Gaijin by Chef Paul Virant is Chicago’s first okonomiyaki restaurant, offering both Hiroshima and Osaka styles of the savory Japanese pancake. A self-described gaijin, or “outsider” in Japanese, Virant playfully embraces this perspective and honors traditional preparations and techniques, as well as his well-known passion for pickling and preserving.

Designed to deliver a lively and interactive culinary experience, the 60-seat space is anchored by a custom 12-foot griddle and chef’s counter and offers individual Hiroshima teppan griddles for table service.

The dessert menu features kakigori, a shaved ice dessert, along with mochi donuts and other Japanese-inspired treats. The bar program showcases highballs and a focused selection of beer – including a Moody Tongue-Gaijin collaboration house lager, sake, Japanese whisky, and wine.

Tried Okonomiyaki for the first time and Gaijin’s passport experience was the perfect way. Mochi donut was a perfect end to finish a meal.

I did the tasting experience and sat at the chefs counter - also added in the drink pairing. Highly recommend all of the above! It was a great experience and cool to sit and watch all of the action happening in the kitchen.

On this, my third visit, I brought my 22 year-old granddaughter, who is a very knowledgeable consumer of Asian food. Again, we had two visits to our table from the owner/chef, who is delightful. We enjoyed the smaller prix fixe menu, especially the short ribs. We eat outside and rather enjoyed being interrupted by the L trains overhead from time to time. As always, the shaved eyes desserts were outstanding.

Needed to add another person to our reservation and they were very helpful to creatively accommodate. A lot of options for pairings or a la carte. Everyone able to get what interested them. Service was very good. Thoroughly enjoyed dining here.

We were there especially for the Chef Collab with our fave, Proxi's Andrew Zimmerman. Although we live around the corner, this was our first visit. It was delightful! Chef Paul came out and warmly greeted us - as he cycled around the intimate and bustling space. We truly enjoyed sitting at the Chef's counter, watching all the kitchen action. The food was delicious, flavorful and unique. We've already made another reservation - and look forward to returning!
