Wife and I went here for her birthday for the first time and was not disappointed. The huge crab legs were incredible and steaks were cooked perfectly.
Delicious meals and good variety of prepared dishes. Quality seafood, and nice for special occasions. Only downside is there are no vegetarian options for meals.
My wife and I celebrated 42 years with a lunchtime date. It was enjoyable. My wife LOVES their crab cakes and we we be back again soon.
We had a great time and the food was wonderful. Waiter forgot to bring glasses of wine a couple of us ordered. He gave us yummy creme brulee to compensate us. Christmas decorations were so beautiful! I'd go back in a heartbeat!
My friends and I went yesterday for a Christmas lunch get together. The food was excellent. We had the two course lunch meal that you could chose a each course from a choice of three. I couldn't believe the size of the portions. It was excellent. Our server, Sarah, was great too. Very attentive. We were very happy with everything. Plus they had a nice Christmas ambiance.
We celebrated a retirement. The attention to detail and service provided was excellent. The food was delicious.
Trying to not be sad but service is really slipping. Food is good, appetizers are all excellent and quality of fish dish options are always strong but this visit and last two the service is really slipping and tonight was really sad. Extremely long periods with no attention, dry water glasses, no drinks for more than 20 minutes after ordering, totally forgot one of our groups dinners and she did not get food until after everyone else was finished, same with wine orders. Never came back after early initial drink orders to ask if anyone wanted anything else. Took a long time to get dinner to the point where some of our party had to leave before they could finish. The real challenge was that the place was not really busy. We were all perplexed and frustrated. Was a once a year holiday gathering for us and could not understand what the issues were but it was really disappointing.
very nice experience. The restaurant was not busy making the noise levels negligible.
We are never disappointed in our Gandy Dancer experience-service, food and ambiance make celebrating a special occasion more special.
We had the "best" server anyone could have. Very attentive, great personality. Made our annual "girls" get together a super one.
The service was exquisite, the food was delicious, the live music was pleasing, and looking at the structure, I could sense the thousands of train passengers of days gone by
I rate this restaurant a 2 star only because the service was good and surroundings comfortable. I can't say anything good for the food. The menu labels the snapper, golf snapper. So I assume from the gulf. The waitress informed me all their fish is farm raised which is not listed on the menu. I did order fish which was greasy and tasteless served with one cup of rice and two spears of asparagus. Pretty sad. Will not be going there again!
Food and service were good. Prefer round table for karge group but they were unable to seat 10 at a round table; disappointing.
Haven't been there for awhile. Forgot how good this place is. Good food, good service, good value.
Fabulous experience! Great ambiance and food!! Our waiter was attentive and very knowledgeable of the food.
One of the best restaurants. Great food (especially seafood), fresh hot bread, Martha's Vineyard salad. Top level service. Fun to watch trains go by. Good spot for a special night out.
Very good but pricey . Love the history and ambience.
Love this place! Outstanding food with impeccable service in a beautiful old railroad station.
Good service and good food
Impeccable service, knowledgeable staff with excellent table side manner. The service itself was a show to be enjoyed, but genuine. The food was excellent from drinks and starter all the way through to dessert and after meal cocktails. I will come back for more large occasions!
Ordered the white fish which was very bland, served with awful rice. The waiter insisted on pouring my prosecco — and spilled half of what was remaining! In exchange, he brought us an extra basket of bread (which was excellent!), but who needed the extra carbs?
Coincidentally, we had dinner at Kruse and Muer in Royal Oak three nights later. The white fish looked and tasted 100 percent better! The waitress also wanted to pour my remaining Prosecco, but this time, I learned my lesson and didn’t let her. She did, however, let me substitute delicious broccoli for awful rice. Bread wasn’t nearly as good!
All I can say is the waffles are the best, to me, in the area. That bananas foster syrup is simply delicious. I wish I wasn’t allergic to seafood though, that cut down 20 % of my options. If you want an omelet you must order as soon as you sit down. Those seem to take a while. Our server, who’s name completely escapes me now was very attentive.
