Food was good, portions small and limited menu selection
Classy, cozy, funky and fun, all at the same time. Every course from appetizers to desert was both a surprise and delight. I tasted my date's beet gnocchi ( crazy, i know) and was amazed by the melting, buttery sensation of a pasta that had no butter; wild! The regular menu seemed very reasonably priced, but we went during Providence Restaurant Weeks that they had a special menu for, so it was an especially good value.
It is closing in a week...wished it had closed a week earlier so we would not have wasted out $$$. Menu for restaurant week looked good...but got there and break was stale (they used to have these gorgeous little rolls served warm with sea salt on top)...the salad was a boring salad...the fish dish was maybe 2 ounces of fish with about 1 ounce of pocked sweet potatoes. Dessert was forgettable. The only good thing was we had two bottles of really good wine at a good price.
Meh. This place looks fancy and is priced fancy, but then the food is not really that impressive. For the same money I could go to The Dorrance or Gracie's and get much better, more creative food.
Myself and a friend went Saturday night for Restaurant Week. It was absolutely delicious. I had the cod fish and my friend had the short ribs. Both dishes were outstanding. The wait staff were helpful, but not constantly bothering you with questions. I was very impressed and will most certainly be back. We loved it!!
Fantastic meal and great atmosphere. Service was wonderful.
Very nice cozy setting. We had been traveling all day so we went to dinner early. We were the first diners for the evening and sometimes that ca be a challenge. We were warmly greeted and our server was relaxed knowledgeable and attentive. Food was all very well prepared and delicious. The only thing we didn't like greatly was the pork spread appetizer. It was listed as "twinky" and we were told it was somewhat sweet but it was too sweet for my tastes. My wife had the Asian chicken and I had a beef short rib special of the evening. Both were excellent. As were the mussels- delicious.
A great dinner on a quite night in the restaurant. The charcuterie tasting plate was worth every penny.
Had the chef's choice charcuterie and cheese plate of 10 selections - creative and excellent. Was perfect for two. Highly recommend Garde and return regularly.
Very enjoyable dining experience. Service was excellent and server was very attentive. Food was excellent as well.
Our group of 4 was looking for a quick good meal before attending a play at the PPAC. We started off with the Charcuterie which was fabulous. The beetroot gnocchi and hazelnut mousse were also noteworthy. Everything was delicious! Service was perfect! We will definitely be back soon.
Good spot in downtown Providence, service was attentive, food very good. Two thumps up!
Great first experience. Service and food was excellent. This place should be busier than it was on the night we went. An undiscovered gem.
Fun restaurant a bit pricey but the service was great and so was the food and varied items to choose from was great.
I'm going to just say that Garde seems to have a lot of untapped potential unless I'm just late to the party.. and it's a "has been" restaurant. Free valet is wonderful. The menu offerings vary a lot and peaked our interest but for the price, the dishes are underwhelming. We ordered a couple different entrees and flat breads. They were ALL small portions. It was a good thing we ordered the overpriced charcuterie board as an appetizer. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Very nice ambiance other than always seeming empty.. This being our second time in on a weekend with it dead.. maybe they should consider running some sort of promotion?
Great beer list for sure! The entrees are really creative and you definitely have to try a Charcuterie board. The lamb salami was my favorite! The dishes are very creative!
I took my family here for dinner while visiting my daughter @ Brown U. We were very pleasantly surprised. Food was all very creative and everyone enjoyed their meals. Our server, Ben, was super-friendly, very knowledgable about both food and wine, and just an absolute pleasure to share an evening with.
My wife and daughter shared a cheese plate for their starter, and my son had the lamb house-cured salami, which was outstanding. I enjoyed oysters with bacon and a light cream sauce which we also delicious. For our mains, we had a fish, a pasta, the pho and the special pork chops. Not one dish was anything less than wonderful. My pork was cooked just perfectly, and the light sauce and accompaniments were perfect. My 15 year-old son's duck pho was, in his words, "outrageous," and my wife and daughter thoroughly enjoyed their shared pasta and fish. Wine pairings were excellent, thanks to Ben's recommendations. And we shared two desserts, which were wonderful. I recommend the hazelnut torte in particular.
All in, we dropped about $200 (including gratuity). Coming from NY Metro, that's a steal for dinner for four, albeit with only two glasses of wine. I'd absolutely come back to this great Providence find.
Great location. Attentive staff. Good food at a good price.
Did not give us bread until we asked for it and their bread was cold
Second time there and have been impressed both times. The food choice was interesting and excellent. Had oysters as well as the charcuterie and cheeses and corn soup which were all superb. Service was good and would highly recommend it.
