About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
For more than a century, Gage & Tollner was the cornerstone of the Brooklyn restaurant world. Generations of Brooklynites found comfort and community in Gage & Tollner’s magnificent landmarked dining room; generations from now, we want our children and grandchildren to find comfort here, too.

With three longtime friends and celebrated local restaurateurs at the helm -- partners Sohui Kim (chef, Insa / The Good Fork), Ben Schneider (Insa / The Good Fork), and St. John Frizell (Fort Defiance) -- our community-driven team has worked to restore Gage & Tollner to its former glory and guide it into the 21st century. Consistently on The New York Times Best Restaurants List since reopening (2021-2024), our delicious chophouse menu takes inspiration from the Gage & Tollner archives, honoring and elevating beloved longtime classics with meticulously-sourced ingredients and diligent technique.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Sydne Emi Gooden

From the OpenTable editors: A Brooklyn institution from 1879 until 2004, Gage & Tollner was reopened by restaurant vets Sohui Kim, Ben Schneider, and St. John Frizell in 2019 to great acclaim—including a spot on The New York Times's top 100 restaurants list. With classic dishes like oysters Rockefeller and chicken liver paté, as well as a selection of grass-fed, dry-aged steaks, the menu pays homage to the restaurant’s long history. Served in an award-winning dining room anchored by arched mirrors and a spacious dark-wood bar, Gage & Tollner nods to the past while feeling entirely modern (note the teeny 'tinis offered at happy hour).

The food was good but not great considering the price. For the money, there are better steakhouses in NYC. I appreciated the restored bygone-days interior but you can't eat the decor. I started with a classic gin martini. It was standard. The clams kimsino appetizer was fine but steep at $23. The Parker house rolls, 4 small soft rolls for $12 where a rip off. The Porterhouse steak for 3 was more like for 2 people and it came with an anemic filet mignon side more akin to a T-bone steak. At $230 it was a bit pricey for what you got. My carnivore friend and I glanced at each other when it arrived on the table. I liked the thick creamed spinach with a few tiny bits of celery and a hint of nutmeg. It was a nice twist on this steakhouse staple. The buttered hash brown potatoes were "a-ight" but forgettable. My friend and I have eaten at steakhouses around the world. We felt our experience at Gage and Tollner was "Meh." Go to Peter Luger or Wolfgang's for Porterhouse. Keens has a better Porterhouse and they are known primarily for their Prime Rib and Mutton.

The food was excellent. The service was excellent. The only problem is your bathroom. I am a woman and did not like the fact that men are allowed in the bathroom. Also the bathroom needs to be updated. It is awful!!

The wait staff were exceptional, very attentive, helpful, and friendly. Food was excellent. The wine list was good. Noise level got louder as the evening got later, but it didn’t diminish the evening for us. I highly recommend them.

What a wonderful meal! We went for a small celebration and had a great time. The food was really excellent (raw clams, a perfect steak, hush puppies and other sides). The cocktails were fabulous, and the service was professional and friendly.
