Great food and setting.
Excellent service starting with a wonderful greeting from valet. The table location was wonderful - utmost attention given to ensure the music was not too loud as my mother is hard of hearing. The wine suggestion was very tasty and food service top notch. I was impressed - I have to go to many restaurants for work purposes and I can truly say it was a pleasure eating at The Gandy Dancer on an away-from-work evening out.
Went here for our first anniversary and it truly felt like they were there to help celebrate. We had awesome food, good service, and the atmosphere is great. Would recommend to anybody!
Great food and exceptional service as always, and the Amtrak train went by twice during our meal, which was great entertainment for everyone.
Excellent customer service. Great place to have a special event such as a birthday celebration.
I cannot tell you the level of disappointment we felt after our dinner. I had the prime rib and asked for it medium. When my dinner arrived it was almost grey. Everything was barely warm and even the au juice was cold. It just happened that the Management staff came by asking how everything was because I was not going to say anything. I was honest and told her everything was almost cold. She asked how I ask for it to be prepared, I told her medium, and she said it was not medium and she would get me another piece. She did come back with a much nicer looking presentation (she had them cut the piece from the other end she said). Having eaten half of the other meal, it was hard to enjoy this one. I ate about half and took the rest home.
I must share though, the flavor of the meat, au juice were only fair and not really good which I thought I was going to get when we came there.
The building is lovely, the music selection and volume level were good.
Waiter was cordial, but we were the first people on the lower level that day and I think perhaps he let the dinner sit too long under the lights. That only affected appearance though and not flavor.
Shrimp Scampi was about a seven on a scale of 1 - 10. Even it looked like it had been prepared, set under a warming light for a while before served.
Oh well, don't know unless you try.
Entertained a large group and all enjoyed the evening! Food and service were exceptional as was the atmosphere!
Was excited to go but was a bit disappointed in the food. We have eaten at many nicer restaurants and if your looking at Flemings, Tera MiSu in Northville, Seafood Company, or even Mitchells the meal itself was not great. Shrimp in pesto was way over cooked. The peas and carrots in couscous was frozen not fresh. 1 very tiny piece of kale in the "kale salad" with the tuscan sword fish which was very under seasoned. No vegetable with prime rib. Two aspargus with the sirloin which surely 3 or 4 would be a more pleasing plate. The salmon was not even in the ballpark of great. Although my daughter loved the scallops. The drink flight menu should come with the drink menu at the beginning not as an after thought in the dessert menu. That was very disappointing as we would have ordered as well. An finally when you advertise a blood orange drink you should probably use a blood orange not only to make but to garnish as well. I might come back as a second chance but not as an event. Given this was a $400 meal I expected better. To be clear though the service was very good...
We were pleasantly surprised by the personalized menu welcoming us for our anniversary. The staff were attentive without being pushy. The food was excellent and we left feeling that we had celebrated our anniversary in style!
Ordered the wagyu beef ribeye and was totally disappointed. I could have gotten the same quality of steak at a chain dinner.
Great food and great service
Wonderful food & services
Love it! Must go! The food was awesome I went for brunch with a group of friends.
Everything was fantastic, brought our daughter and son in law, their first visit, absolutely loved it.
Definitely recommend Gandy Dancer.
Great food and service with an excellent atmosphere.
Our, Waitperson, Rodney, was one of the most professional, courteous Waiters I have ever encountered.
Service - impeccable!
Not as good as I remember it was. Food was just ok.
Lunch this week was better than our previous very unpleasant dinners at the Gandy Dancer. The wait sstaff is consistently rude and haughty. We have written the manager with our concerns in the past and have gotten no response. It is a lovely building, I just wish the service and management were much improved.
What a find! I've eaten at Gandy Dancer before but it's been at least 10 years. I decided to take my husband for his birthday. It was a pleasant ride from our Farmington Hills home and so worth the drive. Our wait person was very informative about the menu items and very helpful. My husband had the shrimp scampi and from the look and the way he devoured it, it must have been good. I had the walleye and it was fantastic. We eat out a lot and we will definitely be adding this place to our roster of choices.
Very nice place and great food.
Waitress was great too!
We alighted from the train and walked into the restaurant for a delightful dinner.
This was another traditional celebration for a birthday and wedding anniversary. We keep coming back with expectations of an elegant setting, soft jazz in the background, a delectable buffet presentation, and, of course, ringside seat view of the passing train. Well, the expectations were exceeded; the deserts put brunch over the top. We plan to return for some more traditions.
I live this place for Sunday brunch. Very nice selection of foods. The old train station is beautiful
This is a must try restaurants. The waiter was one of the best and most knowledgeable about the menu and drink menu I've seen in a long time. All of the food was excellent. Staff was very attentive and friendly. BEYOND EXCELLENT!!
