We frequent Gates often, love it there especially with our kids, bolognese needs a little more spice but food is generally very good.
Restaurant was almost empty when we arrived so hard to tell noise level if full. Food was adequate, not great or terrible. I would say good comfort type food. I had salmon which should have been medium but was cooked more than that so very dry. The Mac and cheese was super loaded with cheese sauce but tasty. Pizza looked good
Service was very good so I would recommend for a local dinner but not anything special.
The old Gates was better.for lunch
salad bar uninteresting
Moderate review as it is a casual, local place. Kind of noisy with families, so if you have kids, this is for you. Service was ok, and food also ok
Lovely cozy place with great rolls, homemade strawberry butter, and healthy options too. The quinoa bowl was amazing.
The service has improved which was a main reason we had stayed away for a while. The bar area is very nice to eat and hang around in. However, the main dining area has changed over the years. The pizza bar are has been enclosed which takes away from the open feel of the restaurant. The lighting was rather bright for a Friday evening dinner. It seems as though the space is not sure what it is supposed to be. I would turn the lights down, get rid of the mobile salad bar and open up the kitchen again. The original feel in that room used to be good. I would bring it back to what it was when they opened the new venue. Food was good though.
The fish tacos were dry. The Brussels sprouts and chicken dumplings were great!
Been several times for brunch, it is always good. The service was excellent and they accommodate vegans which is a plus.
Bland food and disengaged service. Wine came after appetizer. Tasteless salad was not finished before entrees were left unceremoniously in the table. Chicken and shrimp dishes were both over cooked and bland at the same time. When we looked into the open kitchen we saw an unhappy staff that appeared unhappy to be there Very disappointing experience.
Good menu variety from burgers to salads to ribs, fish and chips, etc. Great kids menu.
Varied and interesting menu. Food is very good. Very good value.
Went for valentines with husband and teenage kids. Great food great atmosphere. Completely renovated and food is delicious. Was closed for a bit during renovation but now up and running and really terrific.
A great place to take people for brunch if you happen to have a mix of vegetarian, vegan and meat eating friends. Everyone was happy with what they ordered and that is rare with this diverse crowd of 8 people.
Enjoyed a lovely Sunday brunch at Gates' recently. Great brunch choices on the menu and some interesting drink selections. Service was attentive and friendly. New decor is attractive, but dining chairs are not super comfortable -- I understand they will be replaced soon. Good idea! Once of the nicer brunch destinations in the area for sure!
Have to get used to the new Gates....but overall still a neighborhood gem...
Enjoyed my brunch with a friend here on a Sunday early afternoon. The food was well-prepared and tasty and it was relaxing to sit and talk.
I have been going to Gates my whole life so the new layout is jarring. I need to go again to decide if I like it. It was cold near the door - it is more open now.
The service was good and everyone that came to our table was pleasant and professional but it feels like they are brand new again after reopening.
Very good food and service
Gates is a steady, comfortable place. The latest visit included 2 6 year old grandchildren. They were welcomed and enjoyed the experience
Food was good although calamari was slightly chewy. Service was quick.
This is a very solidly good choice for dinner in New Canaan. There is a really diverse menu so lots of options for everyone's taste. We came for an easy family dinner the day before Christmas when we didn't want to cook at home. The service is really good (they're all very nice) and they bring out the food really quickly. Not mind-bogglingly good but really delicious and they have just as many comfort food options as healthy food. Lots of choices for vegetarians too.
Lunch with an old friend at Gates (we knew the previous Gates well)...
We were in the open dining area. Food was fine. Service was fine.
We were lamenting the personal ambience of the past...but we are "old", so what do we know?
We have been to the restaurant a few times. Service is a little slow so one should allow time to catch a train and such. Te people are wonderful and very helpful. We are gluten free and miss the bread but these guys do wonders with alternatives. Omeletes were delicious. We will definitely go back
We had a chance to dine at the renovated Gates restaurant recently and were very happy with our experience. The atmosphere is upscale casual, very family friendly and the menu has a wide variety of choice. Our calamari appetizer was tender and very lightly breaded, our burgers were delicious and cooked as ordered (the meat mix is awesome!) and the wines by the glass were reasonable. This will definitely be a regular stop for us when we are looking for a casual and friendly lunch or dinner.
Solid quality food with ok service. Nice ambiance with new chef. Great desert.
The ambiance was nice, fire in the pizza oven, service was excellent and waiters and bus boys very friendly and exceptional. Very family oriented with lots of very young children in high chairs. The food was pricey for what we got, small portions. Bread in basket very small. It was nice they leave bottle
Of water on table and pour it. We left hungry and it was overpriced for what u get. Would not return
Good spot foe adults or families, with a nice buzz in the restaurant. Beet appetizer was delicious. Great kids menu if you bring the family.
Wow! Haven't been here in a while. Nicely decorated inside. Great menu and our server was awesome. Loved the rib eye and the short ribs. We'll be back!
Great night at Gates, good food, great large table for 8 people to catch up.
Gates has been renovated which is nice but the place is much noiser than it was before - and it was noisy before. You can now watch the cooks works which is interesting - they were working fast. I did go on a particularly busy Friday night.
My recent visit to gates was great from start to finish. The server was friendly and attentive, but allowed us to enjoy our meals without interruption. The tuna appetizer was delicious as was the hummus. My friend had the chop chop verona with chicken and she enjoyed it. We also had the statler chicken- it was out of this world! The steaks were also very good and cooked perfectly. Definitely a great spot in the heart of New Canaan- can't wait to return.
The food was quite good but it took a long time to get the appetizers and then the entrees came while we were still eating the appetizers. Given that the restaurant was almost empty on a Sunday night, it is surprising that the timing was so off.
We wanted good food at a value price with excellent service, and that's what we got. My brother and his wife were impressed and everyone had a great time!
The food is very good and the ambiance is great. The advice however still tends to be a bit suspect. We have been here three times now and service keeps popping up as something hey need to work on. It ranges from delayed service to forgetting items asked for.
Service very good. 3 of us had salads which all agreed was absolutely delicious.
I would definitely return to try other items on the menu.
"I love the relaxed feel of this place and the chicken was amazing "
Great Manager and Bartender as well!
This is the first time in many years I have been back to Gates and I really enjoyed it as I have in the past. The service was excellent and the staff overall were very helpful. I left my sweater on the chair and a waiter noticed it as I was making my way out the door and handed it to me. I really appreciate that.
The food was excellent as was the atmosphere. Overall, it was a great luncheon experience. I would definitely visit Gates again and encourage my friends to stop by as well.
The restaurant was very quiet for a saturday night. perhap because it is summer vacation time. Our server was responsive and attentive. The food was fairly good, the short ribs were well seasoned and very tender, the Gates salad was not as good as we remember it from previous visits. The cosmopolitan was good, well prepared and very cold.
this was our first time with the new decor, a little cold and austere for our taste but it may appeal to the younger crowd.
Bartender had problems with beer choices. Did not have three listed. Bolognes was wonderful!
The service and food at Gates were great! Everyone was friendly, and the food came quickly. It is a bit pricey, so next time I would save it for a nice occasion.
