We have been to Gary's on several occasions. All very good - but this last visit. Service was exceptionally bad for a restaurant of this quality. It was apparent that the young man was overwhelmed with the number of tables he was tasked to handle. Drinks were slow, and wrong. Ordering was very slow in coming. Food was good, but steak overcooked. The cook came out to address issues (several other tables had similar complaints). We truly feel this whole experience was due to the management's lack in preparing our young waiter properly. He was a very pleasant young man, and it was clear he was trying to do his best. The cook actually called him to the table as we were trying to explain our issues. It put that poor fellow on the spot. It was was very embarrassing for him and uncomfortable for us. The cook then said they probably need more waiters - we told him we believed this to be a management issue and then left. Our waiter will most probably be excellent when he is properly trained and experienced. No restaurant of this caliber should allow an employee to go into his/her duties without fully preparing them.
Food, quality, quantity & presentation were perfect. Service was top notch. All in all it was a most enjoyable evening.
The food was amazing and the menu had a very good selection. Our server was helpful and very nice throughout the entire meal. We will be returning to Gary’s soon!
What I appreciate most at Gary's on Spring is the ambience. We asked for an out of the way table and we're given a quiet table in an alcove that was perfect. Lovely food, sweet wait staff, and good wine. Perfect.
This was our 2nd time out to Garys and we will be back again as they did not disappoint. We are from out of town and only make it once a year or so. Food was excellent from start to finish. Food service and dinning experience were great.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a longtime. Perfect place for a date night, anniversary, or large group.
Gary's is one of our favorite restaurants. The food and service has always been great. Another plus is the noise level is low and you can actually have a conversation with the people at your table without shouting.
I've been here before, and I was very impressed. However, we went for Valentines Day, and I was very disappointed. While the menu was beautiful, the service and food were disappointing. I ordered the shrimp and grits with redeye gravy. The shrimp was to be wrapped in country ham. However, when it arrived, 2 of the shrimp were wrapped in country ham. The other two seemed like they were wrapped in a ground sausage (not what I was expecting). Further, the red eye gravy was replaced with a sweet bbq sauce-which I wouldn't have ordered had I known it came with bbq sauce, as opposed to gravy. My partner ordered the potato encrusted grouper. While the edges were quite tasty, nearly half of the grouper was raw on the inside, which made the rest of the entree unappetizing and the fish unedible. Our service was hit or miss, and really failed to meet the basic expectation of attentive service-which most would expect at a restaurant of this caliber.
Jim did a great job and made great menu suggestions!
I went there for a Valentine's dinner with my significant other. We ordered a bottle of pinot noir and the server served my boyfriend a taste, and not me. When my boyfriend said he liked it, he began pouring us both glasses without regard to my preference. At one point, he knocked the silverware off the table at the adjoining table. His face was bright red and he was dripping sweat through the entire dinner, appearing to be intoxicated. At the end, instead of putting the check at the center of the table or asking who would like to pay, he simply handed the check directly to my boyfriend. In retrospect, I should have insisted on paying and left the jerk a $0 tip. He was sexist and offensive, and this type of behavior is unacceptable at a restaurant like this. Furthermore, I found my meal downright unpleasant. This was the worst dining experience I have had at a restaurant in this price range, and I will not return.
Another perfect night at Gary’s. This restaurant is wonderful. It’s a must try!
Bar is cozy and inviting with a great and friendly bar staff. I recommend the Cucumber Martini...very refreshing and easy going.
Never had a bad meal here. Food, server, staff all great!
This is the second time I have tried this restaurant and not gotten service of any sort other than water. The first time it was just a table of two and after 20 minutes we decided to leave and the manager called and apologized and said they were short on staff. I understand these things happen so we decided to try it again and booked a table for six with friends a couple months later. Our friends arrived before us and had waters but after 20 minutes they hadn’t been offered a drink either. After we arrived and also waited ten more minutes without so much as a check in that they would be getting our drink orders soon we decided to leave. After being embarrassed to bring our guests and not get any service. My boyfriend asked the bartender for the manager and he got smart with him which made the entire experience worse. We left and went to another restaurant (Brenden’s on 4th St) and got amazing service and food. We tried this place twice and the food smells amazing (although I saw the woman behind us send her meal back which gave me pause) and the atmosphere is quaint but that does nothing for you if the service sucks. I blame this on management, terrible, understaffed management. This is my first review... not much on calling people out but this was an awful experience times two.
This experience could have been great, but it was just OK. The service was subpar, the
Sorry to report--Grouper inedible--old taste with too much crust; egg plant very bland; oysters Rock. not good. The oysters were not fresh. Lobster bisque was good except for the small pieces (2) of lobster were so old they were bitter. Our server, Treven was good. He could not compensate for the bad food. Very disappointing. We are discerning but not hard to please.
My boyfriend and I decided to try Gary's for dinner after the U of L game. It was a location that was easy to access and avoid a lot of traffic. We met another couple there that said they used to be regulars. It was moderately busy when we arrived but not full. We were able to find a parking place near the door.
After placing our drink orders, it took quite some time for them to arrive. While our waiter was friendly he was also new to Gary's. He brought out a bottle of wine and brought the wrong one. Then we waited again. I had ordered a Hendricks and tonic when we placed the wine order. When he arrived with the correct bottle of wine, I still had not received my cocktail. I had to remind him.
However, food came out in a timely manner after we placed our orders. I shared the oysters rockefeller with my boyfriend. I thought they were really good. My boyfriend didn't care for them because they were really heavy with onion. I do agree with that statement, but fortunateIy, I like onion.
