Great lunch & drinks before a show. Especially enjoyed the melted mozzarella appetizer and the Red Sangria.
Loved the olives and the meatballs and my steak Verde was delicious. Great selection of wines. The homemade mozzarella was more firm than I expected but good. (Just not a burrata style, FYI). Service was friendly and accommodating.
This was our second time and we enjoyed the food. I felt the service was not as attentive or as friendly as our first time. We will definitely go again but ask for a different server.
Food was very good. The marinated cauliflower and masala vadai were great for table appetizers. I had the chicken and foie gras canneloni which was very good with a brown butter sauce. But for $18, the portion was very small for an entree. Table mates had the short rib lasagna which was very tasty . They commented on how much they loved the lemon flavor. This was a better sized portion and was served with garlic bread. We also had the roasted chicken which was a hit. We shared a dessert - chocolate mousse which was good but also very small. I wouldn't take a hungry guy there due to portions being small but for 4 women it was good.
This was my second time here with friends. We ordered the meatballs (great!) and mozzarella (not worth the price) as apps. I had the Fusilli Cabonara for dinner (excellent!!).
Service was not optimal. We were very hungry and the waitress was very slow with drinks. The water kept being filled though; that's a plus.
Good atmosphere, fresh food, and an enjoyable time. I'd go back to try more items on the menu!
This place is a hidden treasure! I cannot believe how delicious the food was at this place. My friend and I had the brunch before the matinee Theater show. The homemade bread and pastries that are included are heavenly. I had the roasted cauliflower and smoked fish platter and ate every bit of it. I could not believe that the cocktail was included in the brunch price. I cannot wait to go back and try other menu items. I highly recommend it.
Food was delicious, however, noiser level a bit too much.
A very unpleasant experience. We have eaten at several other Garces restaurants that we loved. We deferentially look for Jose Garces restaurants and were excited to be in his home town.
This one not so much (actually, not at all).
Food came out rather quickly -- so no time to linger. First course -- house made mozzarella came out before I begun my cocktail. Entree came out while I was still drinking my cocktail -- even still -- my husband's pasta dish came out cold --cold clams, cold pasta (someone else's?) We pointed this out to the server, who did not offer him another selection. He did offer to take it off the bill, which he did, but left my husband without a dinner. In the meantime my husband was still munching on my fries, which were taken away (along with the cold pasta) by an overzealous worker with limited English skills. she should not even been hovering over us by that time, we had only been there a bit over one half hour. I am not blaming the busser -- it was clearly poor training both for the server and the busser.
We arrived on time for a 7:30 reservation and were back on the street by 8:23 --feeling like we were rushed out. No relaxing dining experience at this restaurant! To be fair, by that time we wanted out!
The manger call us when we returned to the hotel and offered to not charge us for dinner, which we accepted. We would have preferred a nice, relaxing dinner, instead.
Both my husband and I have both been food writers and newspaper restaurant critics in our time. This was the first time EVER when we felt it was fair for the restaurant to not charge us.
There are clearly problems both with the kitchen and the training of the staff. It is no excuse that the busser has little English (as the manager kept pointing out to us) -- it is a problem of training!
Finally, while the house made mozzarella was good, the moules frites were pedestrian, and as I said, the pasta in clam sauce was cold.
I wish there were vegetarian entrees
Unfortunately we did not have a good experience. We were in town for my mother’s birthday and based on our countless previous excellent experiences at Distrito, were excited to try this new restaurant. Good quality was good but problem was the execution. Our steaks were all quite undercooked. Fries were salty as to be inedible. Appetizers were ok but did not show much inventiveness or value. Management was nice enough to offer some free deserts and take a large sum off of our check but this did not make up for what it as supposed to be the special birthday dinner while we were in town.
Felt very welcome from start. Waiter was excellent - pleasant, patient, attentive without being intrusive. We had cocktails, a variety of small plates and a green salad - each of which we shared, and a dessert. It was enjoyable to have small portions of many interesting foods. Very nice.
We had a fabulous experience for Brunch. The food was rich and varied with just right portions. Service excellent. Loved the atmosphere. Comfortable and private. Looking forward to going back!
Brunch was fantastic and an incredible deal
We were a family party of 10 including teens and grandparents and were seated at a corner table off to the side which was perfect. Service was attentive and friendly. Food was excellent! Would definitely recommend.
This was possibly the best last minute decision I made on an overnight trip to Philadelphia to see the Boston Bruins play the Flyers on Easter Sunday.
Was a little concerned when we got there about the menu. With a 13 year old, 16 year old and a wife that does not eat red meat I thought we may have an issue. The menu is very limited and has some unknown ingredients for the casual diners that we are. French fries cooked in duck oil? Little scary at first. But Both kids got the steak (with the duck fries), wife got the salmon and I got the chicken.
The apps (cauliflower and meatballs) got us off to a great start. The main courses for everyone were possibly the best we have had to date. And the kids really liked the duck fries. My chicken was the best, the steak was great, and the wife was really happy with her salmon.
Great atmosphere and prices more then reasonable. A great start to our weekend. Only problem...Bruins lost on OT to the Flyers Easter Sunday!
Intimate dining and exquisite food. We enjoyed a multi-course meal here before taking in a show. Everything we ate was excellent, but the real star was the wine! I would recommend this to anyone looking for a nice evening out in Philly.
