We dined on the last day Garde East was open this season, so perhaps things weren't at their very best. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful experience. The ambience was spectacular, outside on a terrace deck with unobstructued view of Vineyard haven harbor on a perfect warm night with occasional light breezes. The menu was solid, if not distinguished, although the stuffed squash blossoms were a delight to find and to eat. Our main courses, halibut and scallop risotto were also very good. We had a good California sparkling wine and also ordered dessert (beignets) to have for break fast. Altogether a memorable night. Good food, good wine, attentive service and outstanding ambiance.
Great food and service!!! Loved the atmosphere too!
From the sommelier to the wait staff to the chef himself, it was absolutely fabulous. Add the view and our dining was incomparable.
Our 6th visit this season and it continues to perform
The food. wait staff sommelier the sommelier in training the floor manager are all excellent would highly recommend to all
The food and service were both excellent and the setting and views were spectacular. The only drawback is that the main courses are very pricey
$3. for additional bread - ridiculous! The dishes were lovely prepared and presented - too over priced.
Enjoyed the lovely evening there. In fact going to go again this week.
Great chef! Sal!
We had a wonderful dinner at Garde East. Asked for waterview on the reservations and we were given front row window seats. The halibut was cooked perfectly our guests had the pork loin and loved it martinis were prepared perfectly as the wine list is the best on the Island.
Been going to Garde East since it first opened and it never disappoints. Have gone there at least 7 times this season and all very good. Highly recommend it is best in VH
What a lovely spot, fabulous food and great staff. The best of MV
Food was good, views outstanding. Service was great. Food came quickly and we were finished just in time to meet friends coming in on the ferry.$
I Was so looking forward to my last dinner in Vineyard Haven, at Garde East. It started out beautifully, with a romantic table in the back room overlooking the water and magnificent yachts. There was a large table seated next to us with 10 people. The acoustics there are never the best, but this visit was overwhelmingly uncomfortable and cancelled out our romantic seating accommodation. The large party seated next to us were all screaming, and obscenities could be heard amongst the loudness and chatter. I felt like I wanted to get up and remove myself from the restaurant the entire evening!
My dinner started out with a delicious salad, but went downhill with the tuna and avocado Dish, as the tuna was remarkably bitter, and there was no sauce to disguise or improve the taste. My boyfriend’s dish was tasteless and unimaginative. Between the unmindfully loud table next to us and the meal, I won’t be returning.
Needless to say, we left angry and totally disappointed, and directly hightailed it to have some Mad Martha’s Ice cream, which was totally delicious!!!!
Food was very good. Portion sizes were very small and expensive. However setting is lovely.
This place is amazing. The staff is so sweet and wonderful, you don’t ever want them to leave the table. Food is of course wonderful. Been here two years in a row for special occasions and it always delivers!
Excellent food and service. Very consistent in terms of both service and quality of the food. Nice people.
Ambience was lovely. Service was fine. Portions are small. Bread was excellent. Chowder was sour and inedible. Grilled octopus was good. Lobster roll excellent. Muscles only fair. Value only fair.
The food was excellent, but our service was awful. Our server took our order, then an hour and a half later, he came by and asked if we had been served, which we had not! Waiting ~1-3/4 hours for our entré is unacceptable. And, during the long delay, no one even came by to refill water glasses. Essentially, we were forgotten and abandoned. Very disappointing.
Lovely setting, but price is high for the quality. Good food, but not good enough for the price point.
Looking for a special ambiance for guests. Picked Garde East because of the views of the Martha's Vineyard (Vineyard Haven) harbor and sunsets. Asked for a special section but they were having a large private party - I could understand. They gave us a table that was just as nice. A scallop special was absolutely fantastic. Highly recommended as many restaurants on the island are hard to get to.
Very cute restaurant on the water (marina), and food was delicious. We were the only table eating in our area, so it was very quiet. There was another section of the restaurant just as nice but separate from our area. Unique experience and atmosphere.
I expected much more from a place that gave the impression it was so booked up. There were plenty of empty tables. We were rather underwhelmed with the food selections and had to send back an item. The service was, also, so so. I don't see any of us returning to this restaurant.
Amazing ambiance and the food has a bit of creative flair but not enough to justify a $60 steak. Overpriced.
This the worst dining experience we’ve ever had in Martha’s Vineyard. The restaurant didn’t appear busy yet it took 12 minutes after being seated for a server to acknowledge us. Only two of us ordered drinks and the server managed to screw up the drink order. The appetizers and salads were inedible. Don’t order the salad with vinaigrette dressing unless you really like our vinegar. The halibut was awful (overcooked and not flaky) and we sent it back. The other entrees were mediocre, but they got the french fries right. This restaurant does not need to be open next season.
3rd year in a row visiting Garde East and the kitchen remains super slow to churn out orders. Don't know why they have such a problem but it was not that busy when we were there. Food quality also seems to have dipped this year. Crudo's and other appetizers did not pop in the same way the did the last couple of times we were there and the Wagyu steak entree was fine but not the show stopper that it should be. Food was fresh but just not that interesting.
It rained for a few minutes on the deck and a party of 4 made a big deal about having to go in so the staff let them back out. We would have liked to but didn’t ask. Because of the commotion, our server was working in an inside dining room so we couldn’t get drinks etc that we wanted. Also, there was a very strange playlist w Guns N’ Roses. Would like to go back for the food though.
We made last minute reservations but you would never know based on the special care and enthusiasm of the staff. Every joined in to wish our friend a happy birthday and made the occasion special. The food was delicious, the view magical and the service superb!
