and our waitress was very friendly, attentive and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
One fact to consider: on Thursday nights people from the cruise ship Pride of America attend the luau next door and some have dinner at the restaurant before. Those people fill up the restaurant and keep the wait and kitchen staff busy. It appears that the cruise ship crowd is gone by 6:30 pm. Dining after 6:30 is therefore a good option.
45 minutes from order to table. No fault of the server. My burger was well done when I asked for medium. My mother's fish tacos arrived as "fish of the day", but considering we didn't want to wait any longer, accepted our over cooked and wrong orders (her order was comped). Overall, an excellent restaurant with great ambiance, friendly and attentive wait staff, awesome Mai Tais, but the head chef needs a reality check.
The food was great, the service was slow. It took 40+ minutes to get our burger and fish tacos. We had allowed an hour for lunch prior to driving to the airport, causing us to have to scarf our food down in under 15 minutes. When we came for dinner a few days earlier, service was much faster, so we weren’t prepared for the long wait at a much less busy time.
I used to love going to Gaylord's when visiting Kauai. I feel that service and the quality of food has gone down hill over the last couple of years. After this past visit, I don't think I will go back. Will look for other brunch options on Kauai. I mentioned something and they really didn't seem to care. The setting is lovely, but service is lacking and better food can be had elsewhere.
Food presentation was beautiful, nice atmosphere . Disappointed that prime rib was not available on the evening we were there due to the luau. The Ahi is FANTASTIC both as appetizer an main course . YOU must get the Coconut pie. Waiter was new but we had a wonderful busboy. Should have used bug spray for the time of evening we were there. Been to Kauai many many times, first time at Gaylord's an we will go back, it is must. Glad we had reservations! Thank you Open Table!
Booked Sun brunch at Gaylord's. Food was OK but rather disjointed. Yogurt bar w/add-ons but no spoons. Buffet only for sides and lunch items. One "entree" item ie omelette, egg Benedict, etc. included. Veg omelette on entree w/only onion, tomato, peppers yet later learned sauteing mushrooms, zucchini, on station with short ribs and sirloin. Would have liked to have those as option for omelette. Service very poor, Ordered Bloody Mary bar at same time omelette, food came and was half gone before vodka arrived. It had obviously been sitting at the bar for some time since it was so watery. Dessert almost non-existent. Small donut holes w/cinnamon sugar and small cream puffs. That's it.... would not go back.
When we come to Kauai, we always go to Gaylord’s. It has really gone downhill since our last visit in Jsnusry. My wife wanted he filet, and asked our waiter Sam how much they cooked their medium rare. He said they had a professional cook and it would be medium rare. Either he was just impudent or didn’t know anything about cooking meat. I think his problem was both, including inexperience. That was the last time we saw him until he took dessert order, bus boy had to bring dessert menu. He said their fish was “oni”, not even knowing it was “ono”. Fish was over cooked, dry and burned from the grill. Dinner took almost 2 hours, lots of waiting. The table next to us took over 1 hour just to get appetizers. Gaylord’s used to be real good, but I won’t be returning. Also, weekend night but no music like they used to have.
An outstanding restaurant for Sunday brunch. Selection on buffet was exceptional plus they had an entree included of your choice. We’ve eaten here many times for lunch or dinner and have always enjoyed our meals. Best mai tai’s on the island. Don’t miss this one.
This was my second visit at Gaylord. I had to wait about 30min for the reserved table to be ready. Choice of wines in the card could be substantially improved for the same price. Food was great. The place is outstanding. Still a good value but there is better place.
I had the filet and it was done perfectly and it was delicious. My husband had the fish special and he thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Gaylord’s is outdoor porch seating which is private, but open, and romantic. We always come here when visiting Kauai and have never been disappointed.
Location is very nice but service and food was just a bit lacking. With the set TIP we felt staff just did not care to make sure our food was to our liking. I know we all have good and bad days so would be willing to try again before passing judgment for sure.
Could not find a hostess upon arrival, for our 7:30 PM reservation. Waited until someone came to the podium. We were asked to continue to wait as there were others who needed to be seated...we saw no one else waiting; so others must have been in the bar area. Our server, Gino was un-enthusiatic and not cordial or helpful with menu selections, felt like he was just putting in his time until closing. Busser was overly energetic in wanting to remove plates from which we were still eating and conversely careless in delivering the entree plates... My salad contained overripe and pulpy tomatoes and under ripe mango with a couple of specks of avocado. Crabcakes were basically institutional. The Ahi was delicious! Gaylord's has a nice setting but overrated for fine dining experience.