We ate dinner after catching a matinee with the kids. We had reservations (via Open Table) and they sat us in the far back at the high top table section (good that the kids are 13 & 15 and not apt to fall out of a chair). Our waiter was very attentive and I have not a bad thing to say about the service. We enjoyed the food, though the portions could have been more generous. Definitely recommend the home made mozzarella, trout almondine, pasta carbonara (home made pasta) and the steak frites.
Tasting Menu w/ Wine Pairing....MEMORABLE! Will definitely go back.
Garces Trading Company was great. My boyfriend and I decided to go early for happy hour and got the cocktail of the day and wine. We also got the meatballs (so good!) and the mozzarella (good) for cheaper than regular price. For dinner we ordered the short rib lasagna and the tuscan fusilli carbonara. My boyfriend loved both but I personally loved the short rib lasagna. Would definitely recommend!
The food was delicious. The meatball shared plate was the perfect sized appetizer for two people. Great service. The staff was attentive and very nice.
I'm always interested in how a restaurant treats a single diner. This one was a gem. I never felt neglected, the waitstaff was friendly and knowledgeable. And when there was a slight hiccup, they made sure that everything went smoothly thereafter. WIsh that I lived closer--I'd go more often!
I loved the meal and our server was great -- explained everything in detail and helped us with our choices.
The only reason the items were not all 5 star is that one of the people in our group is a Vegan. The server talked him through the options and he placed his order. Unfortunately, she had to come back and update that the cauliflower is cooked in butter. (Could they not cook it with oil? All sorts of special orders are accommodated all of the time. Guessing the chef felt it was going to produce a lesser product if they compromised and used oil.) So....go to Vedge up the street if you have Vegans with you but for us Omnivores the place was great. Good food, good drinks, very helpful server.
Garces trading co took us a little outside of our regular dining palate. We loved every bite. Our service was as fantastic as the food. We definitely hope to return.
Overall a nice experience. Food was decent. Had a space in a back room which was nice for a larger party as it kept the noise level down a bit. Only negative was the service. Waiter was a nice guy but he kept on forgetting things. Drinks were slow to come out and food order took a long time to take. Would recommend going on a Sunday for brunch as long as you are not in a hurry.
Solid neighborhood place to eat. Music is a little too loud.
Is owning one high chair your passive aggressive way of letting diners know that you don't want people with children to eat here? I had reservations which specifically said I would need a high chair. When I spoke to them on the phone I reiterated that I needed a high chair and I was told it was not a problem. When we got there, we had to wait past our reservation time because they had exactly one high chair and it had been given to another family. We ended up being seated without a high chair. Eventually, halfway through our time there, we were given a chair for the baby. Too little too late! What's the point of making a reservation ahead of time if it will not be honored? The food was good. Nothing special. This is the third Jose Garces restaurant we have been to in the city and poor service seems to be the running theme in all three. Our waitress ignored us. Service was so slow. How long does it take to make coffee? When it was time to pay the bill, we told her, "Don't go, we have our credit card ready" and she just disappeared anyway. This city is flooded with restaurants that serve delicious brunch so you should probably step up your game by offering better service. We won't be back!
I ordered vegetable minestrone (no pasta). Want to know how many beans were in there? 5. There were 5 beans. My friend ordered the salmon entree whose description included a bagel. Want to know what the bagel was? A bagel chip. CHIP.
It took 30 minutes to get coffee, 60 minutes to get an appetizer, and 90 minutes to get an entree.
The overall consensus was, “the food was fine, I guess.”
We've been to Garces Trading Co. once before for dinner. It was alright. However, went for brunch yesterday and was very impressed! Food was great. Drinks were good and for $25 I got sangria, coffee, pastries, a cheese board and a meal. That's a pretty solid price for Philly brunch! Our server, Mary C. was wonderful! Friendly but not overbearing and handled our multiple credit cards/gift cards with a smile. Definitely would recommend for brunch!
Food was terrible
Olive and cauliflower small plates were very good. We both had the trout which was excellent. Have had the pasta with the lamb ragu also excellent. Always have had a good meal here with the opportunity to try different dishes. Think you will enjoy.
The food was EXCEPTIONAL. I loved our server too. She was attentive without being overbearing. It was my first time there and my experience was flawless.
We had a great experience at Garces Trading Co. Food was excellent, drinks were good. Ambiance was loud and energetic. It was a nice date night out.
It was great food. Alcoholic drinks were way over priced.
First visit....really enjoyed everything about our dining experience. Great food & atmosphere! Very attentive service! Will definitely be back!
Brunch was spectacular! We all got the $25 prefix which was a great deal - cocktail, coffee, bread basket, choice of a first and second plate. I had the duck pot and baked eggs; both delicious. The waitstaff and chef were also very accommodating when I requested some minor modifications to my dishes because I’m lactose intolerant.
I heard amazing things about this place but was very disappointed with the food. The flavors were just very muted and disappointing. We ordered multiple plates and were disappointed with most of them. The short rib lasagna was the only dish worth talking about, it was delightful! However, if you are a vegetarian, don't even bother going here; there is sadly, nothing for you.
I'm a very big fan of Garces, but less so regarding the Trading Company. Not a very extensive menu, just small plates yet still big prices. Had a very good experience, enjoyed the food and wine, service was good, it just felt like it took too big a bite out of my wallet for the overall experience.
Love the steak and duck fat fries.
Stopped in the night that Riley hit the City and SEPTA trains not running. Carmen took good care of me; her service was wonderful. Food was very good. In all a lovely way to ride out the storm.
