A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for over 20 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck. Your stomach may tell you there’s no room for the gorgeous toffee bananas. Ignore it.

    We were in Brighton for 4 days and enjoyed eating at Gars twice. The first time was so good we had to go back for a second. We highly recommend the chefs set menu for 2.

    Tars' soft shell crab and squid is wonderful. Our waiter, Kevin, was delightful and the service in general is exemplary. It is priced for its level, I.e. Not cheap but worth it

    Nice leisurely Saturday lunch with the family. Food fresh and delicious and very friendly, helpful staff. The salt and pepper squid and the mussels were very good as was the Cantonese pork belly. Rice portions looked a bit small but actually we were stuffed by the end.

    Previously we had always ordered in, but this time we decided to go to the restaurant. Food was excellent and even better than when delivered, although the standard is always very high. Best Chinese in town for sure!

    We sat upstairs, where throughout the entire meal the waiting staff either hovered at the top of the stairs just a few feet away from us or chatted. We will not be back as the food was not as good as usually either. Think the chef and the owners must of changed at what was once a great Chinese restaurant
