Nice atmosphere, great attentive service, reasonable prices, extensive wine list and fantastic French food make this a good choice in the neighbourhood for dinner, a date or a night out with friends.
Good food friendly service
The wine and food was accessional. Likewise the service. Would go again in a heartbeat.
The food was amazing as was the presentation. Wait staff very friendly.
The oysters were tasty (but pricey for Toronto at $40-something a dozen), and two of our other four dishes came with hard poached eggs instead of soft. Especially disappointing on a frisee salad. I expected better food for a $250 dinner. The wine list is great though - it’s a nice place to stop for a drink.
The staff at Gare de l'Est were professional, attentive and friendly. A good spot to dine before the theatre.
Had a great dinner. I really enjoyed this place! Definitely going back
Very nice dinner here. Appealing ambiance and excellent service. We enjoyed the onion soup and the very good steak frites. Recommended.
The menu is classic French dishes. Everything was tasty and well-prepared. My only criticism is that there was too much salt in something I ate -- I was very thirsty for the rest of the day.
Highly recommend the triple decker BLT - delicious butter fried bread, thick bacon, creamy mayo. Frites are crunchy and salty. Salad a little under dressed.
Superb pre-theatre prix fixe menu. Lovely ambience; wonderful, attentive service and YOU CAN CARRY ON A CONVERSATION WITHOUT SHOUTING. Possibly the best restaurant environment in which to do so in the city. My fourth meal there in three weeks (brunch, dinner and two pre-theatre meals), and I’ll be back soon.
Everything was average except the steak frites which was a big disappointment. It was supposed to come with a green peppercorn sauce, as promoted on the menu, but instead came with a nasty syrupy red wine reduction. When we brought this error to our waiters attention he promptly removed it and returned with the EXACAT SAME SAUCE proclaiming it to be different. Neither the wait staff or the “manager on duty” seemed to be proficient in French cuisine or well versed enough to know anything about sauces or service for that matter. Based on my experience I can’t recommend this restaurant. There are far better French bistros in the city with loads better service and food and way less attitude.
Love your place. So glad you are in the neighbourhood.
We reserved a table for dinner after the theatre and thoroughly enjoyed the entire evening. The salmon main course and the lemon tart were superb. Our server was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be going back!
We went before the show in the adjacent theatre. Our waiter James was wonderful. He, along with a colleague, helped us choose a great wine for dinner.
The food -- French bistro -- was great. We didn't finish our third course of the prix fixe. James had the dessert waiting for us during intermission. That was a really nice touch.
No rush, relaxed.
Dinner for three, with wine, around $200, so a really great bang for the buck.
On the recommendation of friends, we had dinner prior to seeing Jerusalem. The food was well prepared and interesting. Nice wine list. The staff was attentive to the fact that we had to be out at a specific time. I would go back.
This restaurant is a great addition to the corner of Dundas and Carlaw. We’ve been looking for a nice French restaurant for special occasions. This will definitely be our go to place. We ordered the steak frites and the moule frites. The steak frites was cooked to perfection with a terrific crispy top and the medium rare throughout. Moule frites was also delicious. Will be heading back there to try different things on the menu! Would love to try their prix fix menu one day
We were very happy with our experience. They are still obviously working out some kinks. We had some really long lulls between courses etc and our creme caramel was allowed to get to our table completely separated, curdled and still in the ramekin but otherwise everything was good. Great cocktails, really nice busy vibe and pretty good food. Sweet but kind of overwhelmed service. Good addition to the hood and we’ll be back to try again.
Third visit and each time a great experience
Great menu and great food. Solid wine list. Friendly staff.
Wow! What an experience. I was hoping for an authentic French experience, and this is precisely what I got! The food was delicious. The ambience is cozy, warm, romantic and smells so nice. All the employees, not just our waiter, are so friendly. This restaurant is classy, elegant and so worth it. I have already recommended it to other people and will continue to do so. I also look forward to returning for another DELICIOUS meal. To ALL the employees who work at this beautiful restaurant: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, IT IS SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED. YOU MAKE TORONTO PROUD!
