Garces Trading Company Ratings and Reviews
We came for dinner while away for a weekend in Philly. Selected the restaurant based on location, reviews and dining availability.
It happened to be the first night of restaurant week so there was a special menu. We had an absolutely fantastic 4 course meal for $35.00/ea. Both my husband and I really enjoyed every dish. Stand outs were the roasted cauliflower and mussels appys and the Chicken Roti (absolutely delicious). The wine selection was very nice. The wait staff were all very pleasant. The ambiance is very pleasing. Would absolutely recommend!!
We were a bit disappointed. We expected more from this restaurant because of its name. It is casual dining not fine dining but even though.. The service was also a let down. No one asked if we wanted regular water or not or if we wanted to order a drink. Cali-flower small plate was very basic and quite a bit raw. My daughter's pasta was good. We were one of the first ones there at 6pm on a Saturday and they did not have one of the desserts on the menu. Overall - ok, if you are looking at the pre or post theater meal and everything else is booked.
We loved it! This was our first time, and we will definitely be back. Fabulous food. Cuisine is very eclectic. The restaurant was not crowded on a theater night, and I think that people try to dine closer to Broad Street. Well, this restaurant is just three blocks from everything, and a real find. And they do offer a very nice pre-theater menu.
Atmosphere and drinks were outstanding. Food was very good, as was the service. I has the scallops, which were enormous and perfectly cooked, served with a warm comfort-food style grits and crunchy white asparagus - fun combination. Reliably very good all around.
We went for a birthday celebration and although it was a snowy Friday night there were many people in the restaurant. The seating is extremely tight and you can hear everything from the next table which is uncomfortable. The food was fantastic however and that is why we win. Wine was a little expensive. Next time we will bring our own. We ordered two bottles of Average wine and it was over $100. Desert fabulous.
Food lacked flavor so we were disappointed. Nothing blew us away. The waitress had no patience for us and kept trying to rush us to order, while we were hoping to have a more relaxed dining experience The restaurant was empty, so it wasn't like there was another group waiting for our table and she was trying to turn tables. We felt that she kept rushing us and did not make it a pleasant dining experience. The biggest plus was that it is BYOB. No one in my group would recommend it or go back. We were disappointed in this Garces restaurant.
Everything was very good about Garces; the baked eggs were exceptional. We had a group of 8; drinks were just slightly slow to show up, but the service was attentive, helpful with the vegan in our bunch, and efficient. Prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food.
I would go again!
Spent the night in Philly with wife and three kids(oldest 7 yrs) between holidays. Great place for groups, families, or couples; accommodations for all! Seated in the Wine Room. Did the chef's larger tasting....Outstanding, but come hungry. Overall, restaurant was vibrant/ lively, prompt service, with excellent menu options.
There are so many restaurants to choose from. Why would anyone pick Garces Trading Company? It used to be that Garces had a hand in each of his places. Not any more. The menu was ordinary as was the food. Nothing creative. Even the bread was sub par. My coffee was lukewarm and tasted like the end of the pot. It was Xmas eve and we were the last to leave at 9. Okay. Don’t open at all if you can’t give it your all. Mr. Garces has spread himself too thin. Too bad because at the beginning, Amada and Tinto were wonderful. Now they have become stale, just like Garces Trading Company.
Had Christmas Eve dinner at Garces Trading Co. We arrived an hour early and had expected to sit at the bar to have drinks until our table was ready, instead they were able to seat us immediately! We placed an order for a few appetizers (all of which were delicious!) We had the house made mozzarella (I'd had before and couldn't wait to eat again), the cauliflower starter, and the seafood salad. There wasn't a scrap of anything left. Our dinner came out quickly as well. I ordered my steak medium rare (I always order that in case restaurants overcook it) but this was maybe even a little more rare than medium rare. We all wound up ordering a different dessert which were perfect portions. My ice cream was two types and two scoops each which was a bit much, but very delicious! Our server was attentive but not hovering, the ambience was cozy and not crowded or loud. A very intimate dinner with excellent food!
The food was pretty good, but nothing that would make me want to come back. Our server got our drinks and then disappeared for about 15 minutes. We did the 25pp deal, each getting a chicken sandwich, and a starter (i got a coffee, he got a bloody mary) Seems a little expensive to still pay that much if I opted out of an alcoholic beverage and still paid the same amount.
Very good food. I find that all Garces places have a tendency to over salt some dishes (duck fat fries shouldn't taste like a salt lick). Service was OK to poor. When you order a chefs tasting with a wine pairing, you expect an explanation of the dish and the wine to well, be paired. Three different servers dropped off our dishes. 1 took the time to explain what it was and comment. One of others dropped a dish of fusilli in some kind of sauce, dont know what because wasn't told. It came with one of the wine pairings. The last server came by after we finished that course and said "here's the chicken" dropped the plate and walked. After trying to get her attention and finally asking a busser to get her, we asked for the wine pairing. Then we're told there wasn't one, it came with the pasta. I asked why not with this course? She replied that they were supposed to come out together. Well they didn't I pointed out. After. Some awkwardness she asked if we would like to buy an extra glass of wine or get the dessert wine served with the chicken. Not a great experience overall.
Do not recommend for Sunday supper “special.” You may get more for your money by ordering from the regular menu. Salad was just ok and looked like a serving for one thought it was intended to be served family style. The Italian fried chicken was under seasoned, but the accompanying fried veggies and potato style were good. Again, the portions were small for the price per person. The restaurant was very empty so word may be out that this place is not a great value.
I came here with a couple of friends for brunch. $20 pitcher of mimosas...can’t beat that, especially in the city. The menu wasn’t awesome, but the food here is so good. I’ve been here for dinner before. Their house made mozzarella is to die for. I would recommend coming here for brunch, or dinner!
Overall, our experience was fine. The restaurant environment was very comfortable. Large restaurant but still cozy enough and noise level was fine. Food was quite good. The only issue we had - and we've decided to not let it stand in our way for another visit - was the service and timeliness of response. When we arrived at 6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm reservation, the restaurant was not crowded at all but we did mention we had theatre tickets for 8 pm. It was confirmed that we had plenty of time for an unrushed meal. This said, our main meal came to us very very late leaving us little time for enjoying it in an unrushed manner. We did ask the waiter 4 times to check on the meal. It's not clear if he never checked or he did and there was nothing he could do about it. Overall comment, the waiter did not seem concerned at all that despite more than sufficient time for our dinner, we were ultimately very pressed for time given the length of time it took for the main meal to arrive. We were able to identify a manager who checked right away for us. The manager ended up - as a courtesy (we did not ask for this) discounting our meal by 10% which was very nice of her. All in all, we would go back but will hope for more timely service and a waiter who understands concerns if things are running late.
French bistro feel with inventive twist to menu. Duck fat fries were a treat. The small plates to start with a cheese mix to plate was a nice start to our meal. We couldn't decide if the short rib lasagna was our favorite or the scallops. Everyone was jumping in on the lemon tart, unassuming in description but tangy and refreshing with the berry compote. Making the entire experience a delight was our perky server who snuck in to remove plates, refill glasses and make suggestions without disturbing our group conversation. Next time, the pappardelle with lamb ragu.
