Great food, great service, and great friends - a great combination
was a UofM game day and busy. Could have used more support staff otherwise perfect
Birthday celebration- waiter wasn’t great at making sure people had drinks throughout the evening.... water, wine, beer or coffee after....
We have been to the Dancer several times over the years and traditionally have been pleased overall.
However our last visit was disappointing, especially as we hosted out of town family.
Four of our dinner guests had significant food complaints:
A whitefish came out no more than room temperature
A snapper dish had several bits of shell
A chicken dish was also barely warm and was more cheese than chicken
A steak ordered medium rare was served well done
Meal took FORVER. And at the end of the meal we are offered free dessert. Seriously? After almost 2 hours why would we want to stay an extra minute longer. Thanks but no thanks. Not what you expect from what’s supposed to be a fine establishment in Ann Arbor. Not blaming the waiter - the manager needs additional training on customer service...Won’t be returning.
good service, steak was significantly overcooked and nothing tasted like it was seasoned at all.
This is a beautiful restaurant located in the old authentic Michigan Central Railroad station in Ann Arbor.
Just being in this building is amazing.
When the trains come through everyone starts clapping, they know the significance of this beautiful place.
We always ask for a track-side table (indoors).
Seafood is their specialty but everything is excellent.
Great place for special occasions.
Use the free valet parking and make your life easier.
We have been here a dozen times and it is always excellent.
The Gandy Dancer has been around for a long time. Unfortunately, the quality of the meals served have been in a steady decline for a long time as well. It is a shame that such a charming setting (a 19th Century train station) doesn't come with good food. Would it really be all that difficult to find a chef who can grill a Halibut steak without ending up with a desert dry thing on a plate?
Had "Giant Shrimp Scampi." Wasn't giant at all. Most fish bait is larger. Also Scampi is the Italian term for shrimp so had shrimp shrimp. Does that make it giant? Waitress explained that meant Italian Style. Then why not call it that. Still, overpriced as was most everything on the menu.
We have dined at Gandy Dancer several times and have always been relatively pleased. Last night’s dinner was a home run! The food was excellent and the service (thank you, Josh) was exemplary. We debated about an appetizer and finally settled on the avocado/crab stack. It was wonderful! But the entrees were the best ever. My scallops were delicious, moist and plentiful on top of couscous. And my husband’s salmon was just as good. I was very impressed with the food and I am not easily impressed. The only weak part was my salad, which was just ok. We sat in the alcove and thus were away from the hustle and bustle of the restaurant. Gandy Dancer is a great little restaruant and I highly recommend it, particularly the crab/avocado timbale.
Our waiter Bill did an awesome job offering us suggestions of what to order from the menu. All four of us couldn’t decide there were so many interesting options to choose from. Each one of us very much enjoyed what we ordered from appetizer to main dish! We had the Best service and the best food EVER and can’t wait to come back next year when attending another U of M football game.
Thank you for ending our evening with an awesome dining experience!
Six of us had a very nice dinner at Gandy Dancer. We were given a round table in an area as quiet as they had available and were able to converse easily. The food was very good, though one on us had prime rib which he found not as good as he expected. The fish that four of us had was excellent. The waiter was attentive, the atmosphere festive. All in all, a lovely evening.
We usually have an excellent experience overall at Gandy Dancer, however this time our reservation was at 6:00PM and when we arrived they had us down for 7:00PM. We were seated quickly, but at a table that was too small for our group of 5, very noisy and in a high traffic area. Disappointing when we were celebrating my husband's birthday. We will dine here again and hope for a much better table and less hassled waiter next time.
The staff gave wonderful service. The food and drinks are always the highest quality. Thanks for the special treatment on our anniversary!
Halibut was dry, smoked gouda stuffed chicken was unremarkable.
Wedge, rolls, and quiet booth atmosphere made the experience tolerable.
Our server Laura was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The atmosphere was very relaxing and not rushed. We enjoyed ourselves and will be back.
The fresh whitefish is what draws us back.
Our server Hannah was spirited and efficient.
Great anniversary celebration. Scott was excellent and took great care of us. We will making the Gandy Dancer our anniversary tradition...
Food was very good, and the service was great. It was quiet enough to have a good conversation.
