GATSBY ON THE OCEAN
We got there at 5:30 on a Sunday. There was a crowd of people waiting to be sat. No hostess in sight and tons of open tables. We eventually got a table outside which was very nice but apparently there was confusion as to who our waitress/waiter would be. No one came for a long time. We finally said something and that person took our order then a 2nd person came to take our order, and then a 3rd different person. When the food came out apparently we ordered the same appetizer and the next table and they gave us theirs in error. Then they gave us ours later, luckily we were not charged twice. It took a long time for the main course to come and one waitress really went out of her way to help us but it seems she had indoor tables and was just not there when we needed things. They also have Velcro in the sides of the tables I am assuming to secure tablecloths so they don’t fly away but there were no tablecloths so if you lean your arm against the Velcro it either hurts the skin or pulls the cloth of your sleeve. The menu was very good. The food was actually very good but cold /lukewarm by the time we got it. It’s too bad because views are spectacular -this venue could be really good but clearly do not have it pulled together in the service department.
This place could be beautiful but they haven't put too much thought into it. Kind of a glorified cafeteria. Menu is limited. We ordered the chicken valdostana. Waitress said they didn't have any prosciutto for the dish, which was stated on the menu along with fontina cheese and fig jam. We ordered it anyway and it came with prosciutto but NO fontina or fig jam. Took forever. Not very professional although Charlotte was very sweet and tried to compensate for the shortcomings. We'll never go back .
Drove an hour to get there for a special birthday only to find out that the restaurant was closed for a private party despite the confirmation email with our reservation details received the day before.
The View was beautiful the service was excellent and the food was good better to get there during daylight to enjoy The View
Despite a beautiful day at the beach, dinner at GATSBY ON THE OCEAN was a huge disappointment. Reservations were made, accepted and recognized upon our arrival. After being seated to celebrate our 4th anniversary, it took 10 minutes before any server approached us to ask if our order was taken. We ordered drinks that arrived after a long wait and no one introduced themselves as our waiter. Another server took our order and, again, we waited a long time to be served; water; bread; appetizers entree took an inordinate amount of time to arrive and all, except the raw oysters, were disappointing. Bread was stale, butter was frozen, gin and tonic was too strong and the special martini was meh. All-in-all, the best part of the evening was leaving the restaurant and walking along the boardwalk. Eat elsewhere and then come to for the beach. 'Nuf said.
Food was good, portions were small. Service not so good. Hostess and staff tried their best, but it was obvious that this restaurant does not have it together yet. Took over an hour after ordering to get food. Got a drink when we sat down, but we were never able to order a second drink, not even a glass of water. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the band, so that was nice. It does have potential.
Would have preferred to be seated by the window, especially since we had s 2:30 luncheon reservation for 5 and the restaurant was virtually empty. Otherwise it was a pleasant experience and I would go back again.
Place was loud and not inviting. Outside for lunch was much better. Very loud inside. Needs some decorator touches. I felt like i was in a cafeteria
Raw clams were dry, steak was overcooked. Mussels were very good.
We’ve been there a few times. The food is good however the service is pretty slow. Very nice wait staff. Great views
We were there on a Thursday night and we had arrived early so there weren't a lot of people there. The server was not attentive at all and the food was just so so. If it weren't for the view we would have been terribly disappointed. Don't think we will go back.
Went for dinner before a concert at Jones beach. Service was slow, but drinks (a bit pricey) and food were very good. Hoping they step up their service bc the place could be great! Beautiful views. Will try again in a few months, was told they are in process of remodeling. Would like to see finished product.
Yes I would. Please enjoy a relaxed lunch. The service is very relaxed but good. The $9 menu is a real deal. We enjoyed the wines we had and the lobster roll was exceptional.
This restaurant has a beautiful view of the beach and water . The building was renovated and is absolutely stunning with its high ceiling. Food was good but has a limited menu. The service was fine but a little slow .?parking costs $25 dollars but the voucher you receive is valid toward your bill.
Don’t waste your time.:dry food and raw hamburger (asked for med well). Sever was friendly. Thought it was odd staff and manager were eating at the bar while customers were still seated at tables.
The restaurant was very busy and we arrived a little late for our reservation and had to wait at the bar for our table. We were in a bit of a hurry because we were going to a concert after dinner. The manager Elyse came over and asked if we needed anything. We told her about our situation and she took great care of us! It was the most delicious fast food we ever had! We love this restaurant and will be back again and again.
The restaurant is both good and bad. The food we had was very good - we ordered clams on the half shell and the antipasto for two which is very good for 4 people as well. There should have been more crostini with the antipasto but the selection was very good. For main courses we had two burgers, a lobster roll, and penne with sausage and broccoli rabe. All were very good, although one of the burgers was way overcooked.
The downside of this lovely restaurant, which has been lovingly restored from its origins in 1929, is the service. We had reservations for 4 people at 5pm, and had to wait almost 30 minutes to be seated. The server we had was often awol, and did not attend to our needs, which were very modest. Considering the prices, which are towards the high side, the service should be much better.
Food and ambience were great but service was very slow . Need more staff .
I have to say the food was good. The waitress was overwhelmed not enough help! Generally seemed a bit disorganized the decor is bland. It is suppose to be the era of GATSBY but does not feel that way they need some shimmer and shine. Florals would be nice too. We ordered coffee and the waitress came after what seemed like a long time and apologized that they were out of coffee! Seriously need to hire experienced restaurant manager. The view is however beautiful but you could bring your own food and eat on the outdoor deck and enjoy it. Just disappointed by the experience why can’t Jones ever get a decent restaurant it’s been a problem forever.