It was our last night on Kaua‘i. Gaylord’s fit what we were looking for...delicious food, romantic atmosphere, great service. My husband had Ahi and I had snapper. Food and presentation was wonderful. We had looked at the menu on line, and my husband spotted banana, coconut cream pie! He saved room for dessert and loved every decadent bite.
TL/DR: Nice location, but food is small, room temperature portions that also somehow managed to be of disappointingly low quality. Slow but friendly service. 1.5 stars.
Had lunch at Gaylord's after a rum tasting at Koloa. The ambience is nice and our server was very polite, but this place has major execution problems and inaccurate advertising. Perhaps it is excusable to have smaller lunch portions and claim slightly reduced prices, but that does not justify poor quality and menu descriptions that do not match the food.
We had the shrimp and scallop spring rolls, which ended up being one roll cut in half and filled primarily with overdone cabbage (one item does not qualify for a plural "s"). I ordered the catch of the day, which ended up being 3 ounces of fish accompanied by rice and vegetables. The "Asian style slaw" consisted of peppers and onions and the advertised mushrooms were not present.
My companion had the fish tacos, which were fine, alongside black beans from a can and cheese that had cooled and formed a skin on top.
Everything was served at room temperature, which is ironic given that we waited nearly an hour for our food. Overall, exceedingly disappointing for the price and reputation. One and a half stars.
The interior of the restaurant is U-shaped and open air on one side of each segment of the "U". In the middle of the U is an open air courtyard. The setting offers a soothing romantic atmosphere. We arrived early and unstressed at a time when the hostess was briefly away from her station. Several waiters and assistant waiters reassured me that the hostess would be available shortly.
We were seated early and had a great meal. The dessert was a perfect finish to our meal. The reviewer - but not the other three members of our group - found both the waiter and especially the assistant waiter - to be very attentive. I would have given both a "5". The rest of the party rated the waiter a "3" and the assistant waiter a "4". Those are undeservedly low ratings in my eyes.
All four of us have eaten at Gaylord's multiple times - in odd-numbered years when our timeshare is available - since 2003. We will return the next time.
The look and feel of the restaurant was great. Our waiter was okay, not exceptional. You'd think for an upscale place like this you'd at least get what you pay for. The waiter's assistant told us rolls were coming shortly after we took our seat. We were given ONE roll, with a tiny pad of butter for the two of us to share. No basket of rolls nor were we offered a second. The waiter recommended the prime rib so that's what we both ordered. It was extremely tough and I couldn't cut through it with the provided butter knife. I asked for a steak knife, and even then it was extremely tough. The garlic mashed potatoes were flavorless (could've used garlic, butter, and salt), and the asparagus was good. They do not provide salt and pepper at the table, you have to ask for it. Overall not great food and way overpriced for what you get.
This was the second time my sister and I have enjoyed Sunday brunch here. The food selection and quality was just as good as our first experience a couple of years ago. Kilohana is easy to get to and a lovely setting for Gaylord's with their covered outdoor dining. Two performers on the outdoor stage provided just the right amount of background music. Staff did not try to rush us and was attentive without being intrusive. We really enjoyed our excellent brunch and will return!
We were very disappointed with the food and ambience. I took my husband there to celebrate his 50th birthday. The food tasted like it was part of a buffet or for a mass gathering. While we were dining, there was a meeting going on which was distracting and ruined the ambience. Gaylord’s is like the Disneyland of Hawai’i.
My wife and I have visited Gaylord's each of the 3 times we have been to Kauai in the past 21 years. We have always looked forward to eating at Gaylord's. The setting is fantastic. The staff is very friendly. This time the food seemed mediocre, especially my wife's filet mignon. Maybe it's our age. But at home we have had outstanding meals for a comparable price. And the service was not up to par. The waitress apologize and said she was servicing most of the restaurant.
This a perfectly ok restaurant but cannot get enthused about it The menu ordinary and so is the preparation and the service. It's probably the best romantic restaurant in Lihue but that's it other than its a safe choice. Everything is ok. There is nothing to really complain about. Just no excitement. Sort of like kissing your sister. Eaten there twice now and the feeling was the same both time.
