About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
For more than a century, Gage & Tollner was the cornerstone of the Brooklyn restaurant world. Generations of Brooklynites found comfort and community in Gage & Tollner’s magnificent landmarked dining room; generations from now, we want our children and grandchildren to find comfort here, too.

With three longtime friends and celebrated local restaurateurs at the helm -- partners Sohui Kim (chef, Insa / The Good Fork), Ben Schneider (Insa / The Good Fork), and St. John Frizell (Fort Defiance) -- our community-driven team has worked to restore Gage & Tollner to its former glory and guide it into the 21st century. Consistently on The New York Times Best Restaurants List since reopening (2021-2024), our delicious chophouse menu takes inspiration from the Gage & Tollner archives, honoring and elevating beloved longtime classics with meticulously-sourced ingredients and diligent technique.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Sydne Emi Gooden

From the OpenTable editors: A Brooklyn institution from 1879 until 2004, Gage & Tollner was reopened by restaurant vets Sohui Kim, Ben Schneider, and St. John Frizell in 2019 to great acclaim—including a spot on The New York Times's top 100 restaurants list. With classic dishes like oysters Rockefeller and chicken liver paté, as well as a selection of grass-fed, dry-aged steaks, the menu pays homage to the restaurant’s long history. Served in an award-winning dining room anchored by arched mirrors and a spacious dark-wood bar, Gage & Tollner nods to the past while feeling entirely modern (note the teeny 'tinis offered at happy hour).

We went to celebrate with my family. The service was very good, polite and attentive. The space is incredible. I'd say the food was the most underwhelming part of the experience, but they had some hits with us. Loved the Parker House rolls. The butter hashbrowns side was insanely good, the rest of the sides (wedge salad, creamed spinach, hushpuppies, mushrooms, fries), were decent but not outstanding. The Baked Alaska was part chocolate chip mint ice cream and was overwhelmingly minty, like a breath mint, but the other components where stellar-especially the meringue. Food 7/10. Space 10/10 Service 9/10 (our waiter had a bit of BO, but very good and thoughtful)

Very cool to be in such a beautiful historic spot. Beautifully done interior to honor that. Great service from Brandon and others. Great booth. Quiet when we arrived 5:40 very pleasant then got too loud for us when we left at 7:25pm. Food: Not great salad options in my opinion, not enough varied options for a big vegetable eater. AMAZING bread. Husband loved the oysters. Fabulous market fish with excellent side greens. Delicious side of mushrooms. Cauliflower main — good… the citrusy spicy mash with is is overwhelming in my opinion too sour and too spicy. But the cauliflower itself was good. 🙏 overall quite excellent.

This is my husband's favorite restaurant, he appreciates the professional staff, how courteous they are without being overbearing. We come here for the ribeye and the best chips! The dining room is well appointed and charming. It seems obvious to us that someone cares a great deal that the customers have a good experience. Till the next visit ...thank you!

I love this restaurant! I have been a fan for decades; pre - and post Edna Lewis. Reopening this iconic restaurant was a wonderful idea! We had brunch on Father's Day. We had 2 Gin Fizzes, She Crab Soup, Oysters Rockefeller and Baked Clams, hush puppies, hen-in-the woods mushrooms, Deep Fried Onion Rings, Hot Ham and Melted Cheese Sandwich, Two eggs with biscuits and gravy and a Baked Alaska. It was all delicious! Our server Mac was professional. We ordered a Fried Chicken dinner to go. The restaurant is beautifully restored as well. This is my fourth visit since they reopened, and I have enjoyed it every time.

Gage & Tollner is a fairly historic (opened in 1879) steak and oyster house. Unfortunately it shows its age. Parts of it looks dingy and could stand to be replaced (I realize that many of the furnishings are antiques but there comes a point when they should be replaced). Service was decent but inappropriate at times (who fist bumps an 80yo at a fine dining establishment?). The food was good but would have expected better quality at this price point. Great to have finally checked it out but likely will not return.

Classic menu well prepared but oysters and martinis are mainstays. Other menu items overpriced and less interesting. Still it’s a bklyn landmark but not worthy if the nyt topi 109.

The service was impeccable, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was amazing. This restaurant clearly pays attention to detail—the lighting shifted at just the right moments, and the playlist of nostalgic hits perfectly set the mood, making our experience at Gage & Tollner truly unforgettable. This is officially our go-to spot whenever my fiancé and I go out in town.