I'm not sure why place is not more popular. It is easily one of the best restaurants in Providence. Really. But it seems that either people don't know about it or just haven't been there. The food is consistently very good, the service is always excellent, and the ambiance is elegant yet fun.
This was one of the poorest dining experiences I ever had. I went for my birthday and left sorely disappointed. The services was acceptable but the food was awful. We started with the charcuterie board and the meats were dry and the pate portion was the size of a dime. The steak was cold and over cooked and the place was so loud we could hardly hear. However we were one of three tables. To top it off the one thing I was excited about come dessert was the cheesecake. Unfortunately the menu was out of date and they no longer offered it. Over all I would not recommend.
It was oddly empty on a Friday night. Food was fabulous. We will be going back again soon!
Second time we've dined there. Equally excellent!
Great potential but they need to work on the service model. Our server brought food cooked in butter to a dairy intollerant customer (he was informed) and the wine he recommended was atrocious. The Berkshire pork chop was fantanstic which saved the night. We would not return.
Excellent service. Good food that was somewhat creative. Good value.
Hake, gazpacho, mussels, steak, dessert oh my gosh fabulous. Really wonderful find, we'll be back.
We went to Garde de la Mer for Providence Restaurant week and were not disappointed. We are foodies and cook all the time so our selection criteria includes "would we make this ourselves"? Garde certainly met and exceeded our expectations....we loved the charcuterie plate, the mussels were obscenely delicious, and the dessert was the perfect combination of flavors, textures, and sweetness without being sensory overload. MIke Rigney and our wait person Emmy made us feel at home without overdoing it. We had a window seat and a gust of wind knocked over one of the outside planters - Mike's team had it cleaned up lickedty split - you never knew that dirt had been everywhere. Definitely 5 stars to this group!
We have no complaints, however the restaurant was essentially empty on a Saturday night.
This was due to the fact it was July 4th weekend, and as a result downtown Providence was very quiet as a whole.
I'm sure it would be bustling on most Saturday nights exclusive of holiday weekends.
The selection was uniquely quite eclectic and everyone in my party enjoyed every course that included meat and fish dishes for the main course. All were flavorful and superbly prepared.
Very with small portions. Limited menu with not a lot of seafood to choose from. No decent cocktails. Dessert was fantastic however.
We drove from Boston to Providence to go to Garde de la Mer for our wedding anniversary. The food and ambiance are so worth the 50 minutes drive. The food is amazing to say the least. The service is outstanding! I can't wait to go again.
On a recent visit an asparagus soup was delicious, the salads were a mixed bag (warm lettuce is an experiment gone wrong), and two fish courses were ruined by oversalting. The service was correct but supercilious. A dinner for four costing $325 should deliver a finer experience.
I was so looking forward to trying this new restaurant only to be disappointed. The first thing you noticed when going in was a burnt smell like someone had burned something and the smell permeated the restaurant. For my entree I had ordered a fish dish that was overcooked. Fish is so delicate that overcooking it ruins it. For the prices I expected great. I won't go back.
Service was excellent as well as the food. Great oysters and fish. Drinks were really good too. Will definitely return to this restaurant.
We've dined at Garde de la Mer several times and have always been satisfied. The bar is terrific, great drinks, oysters and service. Unfortunately dinner was a disappointment. The menu had changed and we felt the choices were limited. The food was only fair. The service was very poor. We had the same server the last two times we dined so we knew what to expect.
Bright open space in great downtown location. Able to sit outdoors, or indoors next to an open window. Menu was enticing. However, it took twenty minutes after sitting before we could get a very small glass of wine, and it didn't even appear to be very busy. The cheese plate was great, and the food was good, but overpriced. The names of the main course choices were more original than the dishes themselves.
Everything was excellent the food, the staff the atmosphere. My wife surprised me for my birthday knowing I would like the food we will be going back
I came here with my hubby and toddler daughter for Easter brunch and we were super impressed. The space is very cool and well done. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. I had the white asparagus soup which blew me away and hubby started with the lamb tartare. Our main courses (steak and eggs and the burger) were equally tasty. The desserts were great. Overall, we felt like we had found our place.
Then we went back for brunch about a month later, again with our daughter and my stepmom in tow... Dum dum. It was TERRIBLE. Our waiter was awful. As soon as he came over, I knew he would be bad. He clearly had an attitude. He was inattentive and rude. He gave off a strong vibe that he had no desire to be working. The food was unimpressive and my steak was woefully undercooked. I could have overlooked the food given our prior experience, but the service was AWFUL. We had reservations to go before a show a few weeks later which I promptly cancelled. There are so many great restaurants in Providence. It will be a hard sell for me to ever go back.
Was expecting a French bistro with great food found a wannabe French bistro only one plate tasted ok and the seafood plateau way over priced for what you get they need to improve on the food big time