Great time! Thank you. Would recommend to my friends and family.
I was there for my friends birthday dinner this past Saturday and our waiter was terrible. He was non existent, took forever to get our drink order. Never came and checked on us during the dinner portion. My friends drink went empty and we had to ask another server to get another drink. And he was not very personable at all. I work in the service industry and I get that we all have bad days but the service he provided us was terrible and he didnt appear to be busy.
Great service, atmosphere and good.
We came here to celebrate a special occasion. We were one of a handful of tables seated when the restaurant opened. The ambiance is excellent, as always, though we didn’t see a train pass by this time.
Our server was pleasant but you could tell he was checked out and kind of faking it. It took over 30 minutes for our oysters to come out, and then almost 40 minutes for our entrees. Our server checked in on us maybe once or twice during that whole time so water glasses sat empty for a long time. I’m not sure if the delay was from the server or the kitchen, but it shouldn’t have taken 2 hours since we ordered promptly and were one of the first in the restaurant for the day.
The food was very good, though small details seemed flawed. I ordered the scallops, which came with a pea purée on the bottom. The plate had been sitting on the window for so long part of the pea purée had been cooked to the plate, leaving a hard crusty ring of nasty. That was very unappetizing, but i was so hungry after having to wait so long that i did not send it back. The desserts we ordered were spectacular, as usual. Overall the food is very good and I think comes at a reasonable price for the quality, minus the few flaws.
We will continue to celebrate special occasions here but do hope to see a little more communication and attention to detail at our next visit.
I was there celebrating my 70th birthday. It was a wonderful experience for myself and my family .Thanks for making it extra special with the birthday creme brulee and the personalized menu!!!!
The Gandy Dancer used to be special, the place you'd take out-of-town visitors. It's still OK, and the ambience is as nice as ever. But it's overpriced and the food is just okay, which is disappointing given the once-stellar reputation of the place. The service is also okay.
Would I recommend? I answered "no," because I would tell someone who asked that there are places with much more special food (Pacific Rim comes to mind). However, if the person was mainly interested in historic atmosphere and didn't have the most discriminating palate and wasn't concerned much about value-for-money, I could recommend the Gandy Dancer.
I hope the restaurant will take steps (new chef? better training?) to make this place special again.
We ate at the Gandy dancer 42 years ago for our second wedding anniversary when we lived in Ann Arbor. We now live out of state and wanted to see if the restaurant could still live up to our positive memories of it. It did in all respects. Our waiter, Chad, was wonderful and the food was superb. Two thumbs up on the blueberry bread pudding. It is so worth the calories!
Had a great time! The cuisine, ambiance and service were superb! Even got to enjoy the ringing of the bell when 2 trains went by.
Celebrating a birthday, the Gandy Dancer did not offer anything for the occasion except a rolled up paper copy of their menu with a pink bow...really?? Other Ann Arbor restaurants will discount your meal for the occasion or offer a small dessert. In lieu of their high prices, they could have done better than that. Staff were pleasant and service was ok. Oh, they did light a candle on the cake that we ordered (and paid for) from their menu. Would not recommend if you're celebrating a special occasion.
Always great food for a girls night out!
It was our 53 wedding anniversary, and our daughter ordered by phone a dessert for us, and we never got it. Our water glasses were not refilled. I asked if the coconut shrimp came with a sauce, and our waiter said it did not and it did, and I preferred it without.
Going to Gandy Dancy was an awesome experience!! My friend and I took our 9 year old grandsons to lunch and then to a movie to see Lion King !!
The food was delicious from the warm bread, appetizers , down to our entrees!
We will definitely be back with a few more people to share the experience !!
We received wonderful service from Renee. We had two little ones with us as guests. They were well accommodated and so were we! We enjoyed the fast menu selections. Thank you for being unique. The Hartwigs
Great time at the Gandy Dancer. Hadn't been in a few years, but it's still a "go to" spot. Several different seating areas. Comfortable for casual dinner or celebratory meal out. Attentive service and great food. Was not disappointed--the train did come by! Finished the night with a "hummer." You can't get that yummy ice cream drink everywhere!
Having attended the University of Michigan, we have had the pleasure of dining at the Gandy Dancer many times throughout the years. This last visit was very disappointing. I ordered the wild salmon. It was so over done that it was inedible. The accompanying pyramid of rice was flavorless and everyone’s broccoli was so undercooked that it may as well have raw. My diner mates also complained about the quality of their main courses. I was offered a substitute entree but I had lost my appetite by then. Must say that the hors d’ oeuvres were very good as was our waiter.
It was a fantastic experience! My family and I were celebrating my Son’s birthday and the ambience was perfect. Jessica along with the other wait staff were phenomenal.
The food was excellent!
