Cozy restaurant with quietly efficient service. We sat at the counter to watch the kitchen in action when we wanted to, and chat between us when we wanted to. It was a little dangerous sitting at the counter because everything looked so delicious that it was hard to limit our ordering! The trout was delicious and perfectly cooked. The coq au vin was comforting. It was a quiet Sunday dinner service, with no theatre crowd.
Nice ambience, good food, very attentive staff. A little pricey, but nice for a celebration.
excellent pre-theatre dinner; go to crow's, eat there first
Very good French food, perfect for pre-theatre dinner, nice prix fixe menu, very good service. Thoroughly enjoyed.
We were 4 friends at dinner, catching up. Tasty food, non-intrusive but friendly and quick service. Will be back
Great wine selection. Interesting twists on French cuisine. Always a treat.
Good for pre theatre. We were not rushed and easily were in time for the play. The food was delicious.
Very professional service and great variety of dishes.
Nice relaxing environment. Perfectly timed at 5:30 before the theatre. Amazing pumpkin soup. Decent steak/frites (but had better peppercorn sauce). Will try it again as other menu options do look good. Recommended before the theatre!
Excellent French cuisine style menu with a good variety, well prepared and presented. The service was outstanding -- we had to wait in the lounge a few minutes for our table and complimentary bubbly was provided, plus the serving staff were very friendly and attentive throughout the meal.
My only qualm is the wine list -- there didn't seem to be enough variety in the under-$100 range for either French or Italian wines to suit our table's tastes. We tried two wines recommended by the staff and they were only so-so.
We really enjoyed the dinner. Great food. Reasonably priced. Looking forward to going back.
Came for my fiance and mine's anniversary. Excellent service, food and drink. Great atmosphere.
Besides the difficulty of finding the entrance at 1190 Dundas the evening was great. From the warm hostess, to the waitstaff who were enthusiastic about the menu. I enjoyed my seat which allowed me to peek into the Crow's Theatre space while Chris Abraham worked with his people. The food was fantastic and filling and I was very happy with the cocktails. I skipped dessert this time but will definitely indulge when I treat myself to dinner at your restaurant in the near future. The prix fix was a bonus, as well, so I hope that's a mainstay.
Love this place! Service is excellent, food is delicious.
Great addition to the neighbourhood.
The service was warm, friendly and unobtrusive. The young woman who looked after us was in every way delightful. Excellent classic French food.
Our waitress was wonderful - an Irish woman with a name that starts with B. The service was great from everyone and the food was outstanding. I will definitely come back.
The Rainbow trout was divine!
Neighbourhood gem and we enjoyed the food. Host was friendly, our server was attentive throughout the night, even though we came for a very late dinner. We ordered some appetizers to share among two people, and they helped us to separate the soup beforehand serving to the table. Good dessert and coffee to finish off the night.
Great food, ambience and service. Afraid to say how much we liked it otherwise we may never get back in!
Great neighbourhood find. The Manager was very welcoming and our server was great. definitely get the beet salad it was super fresh and tasty.
Great food, great service, great drinks. Cozy environment
Not much vibe here other than theatre patrons. Waiter was less than welcoming. Maitre D was overly effervescent. Good for large parties who aren’t looking for an intimate environment.
Excellent service, and staff very attentive and anticipated all our needs.
Enjoyed the steak Frites and French onion soup. Bread was excellent and escargots with ravioli was a lovely treat which my granddaughter really enjoyed.
Great location to have dinner and then go to show at Crow's Theater.
Been there lots, lately
This place is hopping busy.
Very popular, and deservedly so..
Great Sunday Brunch!
Great food, appropriate amount of servers per tables but not very observant... waited a long time to clear plates. Very long time.
I have been to Gare De L'Est several times in the last few months.
it has been consistently excellent in the food, and the service.
The PRIX FIXE menu is wonderful value for money, and there are dishes on there to suit every palate
Friendly servers along with amazing food. Seating and table to table space was a bit too crowded. Overall 4 star experience. Will need to go back to try the rest of the menu.
Perfect evening. Food was delicious and service pristine.
Aaron the manager is a superstar!
Best evening in a long time.
I’ve been several times now, and this place does what it says on the label - turns out solid, well-prepared bistro food with the odd twist. The atmosphere is buzzy and service solid. Classic bistro dishes (Steak Hachè with frites, moules frites or coc au vin) are all tasty with decent portions. Starters had a few surprises - a poached leek salad and a seasonal salad with some autumn fruit and blue cheese. Main criticism would be the pork schnitzel. Rather than done properly (shallow fried in butter and oil) they deep fry the cutlet. Mine was dry and the crust over cooked. The crust should provide a subtle toasted texture, not make me feel like I’m eating a McDonald’s hash brown. I get it, it’s faster and easier to deep fry the pork cutlet, but taking the extra time to do it properly is the difference between good and great. Cheese selection and deserts are very nice and there is a very good selection of wines by the glass. Pre dinner cocktails also very well prepared. Bread is beautiful, soft sourdough from Black Bird Bakery and is served with whipped, salted butter. The bread is an up charge, but well worth it to soak up the delicious sauces that come with the meals.
This place is amazing!
The staff are so great - friendly, but not insufferably so. The food is consistently good, but the mussels, last night, were not up to usual standard. I will be trying it again soon, to make sure it was just a blip- which I'm sure it was!
Unfortunately I had a very bad experience at this restaurant the food was shocking.
I had Pork Schnitzel it was sour and by the taste definitely old meat.
It was not fresh, it was burnt and I say it had been cooked three times (or cooked once and reheated twice)
It was inedible.
My friend had the mussels which were passable
Lovely ambiance. Great service. Food was traditional French, and delicious.
11th anniversary and we were greeted with a glass of bubbles. Classy!
Good french food, great service. Mussels and frites were amazing. Steak ftites was not my favourite but still good value.
Just one word.... Perfection or just really really really good.
This was our first time and we brought friends. Had a lovely meal with great starters and mains. Didn't try the cocktails as we went straight for the wine. Our server was the perfect balance between attentive and discreet with a very nice sense of humour.
Great for a couples' date night. Not cheap but it was a "night out".
Most memorable things we had: steak frites (loved the crust on the steak), scallops, bread pudding, mushroom soup.
Have been here a few times, and always try to persuade whoever is with me to share the mussels and another entree with me. This time it was the steak frites and it were very good. But nothing is as good as the mussels.... absolute heaven!!!!
Great atmosphere, delicious food, nice patio. Perfect spot for celebrating a birthday on the east end!
I've only been to the restaurant twice, but my first visit was more impressive. The portions were a bit bigger and the service was better. I was disappointed on my second visit with the bread (not warmed like the first time I was there and it didn't taste as fresh) and was charged for it. I don't recall being charged for bread the first time round. Also, the dish I ordered (Champignons Bourgignon) was very good, but not as good (or the portion as big) as the first time I went. Overall, it's a nice restaurant with a great patio, but I found everything the second time round a little inferior considering the prices.
