Food could be better. Service was good.
We enjoyed everything about our night out at Gates. Highly recommend!!
good menu, good food, meatballs were excellent, took off stir fry which was good, great place
Was not what I expected..dining area bare..bar area seemed more decorated..service excellent waiter in top of things
Just found it a blah place
We all enjoyed our Sunday brunch. Excellent Bloody Mary and my slow cooked eggs benedict was very enjoyable. I have been going to Gates for nearly 40 years and it's nice to see things are still high caliber.
Excellent as usual for our Friday night family treat.
Nice and not crowded. Waitress was very good
Always a great spot in New Canaan. Love their brunch!!
The Gates was a great restaurant and we will definitely go back but will make sure we’re not put across from the very noisy pin ball machine!
Our food was very good!
New Years Day brunch
Great food, good space, fun atmosphere.
Weekly family outing. Perfect as usual.
Great food, good prices, nice environment for a lovely Sunday brunch.
From the moment we entered the restaurant we were greeted with indifference. From checkin tobeing seated, to taking our order we were felt like it was us inconveniencing them. They took my daughter's order and waited about 20 mins before they came back to take our order, mind you they took our drink order which didn't come for 20+minutes. When they finally came back, it was someone different, we placed our order, 2 entrees plus an appetizer. Probably another 30+ minutes no food, at this point over an hour there no food, only one drink. My daughter's food was served somewhere in the 30-40 minute range. When our food comes out, you guessed it, no appetizer, so we canceled it. They did the right thing and offered us another round, but that's the least they could do, waiting over an hour, no hospitality, two sets of silverware absolutely filthy & disgusting.
To top it off, when we asked for the check the waitress made it a point to make sure we were aware that they comp'd 2 glasses of wine as if they were doing us some sort of favor....terrible service, horrible entitled attitudes across most of the staff. The exception is the owner or manager who was very polite and offered the round of drinks, but overall a bad experience...
Food was very tasty, however it took a very long time for it to be served.
It was very cold inside, we all sat with our jackets on and it made our hot food cool off too fast.
The food and service were excellent, the street was like a European bistro setting. parking, however is at a premium, we had to find a spot a block away, luckily it was an nice fall weather evening.
Service is very slow, but the food is delicious!
We tried Gates again due to an article in a recent issue of a local magazine. In the past, we have
eaten in the bar area and enjoyed their salads. On our last visit, we sat in a cavernous booth in the
main dining room which lacked good lighting and warm ambience. The food and service were
good, but not sure that we would opt to eat in the same room again.
Had friends in town and wanted a place that gave lots of options for family dining. They loved it.
The food was great and the service was very good. However, in the middle of dinner the band started playing in the bar and the noise level was terrible. Conversation was almost impossible.
Love the vibes of this restaurant, especially a fan of the live music on Saturday's. Our dining experience was great! We started with calamari which was decent. I split the tavern cheese burger and tomato mozzarella salad with my mom which and we were not disappointed. The burger was a mix of short rib, chuck, and brisket and it practically melted in my mouth, truly one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. My aunt had the gates salad with salmon which she said was very good. For dessert, our table split the warm chocolate chip cookie and tres cream cake and both were amazing. Our only complaint was the service we received. We waited a long time for our drink order to be taken and were spoken to as if we were inconveniencing our server throughout the evening.
Good place for casual lunch. Chef Luis Piccadilly’s salad is great!
Took a day trip with the Mrs down to New Canaan to celebrate our anniversary. Saw good reviews about this place, booked a reservation for lunch via OpenTable and after eating there wholeheartedly agree. Located off a side street in downtown NC, Gates was a really nice place to have lunch. We were greeted and seated right away - good start. I'm a big craft beer guy, they had a small but very good selection on draft plus another dozen or so bottles - good start #2! We decided on the shrimp quesadillas as an app which were delicious - served with pico, quac & sour cream. For lunch, I had the chicken burger & the Mrs had the veggie burger. Both sandwiches were flavorful - heck I forgot I was eating chicken! Now for the topper. We were all set to leave when the staff came out with 2 flutes of champagne, strawberries and a warm baked chocolate chip "pie" covered with vanilla ice cream. That was so unexpected and nice! I remembered when the reservation asked if it was for a special occasion, I just wrote "anniversary" not thinking anything of it. It was such a nice surprise.
So if you are looking for a place with very good food, good beer selection and very nice people, I'd recommend to anyone. We hope to be back next time we're down that way.
The food was very good and the menu had interesting choices and options.
Selection is decent and the atmosphere is pretty good. I've been three times and the service is always the least desirable thing about the place.
Our first time dining, but we will definitely be back. We liked sitting outside. Food and service were great, as were our drinks. Very cute and lively.
Delicious tacos! We both tried different taco platters — blackened chicken & pork belly — and they were soooo good! The grapefruit cocktails were yummy.
Love the new menu
The manager handled a dispute on the check SO POORLY. terrible service. Delicious food.
Food is OK if basic menu. Service seems to be getting more and more off-hand in approach.
First time at The Gate. We thought the Lobster Hash was excellent.
Food was terrific, service was fine but the food was really slow to arrive. The kitchen must have been backed up as we waited far too long for both our apps and entrees to arrive. Otherwise a very nice evening with good service overall.
Not very crowded at all but we had to wait over 45 minutes for food to come out. Fortunately the baby was patient and held out. Noted in reservation that we were there for a birthday but no dessert or any celebration. Waiter actually commented that the food only took 10 minutes more than average to come out.... rude and unacceptable. My wife's steak was also cold.
I used to love the Gates but somthing has changed and I will never go back. The menu had no direction and the food came out lacking. For one, the calimari was drowned in red sauce and was not as described on the menu. The server greeted us with a "the kitchen closes in at 15 minutes" and he did not check back in or clear dirty plates. By the time dessert came, which was the only good thing in the menu, we realized that two different songs were playing (one song on the speaker and on from the kitchen) at once and the server was scarce and when he did pass by he made it seem like he purposefully did not make eye contact with us.
Horrible. Food took forever. Noisy.
Love this restaurant
Grood spit Ktitchen was a little slow, but overall good food, service, and atmosphere.
We enjoyed a great lunch at Gates. The lunch menu has something for every taste. The salad I had was fresh and flavorful with a delicious, light dressing. The wood-fired pizza was the perfect accompaniment. Service was efficient and professional. Highly recommended!
Food was absolutely amazing! Not ideal for a date night with so many small children.
We had our son’s 4th Birthday dinner at Gates this evening! The kids menu is awesome and has soooo many great choices including apples and carrot slices along with things like french fries. Our waitress was awesome and couldn’t have been more attentive. They also allowed us to bring in a cake without any charge. I had a tuna poke bowl over cauliflower rice and it was great! We are sooo happy Chef Louis is back and will definitely be coming back often with our family and friends!