The food was marginal. The lobster roll was a disappointment.
Limited menu of overpriced pretty boring food, but the view is incredible, the staff was super friendly and great, and the cocktails were good.
We love coming back every year for our trip to the vineyard. Great food in a relaxed elegant casual waterfront setting. Focused menu and exceptional wine list with something for everyone.
Dinner is doable from Falmouth if you book an early table and jump on the last ferry back to Woods Hole just a 5 minute walk from the restaurant
The last three years we’ve enjoyed this restaurant once a year when we visit Vineyard Haven. We were excited to dine there once again. We were disappointed, however, from our waiter bringing my husband a drink while I was absent from the table and not asking me when I returned and my having to flag someone to place an order, to our waiter disappearing (a new waiter arrived to take his place), to our ‘Heirloom Tomato Salad’ being field greens with a couple of cherry tomatoes halved; its ‘tarragon mint vinaigrette ‘ was terribly vinegary, to charging an $8 pp bottled water fee when we would prefer to order our own and not have continuous pours without asking us if we needed a second bottle (which we did not, we had wine and cocktails). Overall, just so many disappointments. It was a special overnight for just the two of us in Vineyard Haven and we had been looking for an equally special dinner. I would prefer to be reporting that it was excellent!
But, it was not.
This restaurant is so poorly run I hardly know where to begin. For one thing, it was almost empty; our party of 4 ate early to get to a movie starting at 7:30. There was only one other couple in the whole place and we were seated incredibly close to one another so we wound up sharing many conversations. The food and drinks took an extremely long time to arrive despite the fact that they had only 6 customers. We couldn’t imagine what the kitchen was doing. (Getting a Coca Cola took a very long time, supposedly because they have to walk to their adjacent building to get it.) The salad dressing was awful, enough so that the salad went uneaten. Lobster rolls were being offered for $40! The menu was so limited we had difficulty finding things we wanted to order, not usually a problem for us.
On the bright side....our waitstaff couldn’t have been lovelier. If you’re satisfied with dining out in a really beautiful setting with very nice people waiting on you, then this is your place. If you want good food served in a normal amount of time, go elsewhere.
This place has so much potential,I hope they’ll get their act together.
Limited menu. Halibut had to be recooked was dry. Initial bread service was stale. Service was just ok. Entre took a long time and restaurant was almost empty
This was not the quality restaurant we remembered from last summer. Hardly any fish on the small menu and no entree specials. The food was ok but not exciting to the palette.
Wait staff was excellent and attentive. We felt badly for them as no one seemed excited about the meals.
The restaurant was not busy like last summer. We were so disappointed.
It was our wedding anniversary
We booked it as it came highly recommended
We got there 30 mins early but they had decided not to open due to unforeseen circumstances
They had confirmed booking by email and we were also asked to reaffirm the day before
What a poor way to treat customers
The very least I would have expected is an email or call cancelling to let us know.
NickL - I'm terribly sorry for closing on your anniversary. We experienced extreme weather, that resulted in a tornado warning on that day. The storm blew out one of our circuit boards causing us to close for 2 days. We attempted to call all of our guests but obviously did not get in touch with you. I regret that more effort wasn't made to reach you. This was an embarrassing mistake that I would like to make right. Please contact me at your convenience. Matt 508.687.9926
Beyond expensive for the quality. Will NOT be dining here again
Have gone to Garde East now four times this season, the views are excellent food limited menu that does not change dramatically but what they offer is very good but more specials would be a recommendation. This time the service was extremely slow yes it was busy not full but busy but waitress had at least 4 - 5 tables she was responsible for. It is peak season peak season is short on MV thus you the owners need to staff accordingly waiting for service is never a good thing.
Garden East is an excellent choice for a special evening. Preparations are all subtle, clearly well thought out and combined to make a very good dinner superb.
My husband and I have dined at Garde East annually since it first opened and it has been a go-to place for us while on The Vineyard (including restaurants like State Road, Detente, Atria, Sweet Life, Red Cat Kitchen, etc.). Essentially, we love eating great food on Martha's Vineyard but we were extremely disappointed by our last visit to Garde East.
We arrived at our reservation time (7:45) and were promptly seated. Our waitress arrived and we placed our drink order. The drinks still had not arrived when she returned 10 minutes later to take our dinner order. The drinks finally arrived, 20 minutes after placing the drink order. We then continued to wait for our appetizers. As we waited, we looked around the dining room (which, on the first floor where we were seated, was not overly crowded) and saw that several other peopled who were seated before us were also still waiting for their first courses. We did not receive our appetizers until 8:30, over 30 minutes after placing the order. I ordered the roasted mussels and when opening the pot, I noticed approximately 25 mussels in 2 tablespoons of broth - the mussels were essentially dry. I asked for more broth, they took away my mussels and returned with the pot containing approximately 2 more tablespoons of broth. I'm not certain what bothered me more - that they took away the mussels and couldn't simply bring the broth in a cup or that I only received 2 tablespoons more of broth. It appears that there was a broth rationing that night.
After finishing appetizers, we waited another 35 minutes for dinner. While waiting, we observed what seemed to be a lot of chaos - hostesses busing and setting tables, wait staff running to and from the 2nd floor, and a frantic kitchen - all out of character from our prior visits.
Bottom line - excluding my dry mussels, the food was good but service was uncharacteristically lacking. I hope that the rest of the summer is better for Garde East.