Food and view were great! Service was good but it took an exceptionally long time to get our food. Restaurant was like a hallway with the public walking through the dining room to get to the other side. Plastic glasses? Why?
Great food. Attentive service. Will be back! Loved the walk on the Boardwalk and the sunset afterward!
I have had a a stomach flu since Saturday night. The service was not good . I made a reservation but asked if I could sit outside everyone seemed annoyed I went for our anniversary and was very disappointed . There was something going on, not enough help or kitchen staff don’t know.
We sat outside and there was a super fun band. That definitely made the experience. The inside looks like they are still furnishing it. There is an incredible amount of potentials based on the size of the location and the fact it’s right on the beach with amazing ocean views. The menu is decent. The food was good. Would like some more options. The drinks were very good! Espresso Martini was good and the rose pour was generous! Will go back.
loved it - fabulous kind service...DELICIOUS! Will be returning this Friday :)
$25 parking charge, although applied to dinner bill is off-putting
Lovely venue with stunning views. Attentive staff. Food was very good. We noticed lobster rolls were generously served along we enticing hamburgers. Had great pasta.
There is potential. Place feels cold . Too much open space . No plants or trees inside the restaurant and very minimal decor. The ceiling is so high they should have the place filled with trees. Not very welcoming. However the service was excellent. Our waitress was fantastic and she did say that it is all a work in progress and they welcome suggestions...The menu needs some work. The food is mediocre. The weather was bad so we sat indoors. Windows are high so you can’t see the ocean when seated at a table. Being outside would be the place to be for the ocean/pool view. I’ll definitely check back next year.
THE VIEW FROM THE RESTAURANT- THE DECOR FOR BOTH THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE WAS VERY PRETTY AND TIMELY FOR ITS NAME GATSBY. PERHAPS BECAUSE IT WAS MONDAY AND QUITE BUSY THE SERVICE WAS EXCEPTIONALLY SLOW AND THE FOOD WAS MOSTLY MEDIOCRE. IF THE FOOD AND SERVICE WOULD IMPROVE , THE GATSBY, COULD BE EXTRAORDINARY.IT WAS OF VERY FEW WITH AN OPEN VIEW OF THE BEACH AND OCEAN.
This is actually a maybe. No ambiance except for view out ocean-facing window. Spotty service. Food was actually pretty good. Fee to park ($25) was ridiculous, although it was applied to cost of food.
The room was large, barn like, loud with an echo. Maybe carpeting would help.
The food and service were fair at best.
We tried it for the location on the beach, had seating by the windows, but there was a significant fog out this past Saturday night.
It was a nice dinner ,the view is very nice.May I suggest playing some music from the Gatsby era & maybe have the waiters & waitresses dressed more like those days .Our waiter was ok I saw much friendlier ones there. He was not very knowledgeable of drinks which were not many on the menu . Al & all nice.
Food was good but you can’t beat the view . Great burger with sweet potato fries!
Honestly, I would not return to Gatsby again. For a party of 10 on a quiet Sunday afternoon the service and food was poor.
The buns on the burgers were thick and not toasted, the salads were uninspiring and there should have been a bread basket. The waiter brought the right order but to the wrong person, the fries were tepid. The dessert order was wrong and the kitchen didn't have a candle. The food needed more seasoning. The table wasn't totally cleared from lunch to dessert. The atmosphere was ok.
Gatsby has definite potential. Right now is too much like a large cafeteria. It needs some softness with plants and possibly a low and or upolstered border wall to designate the eating area from the walking through area. That would also help with noise. It feels like it should be more upscale. Great beach views.
Great to see a nice restaurant on the ocean at Jones Beach.. Given that Gatsby's has been open for only a short time, it makes sense that there will be a few kinks that need to be worked out... Overall, it was a great experience and the food was very, very good..
A few minor bumps include not having enough bar service, and so, even an order for a glass of house wine took much longer that it should, there seemed to be confusion with hostesses sending people to the same table, orders being sent to the wrong tables, none of which would be a deal breaker for a return visit. Servers were very professional and clearly are trying their best to give the guest a great experience. Unfortunately, the noise level is not good at all and requires some remedy. Most likely we will see a carpet installed at some point that should take care of it.
Everyone at our table of four enjoyed their food and are looking forward to next time.. Congratulations and best wishes for success at Gatsby's on the Ocean! Welcome to Jones Beach
Waitress friendly, but Service extremely slow outside. Took 20 minutes to get a drink. Food ok.
The view and food was really good services was good but new. The ambiance could use some help the reservation system was not great
Nice for lunch and viewing the ocean. Three of us had the Cobb salad which was good but the chef forgot to add the avocado which was brought to us after we told the server of the mistake. Drinks were good as well. For a venue only 3 months running, the service was attentive. As for decor, the room definitely needs more. A few more super blown up photos on canvas from the past would work well on some of the blank walls to add to the smaller photos behind the bar. Do hope that Gatsby does well and will continue to improve as time passes.
Food was very good but overpriced. A menu between $15 and $25 would be more suitable for a beach restaurant
We walked out. Waited an hour for 2 burgers. No one cared. Many people left. The hostesses don’t know how to hostess. The waiters don’t care. We had to ask for water after 20 minutes. Won’t be back