For the entree, I got there beef filet. Cooked very nicely to my liking. Very tender. However, the rest of the plate was overkill. Presentation was a mess. I couldn't really even identify what it was. Piped whipped potatoes I think, but they were somewhat gray in color. Tasted a little like vinegar. My plate was swimming in what tasted like burnt soy. Something else was on the plate that I cant even describe.
My boyfriend had the scallops pasta special. Three scallops swimming in a bowl of sauce. More sauce than pasta. It actually looked like a bowl of soup. He was very disappointed. Again, poor presentation as well.
While this was certainly not the worst experience we have ever had dining out, there are just too many really GREAT places to eat in this town. The selections are endless. Unfortunately, this one just didn't make our list.
Enjoyed our evening at Gary's.Food was wonderful, service was even better.Five stars.
My husband & I needed a place to have dinner before heading to a play in Downtown Louisville. We found Gary's on Spring and are happy we did. The service for wonderful...friendly, fast, and accommodating. Our meals: the chicken special, and swordfish were very good. We certainly will return during our next trip to Louisville. On our next visit we hope we will be seated in the lst floor dining room rather than the upstairs bar area - much quieter!
We love Gary's! The food is fun and delicious. It was prepared perfectly. Jennifer was our server. She was delightful. Impeccable service. Can't wait to visit again!
This is one of our favorite "go to" spots. We brought out of town guests and sat upstairs in the bar area. Food was great and we were thrilled when live music (acoustic guitarist) started soon after we were seated. Our guests really enjoyed the restaurant.
Look forward to a repeat visit very soon!
We had a great time at Gary's celebrating a birthday. The setting was perfect for a festive dinner. The bartender was absolutely fantastic - great drinks and he took the time to stop by our table. We will be back.
Great live music, delicious food and first rate service.
Excellent service from the moment our host opened the door. Delicious, well prepared food and yummy desserts, particularly the strawberry shortcake, in January no less. Our server Jim is a true professional.
My daughter’s 28th Birthday...
This was my 1st time at Gary's on Spring and it was a delightful evening. It was New Years Eve and we had reservations thankfully. My date had oysters rockefeller and rack of lamb. I had the cream of artichoke soup and eggplant Napoleon. All served was very good and my date raved that the oysters were the best she'd ever had. We splurged with an ending to the meal of some Pappy Van Winkle bourbon so we can say, "yes" we have tasted it. Whew!
Overall a very fine evening. Little loud and hard to navigate through but food and service is excellent!
Seemed to be some leaking problems going on from sprinkler pipe and ceiling had large area replaced but no tape just several sections of drywall unfinished in a white color that really looked liked the place was in a stage of remodeling Pricing was ok but to be honest the quality of the food wasn’t what I’d come back for.
superb meal and even better service. this place is a real gem so enjoy the ambience of a true Louisville treasure
I LOVE Gary”s On Spring! I have been there on date night with my husband and numerous times with a large group of friends. Chef prepares excellent food and Ms. Doreen makes you feel like family. This restaurant is an A plus, 5 star!
Very quaint, excellent food, personal service. This place is a well kept secret. Hope to visit many more times in 2018.
Food quantity and quality dependable. Service above average but not by a lot. Upstairs is loud if you want to have a conversation without yelling. Lots of competitive restaurant options for the same type food and at the same price point. Bucks is a better choice.
love love this restaurant and staff
Really great meal, creative and well-rounded menu. Attentive staff (server a little too intrusive). Noisy environment even though it wasn’t terribly busy the midweek evening we were there. Always enjoy Gary’s.
Gary’s earned a solid 3 star review on what was my first, and will be my only visit. No, we didn’t have a bad experience. Overall, it just wasn’t that great. Staff: the host and our server were very kind, welcoming and knowledgeable. Ultimately, I left them with a 4 star rating because they weren’t impressive beyond expectation. Atmosphere: the dining room is small yet comfortable, you don’t feel like you’re too close to others, yet, it somehow wasn’t inviting. The space felt cold (not temp) and wasn’t somewhere we wanted to stay long. Food: it was hard to identify what the restaurant was proud of...the steak was recommended, but in a foodie city, it’s hard to top other steakhouses. Our party opted for a variety, and while dinner was good, it wasn’t worth the price tag. Specifically, the chicken francese was served on a bed of delicious cord bread polenta but was overdone with a dramatically sweet blueberry reduction that served more as syrup than anything else. Drinks: of the five cocktails ordered, 1 was undrinkable from being so very sweet, and 3 attempts at of a gimlet left us questioning if the confused the lime juice for alcohol ratio. (These, though not well done, weren’t terrible.) Overall: we live in the neighborhood and have driven past for years without ever dining. The building is in great shape, as kind of a hidden treasure. The group agreed it felt like they were so focused on being a “great” restaurant, they missed out on being a “good” restaurant. For the money you’d spend, I’d recommend Decca, Rye, or Butchertown Grocery instead.
Gary’s on Spring has been a favorite of ours for years. Doreen and her staff made our evening and dining experience wonderful. Joey and Jennifer were most professional and gracious in ensuring we all had a great Friend’s get together. Thank You and well done!
What more could you ask for? Great food, great service, wonderful atmosphere.
This is a hidden jewel. Gary's sits on the corner of a neighborhood, easily missed.
The food 's deliverance is creative, which matches the menu.
I've had excellent service each trip I have there.
Gary’s is one of my favorite places. Good food, great atmosphere, upstairs is the best.
All food was fantastic, shrimp and grits are a home rub!!
Do yourself a favor and order the meatballs as an app.
Scallops and Grouper were superb!