I don't like to write negative reviews but I feel compelled to share our experience. The Gandy Dancer has been around for a long time and used to be a place where you could depend on getting high quality food and excellent service. We were very disappointed to see how their standards for food quality have gone downhill. My husband and I went to the Sunday brunch buffet yesterday with another couple. I was the one that recommended we go there because we'd been to the Gandy Dancer years ago a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It's still a Muer restaurant and so we were confident that they would serve a high quality meal. We were very disappointed. The buffet cost $25 a person and I was sure at that cost, the food would be good. The salad greens were warm and limp. The shrimp was warm and limp. The pasta offerings were bland. Instead of a nice potato dish, they served TATER TOTS. Yes, you read that right, TATER TOTS. Even the desserts were sweet but very tasteless, nothing special at all. The one thing my husband enjoyed was the cheese blintzes. So our meal was extremely disappointing. The service was great, our waiter was courteous, attentive and filled up our water glasses regularly. The ambiance was great (the train went by, we all waved and it was cheerful). But we won't be going back and wasting our money again. I guess the people in charge are not following Chuck Muer's values anymore. That's sad. But I cannot recommend this restaurant.
Always a great place
Fine food and service. No complaints. Place is large, but it has multiple rooms so the feeling is still intimate. Great seafood, but I had the duck -- and that was great, too. We also enjoy the bar and happy hours at this place.
The sea bass entree, a special for the evening we were there, was wonderful. The "risotto" however was gummy. Our server, although very pleasant, was slow in returning with drinks and didn't get back to us at the end of the meal on a timely basis. We did order coffee, but there again was a delay in getting it served. We had reservations to The Messiah at 8 o'clock, so I only had the slightest sip of my coffee before we had to leave.
We go to the Gandy every year for our anniversary. Food and service are first rate, timing is impeccable, the valet was extremely friendly, and they even personalized our menus to note our anniversary. This legacy restaurant never ceases to exceed expectations.
Every time we dine at the this restaurant we always love the food and really enjoy the holiday decorations.
The waiter was attentive and helpful, most appreciated, though rather affected. The soups were loaded with butter far past a point of diminishing returns: my butternut squash bisque literally had tablespoonfulls of grease floating on top. But I was just plain shocked when my entrée arrived: the whitefish filet had been overcooked into a piece of fishy rubber, with no seasoning beyond the charred flavor of small grilling burn marks. No amount of salt, pepper or lemon could remedy the lack of flavor. Metzger’s offers a whitefish filet at 3/4 the price but half again as large, which is always cooked to perfection: not undercooked, not overcooked, with a delicate melt-in-your-mouth softness that never ceases to amaze me — plus it’s perfectly, subtlely seasoned with light dashes of paprika, with an excellent house-made tartar sauce on the side. Their culinary perfection on this dish — absolutely consistent over the years— absolutely puts Gandy Dancer to shame. The rice was flavorless, its carrot and red pepper bits appearing to have been frozen, not fresh. I tried remedying the leftovers at home the next day, adding fresh grated ginger, fresh fround black pepper and sea salt, and it still was lacking. The broccolini and asparagus were just overcooked enough to have lost their flavor, the coating of unsalted butter only adding grease, not taste. Granted, my daughter ordered the crab legs, the single most expensive entrée... but getting a bill for over $100 for a meal for two — without any wine or dessert for either of us — when everything but the crab was painfully substandard, was the most bewildering disappointment I’ve ever experienced in a restaurant. No one could pay me enough to enter Gandy Dancer ever again!
Celebrating becoming a Doctor at U of M! Could not have been more attentive to our needs! Truly a cut above all others!!!
Great food and service. Would definately recommend for all occasions
Way too noisy sitting by the windows. Please don’t seat a large party of 8 on top of two of us sitting by the windo.
Outstanding Brunch! Great ambience. Excellent service.
It’s a nice place to grab brunch.
The crab legs were hard to get open although they been split. Some of them were very spiney. I'd order something else
Menu has lots of interesting choices, service is impeccable. We plan a return visit soon.
We had a lovely Thanksgiving meal here. The service was quick and the food was delicious. Quite possibly the best pecan pie I've ever had!
Food, service and ambiance , as always, was outstanding. Faith, our server, was splendid.
Thanksgiving. Excellent meal and service
Went for Thanksgiving. Very busy, but wait staff was great and very attentive. Food was as expected -- very well prepared and presented. Will definitely go again, especially for a "special" occasion.
