Garde Manger Ratings and Reviews
Just plain fun. Fantastic food and incredibly friendly (and very professional) service that lives up and exceeds the hype. Just go. Sit at the bar if you can and put yourself in the hands of the staff who will guide you all the best things to eat and drink.
We drove from Moncton NB to Montreal for the weekend to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Garde Manger had been on her bucket list for years so we decided to splurge and reserved a table for 4 at 10pm. We weren’t seated until 10:30, which isn’t a huge deal but the rest of the experience made it matter more. With that scale of restaurant, we would have at least appreciated an offer for a beverage, to sit at the bar, or hell, even take our coats for us! The pork tenderloin was very good, the steak was mediocre..flavourful but it only came hickory sticks..not a veggie, bread, or anything else. Waters were filled once with our apps but empty for the rest of the meal. Again, not a huge deal..the rest of the experience just made it matter more. Waitress was decent, but not what I’d expect at the scale/price of restaurant. We tipped according to what we felt fair for being late, not overly attentive, and food we could’ve gotten anywhere..10%. She quickly told us the tip was very insulting, and minimum tip requirements in Quebec is 15%. We told her that we were from NB and were not aware of the tip requirements. She walked away. The manager passed by so I waved him over. I politely explained that we didn’t mean to offend the waitress, we aren’t from here but we tipped according to what we felt was fair and she was quite insulting. He said: no, I’m sorry but this tip is f**king insulting, and walked away. I said: excuse me, I wasn’t finishing speaking! He said back at us: then don’t tip so insulting next time! I later spoke with another waitress at another restaurant. She told us that there is no minimum requirement. Usually standard minimum is 15% but not required. If I had been at a Boston Pizza with a $70 bill and that kind of service then ya, I would’ve been fine with our experience (minus them speaking to us at the end) and tipped more..I expected a better experience at that scale of a restaurant. Sorry they that felt they hosted a better experience than they delivered!
Garde Manger was good, very good in fact. But it was massively overpriced for the food and experience. The wine list is very pricey. The food was just fine with no complaints but nothing that justifies the prices. It was so dark at the table that my friend (whose young eyes are just fine) ate a whole wedge of lemon because he couldn’t see what was on his plate. I would Not bother to return.
Had a very nice meal with a great large tortellini app in a porcini mushroom sauce stuffed with hazelnut cream. Shared the halibut plate and salmon plate with both fish cooked nicely in a tasty broth and with some nice vegetable accompaniments. Had a very nice albeit quite sweet blueberry cobbler with blueberry ice-cream for dessert. Sat at the bar which was perfectly fine and enjoyed the great service for both drinks and food from the very personable and helpful bartender.
We had to wait a month to get a dinner reservation. Our whole trip to Montreal was based on this dinner.
I will say that it was well worth it.
Our waiter was outstanding as was the rest of the staff. The meal that my wife and I had were top notch. Flavorful, well plated and filling.
I will defiantly come back next time I'm in Montreal.
This was our first time visiting Garde Manger all the way from Toronto. It was worth the trip! DELICIOUS. Fresh and local, amazing wine, amazing service. Had the best server! I wish I could remember her name but she was a brunette and very attentive to us. It was my husband’s 40th and he was beyond happy with the experience. Would always recommend Garde Manger!
We attempted to make a table reservation but the only seats available we're at the bar. We had a wonderful time conversing with Matty the oyster shucker and Erika the bar tender. The oysters were incredibly fresh and the appetizers were equally delicious, clever, and thoughtfully put together. We would be happy to come back not only for the dining experience but also for the wonderful staff. Thanks again Matty!
I waited a long time to dine here and it did not disappoint. We ate at the bar where David was the server, bartender and seafood tray prep. He was we versonable and his suggestions were spot on. The food was incredible and inventive. This is a must go to restaurant while in Montreal.