The old train station is a fun place to visit.
I noted in my opentable reservation that we were celebrating my father's 85th birthday. From the moment we walked in, everyone acknowledged his birthday and went out of there way to make him feel special. This included the hostess and all of the servers. They even printed a menu that said Happy 85th Birthday. Without requesting it, they brought a special dessert to our table complete with a candle. As a final touch, the server asked if we Valet parked, which we did. He took our ticket and had the car brought up for us so we didn't have to wait.
I would recommend new carpet as it looks old and worn and need tables - currently a little dated. Food was just as good as the service. It was a wonderful evening. Thank you staff for making my father's birthday special.
You were out of lobster tails on a holiday weekend. The Moscow mule cocktail was terrible - tasted like only lime juice. Ended up getting lobster bisque which was warm, not hot. Very slow bar service to our table. Had coffee and server forgot cream. Love your place, but not a great night for an anniversary . . .
Requested a table near window for the past 3 times still keep getting put in corner.
We had a delicious seafood dinner. The oysters were excellent. Celebrating an upcoming wedding. What a treat
We went to celebrate our seventh anniversary. Food was excellent and they even printed custom menus wishing us a happy anniversary.
Food is outstanding. Perfect birthday dinner with family.
Four friends enjoyed a pleasant lunch with prompt service and good food. We especially appreciated not being rushed during our lunch so we could visit with each other.
1- did not have whitefish- um its a FISH restaurant, figure that out
2- bad table licatiin with loud noise from adjacent room
3- bad table location bext to station a d narrow oath for of several waiters with lots of walking by our table us and lots of clinking glasses- very disruptive and should not even have a table located there.at all.
Our favorite restaurant for anniversaries -- the first was our second anniversary and this last one was our 47th.
Good food with excellent presentation and friendly, courteous staff.
Because we had indicated that this was an anniversary dinner, our menus were custom printed with a congratulatory message -- nice touch!
I love Gandy Dancer. Great menu, excellent service and the ambiance is amazing.
The ambiance was pleasant, the drinks were amazing, and the food was unique. However, I do need to mention that while flavorful, my filet was slightly over done . The potatoes were amazing, as was the asparagus and the gouda stuffed chicken. Easy parking across the street, as least in the evening hours. Train did go by twice during dinner, I was bit surprised by the clapping. Must be a tradition?
A very enjoyable experience complete with excellent service and a wonderful menu. The atmosphere
was perfect for a group of friends to have a relaxed lunch and a chance to renew an old friendship.
I had a business dinner on August 26 with people from out of town. I called the restaurant and I told them it was a business dinner and asked if they could accommodate us with a quieter table, I was told that they could, we were seated in one of the noisiest areas of the restaurant.
I ordered ahi tuna rare, the waiter complimented me on having it rare, however it was served medium or more. Certainly I could of sent it back, but being that this wasn't a casual dinner, I wanted to keep the focus on the conversation, not the over cooked meal.
Two people wanted to split a key lime pie, they told the waiter they were going to be splitting it and after the pie was served, the waiter brought out an extra plate and a knife for the person to cut the pie in half.
I had higher expectations for the Gandy Dancer.
Area where we were seated was so cold and there was cold air coming directly on us
The beef was tough. I like the coffee. I would like to know what brand you use for your coffee.
My husband and I were celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary. I can't think of a more romantic place to have dinner. We got to see 2 trains - love that. Your lobster bisque alone is reason to eat at GD.
Excellent service, food and comfortable atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Through the years we have been there many times. Have never been disappointed in the food. Service was always very good but this visit was beyond a 10 for service. In other words, it was outstanding.
Highly recommend the Gandy Dancer for any occasion. Rates right up there with other 5 star establishments we have eaten at around the world.
Phenomenal dinner. My wife and I went for our 1st anniversary and couldn’t have been happier with our dining experience. Staff wished us a happy anniversary upon arrival and the menus were even customized with our names. Food was delicious and the wait staff was very friendly and professional. It is a bit pricey for everyday dining but perfect for special occasions. We could see this becoming a place for us to celebrate annually.
Very nice experience! Thoroughly enjoyed the lobster, and the Chocolate Mousse desert was outstanding!
