We have been using Gars for over 35 years and regrettably this may be last time. It took nearly 45 minutes to place the order. Then the main courses were delivered before the starters which we returned and the manager was not happy telling us the kitchen closed in 20 minutes like this was our fault. The starters then arrived but only 3 not the four ordered. Eventually the fourth arrived but the first 3 were already cold when delivered and being squid had been totally over cooked in thick batter not the usual tempura. The main courses subsequently arrived and it was clear that those brought earlier had simply been kept warm and being fish was again inedible. Neither the waitress nor the manager were bothered and they were obviously too busy and short staffed. This restaurant used to be excellent but now under new ownership it sadly is not any more.

So great to have a place in Brighton that does traditional dim sum. The haa gaau and sīu máai are as you would find in Hong Kong.

We were greeted really nicely by what seemed to be the restaurant manager. Our table was ready in a very short time, which was great. We then had to battle to get noticed by one of the staff to order our food and when the food came, it was just very underwhelming. My partner had the crispy chicken bao bao bun which had a different consistency to the one you are used to in a traditional japanese restaurant. It felt a bit more like a ciabatta than a bao bao. The mains then arrived after a long time. My lemon chicken was ok, just nothing special. We also had the duck with plum sauce and my partner had the katsu curry. Everything was just ‘ok’. The problem with the food being just ok is when the bill comes and it’s £100. We did have a couple of beers and a cocktail but I just thought that if you went to somewhere like Mowgli or Chilli, you will have more food, all of it better quality and come out having spent around the same money, or potentially just a tiny bit more. To top it all off, they brought the bill with the standard Chinese cookies and one of them was stale! 🤦 A disappointing experience

This was my first visit with my husband. Amazing food and staff. Delicious wine too. Will definitely be back!!

We’ve been here many times over a 30 year period and it’s never failed to make us feel welcome. This time was for Mum’s 75th and they really looked after us. The food was timely, delicious and nicely presented. Although we were a family party there were lots of other diners ranging from couples to smaller groups, the ambiance was perfect. Thank you Gard for another great meal and experience

Absolutely terrible! We knew about the set menus, but what we didn’t work out was that we had to both have the same set menu -so my partner couldn’t eat most of what was provided. For a valentine’s special (when they can expect parties of two) this is really inflexible, Then, the food just didn’t t arrive. In the end we took two of the three courses as takeaway, and still didn’t get home until after 11:30. I know the staff were trying, but it just wasn’t adequate,

I love Gars, but eating out on Valentine's Day (not celebrating it, just meeting a friend) and being given no other option than to choose one of their set Valentine's menus, is a poor decision of theirs. Not only are the menus expensive, neither of us felt that they offered value for money as the portions were very small. Overall we had a lovely evening, just a little disappointed with the menu options, we would have preferred to have more choice.
