The best steak frites and great staff! I would definitely recommend this restaurant
Ordered the daily fish- sole that was cooked to mush. Daily soup - asparagus was bland. Schnitzel was dry and sauce was over salted. Dessert special - cheesecake with local strawberries was delicious. Room is lovely but very noisy. A/C was blowing on us and very cold.
Our group of three friends greatly enjoyed the occasion for which I would specially recommend Gare de l'Est: PRE-THEATRE DINNER before attending a performance at Crow's Theatre. Why is this not on your list? The convenience for theatre-goers is unbeatable.
All of the food earned the four-star rating. The French onion soup was outstanding.
The noise level made conversation a little difficult; otherwise, a really good dining experience.
What an incredible time. The food was amazing, staff were so approachable, I’m ashamed to say but I forget his name, guy that dressed fancy picked the best wine for us. I was back in Paris. Best resto in Toronto! I don’t usually write reviews but I had to for this place, I will definitely be back.
Great food, wine and service! What more could you want.
Excellent. We found the wine selection not up to par. Difficulty pairing with meal even though server was well versed.
Loved the patio!!
A fav with us. Friendly service. Tasty authentic bistro fare. Beet salad is excellent. Love the mushroom bourguignon.
We chose to sit outside, as it was a beautiful night - a little noisy from traffic and a party on the patio but it grew quieter as it got later. Good food choices. Standout was the trout!
Lloyd, our server, was exceptional- rarely found in Toronto!
The menu is typically French with a twist. The four grad, something I eat only once a year or so, was delicious and the rhubarb jelly accompanying it was fabulous.
Dined here before and had great service and food...unfortunately this time the service was not that great, took a long time to get drinks and half our table wasn't that impressed by the food. Hoping it was an off night
We felt like having quality French bistro fare and Gare de L'Est more than delivered.
Food and service were excellent, as always. A bit disappointed that our usual wine was not available and that the one recommended by the server was also not available, but we were given a couple of tastings to make a third choice.
nice modern room with dark accents. open and lots of Windows. they now have a patio as well.
service is very friendly and helpful. menu is small but very thoughtful. fresh and seasonal fare on the menu.
classic French and Belgian fare like moules frites and beef tartare and coq au vin with a modern flair. great beef short ribs on the special. steak frites was a little tough but tasty. fantastic chocolate desert. we had a great wine in the suggestion of the staff as well.
overall a great place for a romantic meal or fun group.
We love this restaurant - the staff is that perfect balance of personable and professional. The food is wonderful ingredients perfectly prepared. It is always a happily memorable evening at Gare de l'est.
It was my wedding anniversary celebration. The restaurant was very caring and even provided a complimentary champagne. Very thoughtful and very lovely experience. Definitely recommend to everyone.
I was finally able to make it here to eat and was pleasantly surprised. The fish was delish and fries --- very French. By far, the bread pudding was the star of the night.
Classic French brasserie food in an authentic room. Expert and friendly service. I will go back every time I am in town.
Service could have been a bit more knowledgeable and attentive. Food was good.
I have been to this restaurant many times and I had a good time. I have recommend my friends to visit and they were pleased with the overall service and the food..
We went for our anniversary dinner on a recommendation from a friend. The meal was very good. Rich flavours and a very simple presentation. Staff were friendly and there was a very pleasant atmosphere. I would recommend friends and family to go there for a good meal. Prices were very fair. My only recommendation would be to extend the selection of beers. Wine list was great, but I'm a draft beer person.
Food was excellent. We had the French Onion Soup, Frisee Salad with Lardons, Schnitzel and Omelette. Server, Emily, was delightful.
Really enjoyed our meal at Gare de l’est. we sat at the chef counter and it was awesome for a glimpse into the chefs world! Loved everything we had, left very full (nor room for dessert!) and will definitely be back.
Beautiful space. Good quality ingredients. We need more places like this in all neighbourhoods in Toronto. Great for an intimate date night or friends get together for brunch. Especially at the base of new condos in Toronto....where too often, Subway, nail salon, bank and realtors make for a banal street experience. Great addition to the neighbourhood. Will be back.
Very authentic French bistro cuisine. Great service. Lovely idea if you’re going to a play next door the same evening.
My husband and I came for dinner for my birthday this week. The food was perfect - simple, well-done French flavours and nice dish presentation.
Our server was personable and very helpful, and the maître’d that greeted us first at the bar was professional and welcoming.
Prices were very fair for the level of care we experienced.
Food was very good!
We enjoyed our evening!
It would be nice to offer some lower price wines in the wine list.
If you have a craving for a good steak frites, Gare de l'Est fits the bill nicely. Great ambiance. Pleasant, attentive service.
Warm service, delicious food unique & delicious cocktails. A neighbourhood fave.
this is my second visit to GDL. The first was dinner a few months ago and not great as they were understaffed and the service was terribly slow. We didn't blame the waitress; I felt the manager was not really working fast enough to help her overworked staff.. apologies all round and we agreed we would come back.
We had lunch this week and it was lovely and quiet; very nice waitress. There is nothing wrong with the attitude but as a service industry person I look for quick responses for orders.. ie 3 ordered tea and we got our cups but it took quite a while for the actual teapots to show up. It should happen right away as should a drink. My onion soup was totally underwhelming... not much cheese and definitely not hot. The chicken salad looked lovely and my friend enjoyed her omelette. It's a hard call as the intention is there; there just isn't the attention to detail (quicker service, hotter food, manager interested) that i'd like to see.
But we'll be back, I'm sure. We love the theatre and love the convenience of GDL.
Solid food, outstanding service! Our server was delightfully knowledgable and most pleasant. Loved her.
The service is wonderful. The mushroom dish is super. Frites are a bit heavy on the salt.
Nice atmosphere, great attentive service, reasonable prices, extensive wine list and fantastic French food make this a good choice in the neighbourhood for dinner, a date or a night out with friends.
Good food friendly service
The wine and food was accessional. Likewise the service. Would go again in a heartbeat.
The food was amazing as was the presentation. Wait staff very friendly.
The oysters were tasty (but pricey for Toronto at $40-something a dozen), and two of our other four dishes came with hard poached eggs instead of soft. Especially disappointing on a frisee salad. I expected better food for a $250 dinner. The wine list is great though - it’s a nice place to stop for a drink.
The staff at Gare de l'Est were professional, attentive and friendly. A good spot to dine before the theatre.
Had a great dinner. I really enjoyed this place! Definitely going back
