Gather Ratings and Reviews
Location is not the whole story, although it is a plus in many contexts. Having not been there in years I was pleasantly surprised at how good Gather has become. The menus is diverse and interesting and the food is excellent, especially given that proximity to campus does not typically inspire culinary aspirations
food was very good, as usual. the service was slow, and at times a bit inattentive, also as usual in my experiences there. i was surprised that was the case on this occasion because the restaurant was not busy. the food will likely bring me back to gather again - just love the kale salad!
Maybe we hit Gather on an off-night. The guys had pizzas and we women both ordered the halibut, with bruschetta and salads to start. No problem with the starters, but we had been seated 45 minutes and were risking missing our curtain time before the waitperson told us that the pizza oven wasn't working. When the food came, the pizzas were rated good, though toppings included corn and both were undercooked, but it was simply a crime to slather fresh halibut in eggplant and vegetable purees. The restaurant is large and comfortable and quiet ( a real plus if you would like to talk with friends), but the meal was disappointing.
Brunch: French toast was super sweet. Toasted walnuts added a pleasant crunch and contrast to the toast, which was basically cinnamon bread. Good quality bacon, smiley but not overly salty. Eggs Benedict yummy.
great outdoor dining patio.
Friendly and welcoming staff.
Overall this was a very nice dinner. It is true that the menu is quite limited but the preparations and presentation were really outstanding. We came for an early dinner before a show at Berkeley Rep so were able to eat outside in their pleasant patio. Inside the volume would have been too high as there are a lot of hard surfaces and tables are relatively close together. Fritto misto vegetables were tremendously light, crisp and flavorful. Chicken and vegan dinners were very good. Wine list is short but there was something for everybody. Happy with the water service and overall attentiveness. Homemade gelato slightly sweet but good and cappuccinos were very well made too. We would return.
I have eaten lunch at Gather many times and it has always been pleasurable experience. It's in a convenient location and the restaurant is very comfortable and very nicely decorated. The service is always accommodating and attentive. I do wish they would change the lunch menu or add some specials occasionally since it has been the same menu for many years.
Four of us went for a leisurely birthday lunch. Our waiter came right away. We ordered two pizzas and two salads to share. All items were at our crowded table within 5 minutes. Way too rushed! Our waiter didn't ask if we wanted salad first, but we expected a restaurant of Gather's reputation to pace our service leisurely. Pizzas and salads were delicious, but we all agreed that we might not return due to service.
We went there with friends. One of the items my friend wanted from the menu was not available. I wanted to have a glass of Pinot Noir. They had 3 choices on the menu and only one was offered by the glass and they were out of it. So it was a little disappointing, but the pizza we ordered was good.
This was my fourth visit to Gather, so obviously I like the place. However, it was the first time I ordered a handcrafted cocktail, and the last. The salt n peppa rita was so hot my mouth was on fire the whole meal, and I could hardly taste my food. From now on I'm staying away from the handcrafted list.
The vegan pizza was too salty and creamy, but the attempt was valiant! The food was fine, the cocktails delicious and the ambiance lively. Screaming children behind us tried to threaten our time, but they couldn't ruin it. The wait staff was exceptional, attentive, and friendly, and the area is great. Walk to the Pacific Film Archive after! Healthy options made us feel less guilty about a decadent brunch!
I recently went low carb and low sugar, so I ordered the kale salad to share and the burger, no bun with a salad, not fries. I was disappointed that the burger came with no tomatoes and no pickles. The server borught me a pickle upon request, so that was nice.
However, the burger was delicious and cooked to perfection. The cheese was a nice touch too.
Next time, I will order the mussels.
The staff let us in even before they opened so we could be in out of the heat. We were treated promptly and Danny, our server, was the right amount of attentive. Of course, the food was delicious and the ambience is friendly. Thank you so much for an all around wonderful experience!
Admittedly, I have avoided Gather because of the noise level INSIDE. However, my guest and I ate OUTSIDE and that was great! Service was absolutely top notch. Food was delish except that there were too many mushrooms on the pizza. But we really enjoyed everything about it!
This was our first time back at Gather in about two years. The main reason why there is only 3 stars for the food was that our kale salad looked like it came out of a can, not real appetizing, very soggy in texture. On the other hand, our guest had plenty of choices for her gluten-free needs, and our main course and dessert (halibut and the Halvah Sundae) were excellent, but the less-than-fresh-looking kale was the first impression for my wife and me, and it wasn't a good one. Even our guest commented that the kale didn't look fresh. A different salad plate would have been a solution (our guest had the beet salad, which looked marvelous, and she said it was as tasty as it was beautiful). Service was top-notch from our server, and they didn't rush us out of there, since there were open tables on a weeknight. My wife and I will be back, but we'll opt for a different salad course next time.
The current iteration of this popular downtown eatery is maintaining its place as a go-to spot for casual lunch or dinner. Ingredients are excellent, flavors bright, technique solid (if simple), with capable service, and mature ambience. The value proposition is perhaps a bit off, given the range of choices in the market today, but the location might make up for that for most.
We chose Gather based on its reputation for local and healthy food, and its location was convenient for a trip to Berkeley. We ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and the kale salad. The grilled cheese was ok but not exceptional. The kale salad was dreadful. Essentially, it is not kale salad. It is a huge mound of kale leaves (not even cut into bite-size pieces) that have been cooked - maybe boiled? - and then chilled. I could taste lemon but I couldn't really identify any other dressing flavor. There were a few chunks of nice roasted carrots and a few pumpkin seeds and a small sprinkling of cheese. I went back later and checked reviews and noted that other diners had the same issue - I guess I should have read all the reviews. It seems like an attractive restaurant and the service was good. Just don't order the kale salad.
Lovely dinner at Gather. After several years, it seems settled into itself, with a good combination of inventive vegetarian options and some meat for the meat-eaters. Service is friendly and correct; dishes can be a little slow coming out, but worth the wait.
The food was good we had tapas and chicken and it was all tasty, service ok too. The problem was acoustics - the restaurant was very noisy and it was just people talking to each other - no music or other disturbance. It was so noisy we really didn't feel like staying any longer than we had too. One of our party pitied the staff who had to work in that environment an entire shift. Not everyone cares about this as much as we do but because of the noise we would not eat there again. I strongly suggest a sound engineer to fix the acoustics.
We love Gather for its farm-to-table approach and ingenious combinations. They serve some of the most innovative vegetarian food we have ever enjoyed. The service is friendly, helpful, delightful. Overall great vibe, exceptional food! Try the chickpea panisse!