Our first server seemed she didn’t want to serve us but halfway through it seems that our server changed. Our second server was very friendly and helpful. Which made our experience more enjoyable. The atmosphere was very relaxing and comfortable. It would probably be more busy if we came during dinner time but I enjoyed the lunch very much. Food was excellent and I would definitely come back again.
Everything was great, unfortunately the theatre in the same building set off the fire alarm.
This was our second time dining at Gare de l'Est and for the second time, it did not disappoint. The food is excellent and well presented. Drinks are well made and there is a very decent wine menu to go with dinner. While I am not normally a dessert eater, they did win me over with their lemon tart. Both times we have gone, it has been pre-theatre, but I have no trouble coming back some other time, when I don't have theatre tickets.
Excellent pre theatre service on Valentine’s Day. We were seated at the bar after making a last- minute reservation and the experience was excellent. The servers were attentive and fun as was the chef and his staff who worked wonders in the kitchen and took time to be friendly with us bar flies!
Good food, wonderful service, and super close to home! A fabulous addition to the neighbourhood!
Fantastic East end Restaurant, can't wait to come again
Neighbourhood gem, great food, very friendly staff -- we will go back!
Went here for my husband's birthday celebration. The food was quite good, and the wine was excellent. The servers were attentive. The only disappointment was that they do nothing to celebrate a special occasion - and the dessert, while good, was a bit pricey at $11.00.
Great meal, one of the best higher end restaurants East of downtown. Good service, inventive cocktails, excellent ingredients.
Amazing as always. My husband and I have been to Gare de l'Est a number of times. The food is superb and the service is excellent. We look forward to our next meal and visit.
Next time if would be nice if the table for seven was not really a table for six w/ the seventh diner squeezed in at the end.
It was our first time at Gare de L’Est. Our server was knowledgeable and courteous, and the food was delicious. The three of us all had the steak frites. The frites were perfect - thin and crispy, and the steak was a good cut - and it was well seasoned and well grilled. The chocolate dessert was excellent.
We arrived for a quick dinner pre-theatre show. The initial service was outstanding. Hostess and waiter going over menu options well prepared and trained as well as knowledgeable of the menu and wine options.
I ordered steak tartare which was rather bland in my opinion and also the onion soup which was also under-seasoned and a bit bland. The mushroom pasta and key lime desserts were great
Unfortunately the whole night was ruined when one of whom appeared to be a hostess (she was sitting tables) literally, and in a very rude way, kicked my wife out of the restaurant as she was waiting for our coats claiming that her holding a glass of red wine from the theatre could “make them lose their liquor license” . I don’t know if the lady was the manager or owner or just someone who worked there but that’s just not the way to treat a person much less a patron.
While we enjoyed it and plan to go back they missed the details.
When we arrived left to loiter until we were eventually engaged but then told to have a seat in bar. Once at table wait for service was too long, wasn’t that busy.
When booking I chose the birthday notice, we were even asked if the nigh was special and said birthday. Nothing
Ordered $90 white wine, came with a room temperature chilling canister, had to pour our own wine.
I could go in with some more but the point is don’t miss the details.
Due to traffic we were a bit late for our reservation and I was a bit upset, but our server reassured me that it was fine. A couple different servers helped out at the table and they were all exceptional. The food was delicious with beautiful presentation. We had a lovely time and would definitely return.
We had a long wait in between appetizers and main dish...a half hour, which is too long. But food was good.
Standard fare done very good. The restaurant is attached to the Streetcar Crow's Nest (theatre) and perfect for a pre-theatre meal. They offer a pre-theatre pr-fixe and. they are very conscious of the theatre schedule and will get you in and out and into your seats on time. The champignons bourguignons was excellent!!
Perfect!! Atmosphere is amazing. Drinks are yummy. Food is great. All the staff are sweet and friendly!
Perfect pre-theatre spot with fun atmosphere and good food. Friendly service. It was our first time and we will definitely be back for dinner again soon.
